  • Hives!

All of a sudden this afternoon the back of my neck, right along the lower hairline, broke out with hives! It's the strangest thing, I don't think I've ever had hives before. Anyway, I was trying to think if I was having an allergic reaction to something or if I had eaten anything new. Earlier today I had a cup of coffee with some Torani sugar free hazelnut syrup in it. I've read that some people are allergic to Splenda, but I've had it many times in granular form and I've always been fine.

Is it possible that I'm allergic to the Torani? Or could the hives be cause by being on Atkins? (I'm on day 8 )

Right now I've put an ice pack on them and then I applied some hydrocortisone cream. The hives aren't anywhere else on my body other than the back of my neck.

    Any other suggestions?

    Re: Hives!

It could be the toxins leaving your body? It could be a food intolerance. My advice (and I'm not a medical professional) would be to watch it ... and if the Torani was the ONLY new thing, don't have it again ... at least for a while.

If it gets worse, see your doctor.

What she said! I haven't heard of that happening to anyone before from Atkins. The last time I saw hives on the back of the neck involved my kids, a bus, and a bad case of head lice. The last time I got them, it was detergent. The last time my sister got it, she'd been outside and we never did find out what caused it. I got them all over one time and we think it was chronic over use of over the counter painkillers for my knees. Since I lost weight, the knees are fine though. My skin tends toward dry so its better on Atkins usually. Bynadryl is over the counter and it may help the itching. I took it everynight for a long time for my case.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

      1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
      2nd mini goal: 140!
      3rd mini goal:135!
      4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

        Re: Hives!

Hives are peculiar... they can come suddenly for reasons we never discover. It happened just a few weeks ago to my 21 year old son. He suddenly broke out all over and was itching like crazy. The attack subsided as suddenly as it happened and we still can't pin it down to anything. He'd never had it before and I hope never has it again.

Sorry, not to be helpful, other than to perhaps put your mind at rest that these things can and do happen. My boy does not eat Atkins style, so that wasn't to blame.

Hope you feel better very soon.

YES! it is entirely possible you are allergic to the Torani! I have never had food allergies but once about 8 years ago I had a General Mills Hazelnut coffee and broke out in hives so badly they took a week to go away. The doctor told me my reaction was so severe I should never drink a flavored coffee again. (That was the only thing I had that day that was new to my diet). I can eat hazelnuts but the flavorings in the coffee had to be what triggered it. Be careful because the reactions can get more severe with repeated exposure.

Wow, the same thing happened to my 18 yr old son just a few weeks ago, only it happened 2 days in a row. Out of nowhere, had never happened before and hasn't happened since. Honestly, I don't know if it is possible by I think it was stress related.

I know I have heard allergic reactions can come about at anytime. But as was stated, you might never know what it was.

            Take care.

              Re: Hives!

Thanks for the replies everyone. The hives are backing down and no longer burn or itch. I've never had an allergy to anything, to I'm finding this whole situation quite perplexing.

I'm planning on letting the hives clear up and then trying the Torani again to see if that really was what caused it. (I really hope it wasn't the cause, because it tasted SOOOO good.)

I had also read, like some of you mentioned, that the hives can come from stress. I guess there's only one way to find out.

Allergies are such strange phenomena. It could be any number of things as allergies can suddenly appear from out of nowhere. Could be a new reaction to a hair product even. My daughter suddenly found herself allergic to something or other on her hands. Turns out it was Bath and Body Works... she stopped using it and the rash went away. We wonder if they changed their formula? Anyhow such reactions can turn up suddenly. Try eliminating all you can and reintroducing the items one by one to see if the reaction reappears. Benedryl is good for reducing hives.

I have anxiety induced hives and it stinks. The best way to prevent them...or the severity is to take zyrtec everyday. I have yet to find a way to completely get rid of them that doesn't involve major drugs.

Have you ever tried taking fish oil? I take it for anxiety and ADD issues every day, and I noticed a HUGE difference.

Fish oil helps with ADD??? Wow! Good to know! I must try this out on my son who is ADD and who has an uphill battle here in Italy, where no one knows anything about it.
                        Thanks for the tip!

It's supposed to be great for anybody with brain issues, eg. Bipolar disorder, depression, ADD, Alzheimer's.

You have to take a lot! I take 6,000 mg a day, which is 6 pills. (I take 2 at each meal.)

I would recommend a brand called Barlean's. It is available at Amazon.com. Don't buy cheap fish oil, it won't work as well!

I noticed dramatic differences within the first couple of days. Good luck!

I'll definitely give this a try. My lad needs any help he can get! Thank you so much!
