  • Pistachios...

I know it's possible to overeat on anything that we are allowed to eat, especially as we move up the rungs.

On Sunday, I committed my first faux pas. I didn't measure out my pistachios and probably had 3-4 servings instead of just one.

    I paid for it yesterday.

I am also paying for it today as I am home sick from work.

On the bright side, all that fibre went through me very quickly and my stomach doesn't hurt anymore. Plus - I just hit my third mini-goal.

I will take that feeling into consideration the next time I feel the need to throw caution to the wind and overeat on something.

Overeating is what got me to my beginning weight (I can't keep blaming it on pregnancies - not fair to my kids). So I resolve to take this more seriously and continue to MEASURE my food, as overeating comes very easily to me.

    Mini Goals:
    Goal 1 - 10% (September 13th, 2009)
    Goal 2 - Pre-Pregnancy Weight with 2nd Child (September 27th, 2009)
    Goal 3 - 50 lbs down (December 1st, 2009)
    Goal 4 - Highest Pregnancy Weight with 1st right before c-section (February 20, 2010)
Goal 5 - Lowest weight reached on WW after having 1st child
    Goal 6 - 100 lbs down
    Goal 7 - Pre-pregnancy weight with 1st
Goal 8 - Weight I met my husband
    Goal 9 - 150 lbs down
    Goal 10 - Weight in Grade 8
    Goal 11 - Weight in Grade 6

    Re: Pistachios...

Remember the "preferred" nuts are macadamias, almonds, pecans, and walnuts.

An ounce of macadamias (whole dry roasted with salt) is about 10-12 macadamias and the net carb count is 1.34.

An ounce of almonds (whole unroasted) is about 23 almonds and the net carb count is 2.4.

An ounce of pecans (unroasted) is about 19 halves and the net carb count is 1.23 net carbs.

An ounce of walnuts (unroasted) is about 14 halves and the net carb count is 1.99 net carbs.

An ounce of pistachios (dry roasted with salt) is about 49 kernels and the net carb count is 4.69 net carbs.

Hmmm...time to go do a re-read, thank you! I was measuring by in the shell with 1/3 cup as a serving. On the package that was 5 net carbs.

Well I am glad you figured it out. Nuts are so tricky
So what do you mean you paid for it?

          Re: Pistachios...

I paid for it with horrible stomach pains yesterday that started making me think I was coming down with the flu because I was clammy and cold. Plus every time I stood up I was feeling dizzy, and was SUPER clumsy yesterday - I dropped my keys I don't know how many times, same with my purse. I just couldn't function well yesterday.

I wonder if there was something else, but I'm not sure...maybe a sensitivity? Or maybe it's all just in my head and I really am ill, but not because of that. Either way, it scares me to want to try that again, so I won't need to find out the answer to that.

            Re: Pistachios...

The "serving" should be 1 ounce ... and with pistachios, you wouldn't count the shell.

An ounce of pistachios is a "lot" of them, imho.

Just over eating pistashios would not have that effect - so yeah either it is something else or maybe sensitivity - I cannot eat some nuts like macademia. But it really does sound like you are coming down with something. Make sure you drink lots

                Re: Pistachios...

I don't think I was going over with my normal measuring then, I was getting 5 net carbs when eating the 1/3 cup of "in the shell" pistachios. It was a nice snack, and to me it didn't seem like a lot. According to the package, the serving size is exactly as you have suggested it is, but instead of going by weight, I was using the measuring cup because that's how my package gauged it.

Just the overeating on Sunday was too much.

This isn't the package that I got mine from, but this is the exact same information (except it went by cup size instead of weight - though the cup size said that was how much by weight).

Nutrition Facts Serving Size 49 nuts in shell (30g)
                Amount Per Serving
                Calories 170
                Total Fat 14g
                Saturated Fat 1.5g
                Polyunsaturated Fat 4g
                Monounsaturated Fat 7g
                Cholesterol 0mg

                Dietary Fiber 3g
                Sugars 2g
                Protein 6g

And yea, I'll be drinking the water for sure...yesterday was really difficult just because of how I felt, I had it around me at all times though and was sipping on it all day, but I know it wasn't much.

                  Re: Pistachios...

                  I am not understanding this
The serving size is 1 oz - which is the limit of nut allowance - if that is what you had had you would have been good. So have that next time. Count out 49 nuts in a cup and hide the rest. If you cannot stop after 49 nuts - you cannot have them again.

Nuts are an exception to the OWL 5-carb rule. Most nuts are added in 1oz servings (not 5 carbs as with most OWL Rung foods), cashews are added 1/2 ounce at a time (an exception to the exception).

i get sick like that too when i eat old store bought nuts that are not fresh and are burnt and rancid everytime i eat them i get sick its happend alot of times now so i know its them and i do not eat them anymore

i find i have to eat the most fresh nuts in order to not get sick there are some at the store for example almonds that still have that musky forest smell and are moist not hard however my stomach cannot handle much fiber at all so nuts are extremely hard for me to eat even if they are fresh
