  • When did Mr Sandman go?

Ok I am on the tail end of the 14 day intro phase and I can not fall asleep to save my life. I am happy with the weight loss so far, but I do not want to stall it by taking sleeping pills.

Is this lack of drowsiness typical? I was a very high carb intake person prior to getting down to less than 20 a day to go on Atkins! I wonder if this has anything to do with it?

    Any similar stories and/or advice?

    Thanks

Re: When did Mr Sandman go?

Lots of people experience less need for sleep once the 'Atkins energy' kicks in

As long as the changed sleep pattern is not leaving you tired then I don't think you need to do anything special to counteract it - just see it as a gain of extra hours in the day to do something else

Some members have reported that their houses have never been so spick and span, while others find they can get their exercise in outside the normal time they used to do it!

Some member have cleaner houses....some members just post more!!! Take your pick!

I can't sleep more than five hours at a time now...no matter what. The only time I do is when I have been a little sleep deprived. Enjoy this....it's another benefit with this WOE/WOL. This is truly the only way I know to buy time. No other way to get that!

If you wish to sleep a little longer, to feel some exhaustion, I highly recommend some afternoon strenuous exercise. Your body will soon seek a little more rest for muscle recovery. Works every time for me now.

Be sure not to exercise too close to bedtime, that will wire you and make it hard to fall asleep. A family member said that, as a guideline, you don't want to work out later than 5 or 6 pm. Of course if you are working all day that could be difficult. But for example, you wouldn't want to work out at 10:30 or 11 pm if you go to bed at midnight.

I can feel your frustration, I have had lifetime insomnia and still do. If you're finding that lately you're taking 2+ hours to fall asleep, ask your doc about it. He/she might be able to help you find out why your regular sleep habit has changed.

One last thought is to make sure you're not hungry before bedtime. A small protein snack is good (if you're hungry).

Re: When did Mr Sandman go?

I have had trouble with sleeping on a regular schedule occasionally on and off throughout my life, so I hadn't really considered that Atkins might be contributing to my currrent sleeping patterns. Perhaps it has been, though.

When I am doing "good," I fall asleep by 1am and will sleep about 7 hours. That is plenty for me. But for several months now, it can be 3am, 4am, 5am, and I am still awake and not all that sleepy or tired. Eventually I do fall asleep, and if nothing wakes me up, I will sleep 5 to 7 hours. I don't feel tired most days, but it does concern me a little. Plus I don't want to sleep so late in the mornings even when I can. Some days I have to get up after only 3 or 4 hours sleep, and after several days of that in a row, I will somewhat crash and sleep maybe 8 or 10 hours.

I haven't found any great cures so far. I read usually, and that seems to help some. Listening to relaxing music as I fall asleep seems to help too. I also have a small snack right before trying to go to sleep. I don't know if it helps or not, but it doesn't seem to hurt, and I know if I wake up mid-sleep and am hungry I will end up STAYING awake for way too long, so a small protein snack may prevent that.

I'll be glad to get back to a more normal routine of going to sleep by 1am one of these days. Maybe I will try melatonin.

hot bath before bed time helps relax you. And I found that just this time around, coffee after a certain hour bothers me. never did before---maybe the carbs absorebed the caffeine. LOL
