  • What are your opinions on grass-fed beef...

...other than that it costs alot?

I've recently ordered some grass-fed steaks, ground beef, bologna (beef, salt, spices) and hot dogs (beef, celery salt, spices). I went in on an order with other people to make the economics work out. Price-wise, it came to about halfway between corn-fed beef and Whole Foods pricing.

What particularly spurred me to try it was reading in the Primal Blueprint (Sisson) that you should avoid the fattiest cuts of traditional steaks/beef because that's where most of the toxins are stored. This bummed me out because I was a huge fan of rib eyes and 80/20 ground beef. With grass-fed antibiotic-free beef, that isn't an issue.

Unfortunately, mail order is probably my only real source of this, so I'm going to go through the stuff I ordered (about 3-4 months worth) and see what I think.

I'm curious about others' thoughts on this...

im planning on trying to order grass fed organic cow organs and fat

the organ meat is not overpriced and the non organic cow fat here is free at the store so maybe the organic cow fat will be super cheap to buy

Excellent for health. The "bad" stuff you hear about red meat does not apply to grass-fed...not sure it even applies to corn-fed in the way the news hypes it up...but I digress.

Anyway, it's very healthy for you. No antibiotics or growth hormones, etc. It's a great source of omega-3's. It supports farmer's who are good to the environment and take better care of the animals. All around, just better for you.

I am a convert and ordered 1/2 a cow last year and this year. Last year's tasted a little gamey and was a little tough for the steaks. This year's has excellent flavor and is very tender. I love it.

I always choose grass-fed over other beef ("other" which I refuse to call "conventional" as large, confined corn feeding lots was not the way cattle were raised ever historically until the last several profit-driven decades and is totally unnatural) when I have the chance.

For a large variety of reasons related to health issues, animal treatment issues, environmental reasons, etc, which I haven't the energy to go into this evening.

I would love love love to eat only grass-fed beef, but it's not within our budget. I've been reading up on it and it appears to be much healthier for people for a variety of reasons, many of which are listed in the others posts here.

I love the idea and the meat is suppose to be better for you. I also eat buffalo meat that is grassfed. I love the flavor, so much better than beef.

Grass fed, free range beef is so much healthier and tastier too. I wish it were available in grocery stores...sometime I have to get store beef because I've run out of certain cuts that I ordered online. One of my local groceries is now carrying grass-fed ground beef so there's hope maybe.

Love grass-fed bison too. The ground version is in the local stores but I have to order steaks online.

Luckily here we can get grainfed/homrone free pretty much everywhere. And it doesn't cost too much more than the regular stuff. But if it did I think it'd be worth the extra $.
I think it has so much more flavor and is leaner. And I really like the peace of mind that I'm not filling mine and my families bodies up with more hormons and crap..
I'm all about it.. but not crazy about it, if it's not available I don't sweat it.
We also usually use buffalo instead of cow meat too... not always but about 75% of the time.

Adreliluc- Do you think they feed Buffalo corn? I have not really seen Organic Buffalo meat in the store. I do know that it is leaner then beef though. Are you able to find Grass Fed Organic Buffalo Meat? (P.S you look great!)

Its just not in my budget. But its great for you. Maybe I could talk my dad into killing me a few deer? Bet the sorry things have been eating off the corn piles around our neighbors' stands though. Some people don't seem to understand that they have to be where the deer are when they are there. They tend to think throwing corn to the deer will make them better at finding one. We keep telling them that if they have to feed them they are farming them not hunting them. Since my budget is tiny I have to go without grass fed anything, including the local wildlife. And yes it is illegal to bait game.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                      1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                      2nd mini goal: 140!
                      3rd mini goal:135!
                      4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.
