  • Skin Problems Anyone?

Hello all. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed skins problems since starting Atkins. I've been back on Atkins for two months and this past month my face has broken out terribly. I am 61 years old and WAY past the acne stage.

I'm not using any new makeup, cleansers, or added any new foods. This may have nothing whatsoever to do with my Atkins WOE but is really starting to bug me. Hey, clear skin was one of the advantages of old age!!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Sorry to hear that. When I slip and go off plan my face breaks out but when I am on plan it clears up wonderfully. It is opposite for me.

It could be how the toxins leaving your body affects you.

It could be a food intolerance ... have you added anything new?

Mine has done that too and I've struggled for months to figure out why. Finally, I stopped using my regular cleanser and moisturizer and switched to a mild soap and neutrogena and my skin looks better than it has since I started Atkins. Granted, it's not doing anything for wrinkles or loose skin, but it's better than huge sores!

Do you mind me asking what kind of Neutragena? Do you mean soap or moisturizer? Thanks.

I'm sorry...it's NOT neutragena. I was looking at my daughter's stuff. What I use is the Lubriderm advanced therapy lotion.

Thanks -- I'm going to try that. I really hate this.

I hope it works for you. I think there are so many changes going on in our bodies that things tend to flip out from time to time and it's a major search to figure out what we need.

It's definately been the opposite for me. I don't know if its the foods I'm eating, the tons of water I drink, or heck maybe the sweat from exercise cleaning out my poors, but since starting Atkins my skin has been remarkably clear.

                      Re: Skin Problems Anyone?

I had skin problems for the first month and a half. But I kept drinking a ton of water, took fish oil, skin brushes and it got much better. I always had some acne and would get small boils before Atkins. My doctor said it was from being fat and some other factors, all which would improve with healthy exercise and simple skin care (light scrubbing, sauna, etc).

All of that is gone now. Just stick with it. Think of it as your body's way of cleaning itself out. My doc told me that the skin is where most of your 'waste' comes out of. You lose a lot more sweat than you do the other 'stuff'. Right know your body is getting rid of the junk. Sweat is 99% water, a tiny % of electrolytes and almost 1% toxins. But that 1% is nasty stuff.

My body is behaving strangely(but not in a bad way); new zits (40 years old) are popping up, but my mood and energy levels also really good (perpetually depressed and cynical for most of my adult life - glad I didn't start wellbutrin!) Gotta take the good with the bad and be grateful that my body is doing SOMETHING.

Be sure that you're eating veggies. I'm mentioning this because in my 20s, I did Atkins the wrong way-I ate only protein and fat. Over the long term, my skin broke out and twice I had to get steroids to treat it. My scalp was so dry and sensitive that I had to cut my hair short (rather than tie it back)-it hurt that badly.

Doing it now (the right way), I have no problems with my skin. What happened to me may not be the same situation with you, but I wanted to mention it just in case.
