  • Induction- no caffeine at all?

Its my first day, and I had tea (no sugar) instead of coffee today since I understand coffee is completely off limits. Is it ok to have caffeinated drinks with no carbs...such as diet sodas or sugar free redbull? Please advise! Thanks!!!

    It's not "completely" off limits.

Not exactly. See the note in Chapter 11.

Some people continue to drink regular coffee and are fine with it. In Atkins Diabetes Revolution, 1-2 cups of regular coffee are "allowed", with meals, as long as one is not unusually sensitive to caffeine.

Caffeine can trigger cravings (Ch. 11)... and for some people it stalls or slows down weight loss (Ch. 15).

diet sodas or sugar free redbull?
I wouldn't recommend any. Between diet caffeinated junk and coffee, coffee is a much better choice, imo.

And sweeteners are limited to 3 per day.

Coffee is my nemesis - and problem
I am one of those people who gets hungry drinking coffee. I only discovered this doing Atkins and cutting out out for induction. When I reintroduced it in OWL (phase 2) I realized this. DUH - I had snacked myself obese over the last few years and not understood that coffee (which I drank all day long) makes me eat. I am so glad I know this now. Has made my life easier. I still have some coffee but at times when I can control my reactions to it. Not ALL day long

I was a hardcore caffeine addict. I would drink multiple Dr Peppers and bug cups of coffee every day. It got so bad that I was actually getting pains in my stomach and my Dr told me they wouldn't go away unless I quit caffeine.

All of the articles I read online said it would take 3 or 4 days of dealing with symptoms (like headaches and problems sleeping) and then everything would be cool. It took me close to a month of dealing with those symptoms.....but now I feel so very much better not putting even the slightest bit of caffeine in my body. I have been this way for a year now and I actually sleep soundly at night.....something that never happened before. I never had any idea how serious a drug caffeine really is but we are all better off without it.

Re: Induction- no caffeine at all?

I have always drank coffee with heavy cream. Just a dab. My mother drank it that way and passed it on to me. I drink only about 2- 3 cups a day (1 breakfast, 1 afternoon, and 1 after dinner as a dessert) The second two depend on my energy level and hunger level. The mid day coffee often was to quiet my hunger pangs and boost my alertness(i am a website designer). I often had coffee with extra cream to tide me over until dinner. It never made me hungry it actually did the opposite. Now on this diet the mid day coffee seems to be a must because the induction is making me soooo tired and i know I am losing weight because I am freezing! the hot coffee and caffiene perks me up enough to finish my work without my fingers freezing to the keyboard.

It could be that you're going through carb withdrawals.

It could be that you're not drinking enough water.

It could be that you're not eating enough Induction vegetables.

Re: Induction- no caffeine at all?

I've always had caffeine on this WOE, however diet soda spikes my cravings to this day and makes me feel hungry. I still have it sometimes though.
Try it, if it works for you and doesn't cause any problems - great, if not then cut it out.
Redbull wouldn't really be induction friendly, I do drink sf Redbull now (just had one actually) but it has 3 carbs in one little can... On induction I don't think it'd be worth drinking 3 carbs out of your allotted 20.
Also, from experiance, when I drink soda I usually don't fit in all of my water.

Re: Induction- no caffeine at all?

In my Atkins experience, caffeine hasn't caused me any problems with cravings or the like. I've kept it to 1 cup per day with no problems...and the days I don't have it, I don't terribly miss it. I have it with heavy cream, no sweetener. Obviously, other people's mileage varies here, so read all the feedback and carefully consider how you proceed.

Diet sodas don't do much for me anymore. I'll admit to the occasional (once a month, if that) diet Coke, but most occasions I'll choose unsweetened iced tea or plain water. Water is the most important thing you'll drink all day, despite what the caffeine monster may tell you, so make sure you get your daily allotment in - at least 64 ounces, no excuses. I do 80-90 lately, and I feel like I pee all the time, but I also feel GOOD!

I used to drink the "zero carb" Rockstar (I never liked Red Bull, so I can't speak for it), but the longer I do Atkins, the less tolerant I am to things that are so full of chemicals and sweeteners. I tried some on an overnight shift about two weeks ago, since I couldn't nap and was SO SO tired...and I ended up with the most achy, gassy stomach for the rest of my shift. So not worth it! Again, your mileage may vary, but think carefully about what you put into your body. When I find myself faced with exhaustion now, I eat a healthy Atkins snack (peapods/broccoli/jicama with dressing, an ounce of cheese, leftover dinner meat, etc.) and drink extra water...it totally beats an upset stomach.

I will ONLY weigh once per week! I will refer to DANDR 2002 and this forum when I have questions. I will revel in new recipes, new clothes, and the new feeling of being happy in my skin. I will hold myself accountable to do this the right way, without excuses, because I know that Atkins is the best thing for my health and happiness. I. Will. Succeed!

Re: Induction- no caffeine at all?

It turned out I could have coffee. The coffee actually makes me feel less hungry. But I had cravings for AGES! Diet soda's kinda make me bloat a bit. And I found out most sweeteners just don't agree with me at all. Sometimes the sugar alcohols in particular cause my body to act like its had the real thing. So I tend to just have the black coffee. Try to try just one thing at a time if you can. Once you add in several products at once, if one stalls you its the devil to find out which one it is! Proceed with caution.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                        1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                        2nd mini goal: 140!
                        3rd mini goal:135!
                        4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

Really it depends on the person. I'm a high school teacher who used to think I might prefer a caffeine i.v. drip instead of coffee, but... LOL

Funny thing is since doing Atkins I have more energy and went from drinking a pot of coffee a day to drinking only one to three cups a day. I also used to take it "straight out the bean" as I liked to say. Today I have it with cream. Yum. Hasn't caused a stall nor cravings.
