    found this on yahoo answers

There is numerous research that has been done to prove that the atkins diet is one of the most unhealthy diets on the planet. Yes, you will lose weight, and yes, you will fit into a smaller size pants. But what you are exchanging that for are clogged arteries and an unhealthy heart. I urge you to do some serious investigating before embarking on this insane diet.

I would suggest that you read Diet for a new America, and The Food Revolution both by John Robbins. Meat and dairy products are very dangerous for our bodies. Consider a vegetarian diet, and if you can go all vegan, you will lose weight and be healthier in the long run.

    Good luck.

      Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!

Meat and dairy products dangerous... hmmm... funny how we all got here when our ancestors (with some exceptions) ate loads of meat, fat and dairy products... and in the absence of crappy refined carbs, the incidence of many "western diseases" was actually less. Not that it sounds appealing to me, but there are populations in some countries who subsist almost exclusively on only animal products and almost no vegetable matter whatsoever (Alaskan Inuits, some African tribes) and who are much more healthy than the average American.

Funny, I was under the distinct impression that eating the standard recommendation of a low fat, high carb diet as I did for a number of years that always kept me near 350 pounds was dangerous, too - if you assume weighing nearly twice what you should to be dangerous, which I think is a fairly safe assumption.

So if weighing 350lbs is dangerous, and eating meat and dairy is dangerous but allows me to dump a bunch of pounds, I think I'll take my chances with the meat and dairy.

As an environmetalist and animal rights type person, I love the idea of a vegan diet, and have been mostly to nearly total vegetarian for portions of my life, but the truth is, I don't think some of us function well on that type of diet biologically. I lost some weight initially, but not nearly enough, then never lost any more. Although it isn't what I would choose if I could, I had to greatly increase meat/diary products in order to do low carb and be able to control my hunger levels. As I near goal, I hope to be able to veer back somewhat towards more vegetarian meals, but it definitely requires more planning to be balanced nutritionally and I never found it quite as filling as a fatty serving of steak, etc. I will have to be near goal to do that since it almost necessitates eating more grains, legumes, and so forth to get what you require, and with the increased carbs, I know I will not lose much if anything.

By looking at our teeth alone we can easily tell that we are omnivores. We have insicors and canines for cutting and tearing through meat while we also have bicuspids and molars to grind through plants and other vegetation. By cutting either meat or veggies out of your diet you are basically denying what your body was designed for.

I'm sure cavemen weren't going around saying, "Dude! Don't eat that, it's too fatty!"

Our body needs fat to survive aswell. Without a good balance of it in your body it will have trouble functioning.

Eeek! I post on Yahoo Answers all the time. If you give me the link, I'll post a link THERE to that study that refutes everything that person said.

Notice, there was a plug for a book at the end. That poster is beginning to sound like a seagull....flies over every potential target, drops its crap, and flies away.

your comment is typical ignorance...your comment alone let's me know you have a lack of knowledge as to what the Atkins diet really is..u obviously are one of those people who believe that Atkins dieters only eat greasy meat and cheese...please get a clue immediately. The atkins diet I've followed allows me to consume a lot of vegetables, water, no refined sugars, fiber, fish, chicken, etc. I have had my blood chemistries checked 3 times this year alone (only because i've been anemic since birth)...per my physician, i have No high cholesterol...no high blood pressure...no diabetes...no kidney problems...no migraines...my health is great and I've been eating the atkins way for over a year now and i've lost 90lbs...it's way more advantages to Atkins than fitting into a smaller size pants size.My energy is through the roof! Not only do I look good, I FEEL good. Thank you for your concern, but you have been misinformed....if done correctly you will have excellent benefits.
It bothers me when know it alls come on this site to dictate why we shouldn't do a diet that is very healthy. research that and have a good day.
