Re: Biggest loser finale is on
Yes! Just finished watching it half an hour ago! Was really good!! Was sad though that the guy they asked to come back to the show to weigh in (season 3? winner) didn't make it back to the finale. I thought for sure he would. Super neat though that Shay is getting motivation to lose as much weight as possible by the next finale.

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
They are sponsored by a chewing gum company so they have to have those things.
I enjoyed the finale. Everyone had done so great. It was great to see Shay and Daniel back. That girl Rachel had sure changed.

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
While I watch the show, I often shake my head at the conventional wisdom bandied about ("low-fat," gum, cereals/grains, protein-shakes, etc.). Also, I wonder how many people watch the show and conclude that the only way to lose weight is to work out 6-8 hours a day with some of the best equipment/opportunity in the world. It's really a silly program and more "unreality" TV than reality TV. I listen for a careful ear of any mention of "carbs" and I never hear it - it's all "low-fat" and "high-protein."
That said, I'm happy for all those folks who do change their lives. I just wish they'd call a spade a spade and explain that their "program" is unrealistic for anyone not on the ranch. I/m afraid it sets people up for disappointment when they don't lose 15 lbs a week.- M/37

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
While I agree that it is a reality show and all the manipulated issues that arise from that I do think it can be inspiring. So many people think they cannot lose weight but the show proves that with hard work and dedication you can do it.
They definitely eat low calorie on the show but they are very conscious about carbs as well.
I think many people try Atkins because they want to lose 15 lbs a week sitting on their buts and that is not very realistic either.

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
If they're conscious about carbs, they certainly don't verbalize it on the show. I listened with a very careful ear for any mention of "low-carb" or "carbs." All I see them is pushing whole wheat 6-inch Subway subs without any condiments (except mustard), Cheerios, sugar free gum, chicken and other grainy low-fat fare (e.g. those ridiculous "protein" (ok, candy) bars they pushed on them, and where Liz was scolded by Bob for tearing into hers right away). Where's the discussion/awareness of carbs in that? Or, did I miss some of their discussion/analysis about carbs? (It's possible I missed something.) The focus, it seems to me, was the same old tired CW of low-fat and "calories in-calories out." Heck, even that Body Bug they wear on their arms is crazy: "Hmm, Suzie, what does your body bug say you've burned today? Only 480 calories? Well, you'd better get on the treadmill for a couple of hours!"but they are very conscious about carbs as well.- M/37

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
Yeah subway and cheerios are big sponsors. So I agree that that does not leave the viewer with the correct impression of what the contestants may be eating. But as far as I can tell from watching their food segments - they eat healthy carbs. (I will probably get it trouble for saying healthy carbs)
Here is an analysis of the diet. I have no idea how accurate it is

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
yes, they certainly do try to push the contestants toward more fruits and veggies, which is good. So, while they don't mention "carbs," it factors into their approach. What I'd love to know is what the contestants ate while they were home and before the finale. It's interesting/curious that they don't show anything about their daily routine. They could have easily done that camera-wise without spoiling the reveal. I wonder (ok, suspect) that many of them went low-carb.- M/37

Re: Biggest loser finale is on
My husband met a former contestant on the show; he'd lost close to 100 lbs. before he was voted out and it was because he mentioned to a few friends--subversively--that the workouts are maybe an hour long a twice a day, not 6-8 hours per day.
"That would kill a person" he told hubby. His doctor said that there's a breakeven point when you're doing cardio/working out that's basically the law of diminishing returns.
When we saw Shay on Jay Leno, she mentioned that she works out 4-6 hours a day with four or five trainers. Really? OMG! Seems like someone's got their hooks into her.
ANyway, we thought it was very interesting. Love the show. So proud of everyone.
