  • Life after atkins, how hard it to keep it off...

My brother has been on atkins for 2 months and he's losing amazing weight and he's got me interested. I've gotten overweight over the last few years and I'm having a **** of a time getting it off. I'm interested in trying atkins to get my weight down, then transition over to a low calorie lifestyle and keeping it off that way. I work with a lady who says she did atkins, lost everything she wanted but as soon as she started a normal eating lifestyle it came back like gangbusters! I wonder if maybe she just fell back into her old lifestyle and ways of eating.. She claims she didn't. What is yalls experiance with this?

I know it being an atkins boards I'll probably get preached to about it being a lifestyle and lifelong.. But it's just not feasable for me to live my life low carb forever with my family being itallian I'd have to run away to avoid carbs as needed to continue atkins for a lifetime. I sure would love to use it as a tool to get the weight off then get back to eating like I did before I began the binge eating.. Just eat healthy and sensible.

    Thanks for your help.

No preaching-just facts. It's not going to happen. It is a lifestyle.

You might find it easier than you think... I've lived in Italy for most of my life (and I'm 56!), have an Italian family... complete with the usual wonderful cook in my MIL...
Like you, I didn't think it would be possible, but amazingly, I find it easy. I have a few standby fav substitutions, but use them infrequently.

Any weight loss program will lead to re-gain (plus more) when you revert back, unless you are very careful and exercise lots.

Give Atkins a go... you might be surprised.

So what you're saying is: you plan to do the same thing this lady did, which she already admitted didn't work for her. The answer is in the question, don't you think?

I'm sort of dipping my toe in the pool of this WOE, and I can tell you I feel better on it than off of it. It is sustainable, if you're willing to find things you like to eat on the WOE.

If you are having a hard time taking off the weight now using a low calorie approach this may be an indication that you are carb sensitive (insulin resistant?) That means every time you eat carbs the body super quickly stores it as fat and then ask for more food - it is a vicious cycle that you can only break by low carbing.

I agree with Sally: try it. It is worth a try. You may like it a lot more than you think. I did not start this thinking I would be doing it two years later but here I am.

I have learned my body does not work with a "normal" diet. This has to be a lifestyle choice for me. But the "normal" diet you speak of is not normal at all. The introduction of high levels of sugars and processed starches is a 20th century dietary pattern. Before that, when obesity and cholesterol were less of an issue, peoples' normal diet was much much closer to Atkins maintenance. Just food for thought.

Great post Jill. Normal for many, at least in the US, is now gluttony!

Excerpt from above link---WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of obese American adults outweighs the number of those who are merely overweight, according to the latest statistics from the federal government.

                  >>I'm interested in trying atkins to get my weight down, then transition over to a low calorie lifestyle and keeping it off that way.>>

Why do you think "low calorie" will work better than the Atkins maintenance phase?

And there is no "off" Atkins ... just as there's no "off" any "diet" ... without consequences of weight gain!

                  >>it's just not feasable for me to live my life low carb forever with my family being itallian>>

You've already admitted defeat ... so my suggestion would be to "diet" using low calorie ... or whatever "quick fix" will get you to lose the weight "this time".

Any successful weight loss plan is about maintaining the weight loss ... there's no "off" of any lifestyle change!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Also, please keep in mind that pretty much everyone comes from a family where not eating carbs is "odd" to them. You're Italian, well I'm Cajun. Red beans and rice, gumbo (with rice), jambalaya (major component is rice)... My favorite food is (was) sushi, too... I never saw myself doing Atkins as a long-term lifestyle, but here I am.

What I meant was when she went back to eating carbs I think she wasn't just eating carbs and otherwise a healthy diet; she was eating whataburger, mcdonalds, etc. I heard she was taking in a lot of calories. She says otherwise but I was hearing she was eating the same way as before the diet. So no the answer is not in the question.

Thanks to those helpful posts. I do truly want to lose the weight... And I often joke I'm a meatarian, maybe atkins will work for me. I'm thinking I'll give it a try.

Hoss, just read the book, plan and prepare, and give it a shot - what do you have to lose My husband never thought he would/could do it, but here we are - 10 months later, and now he's doing a lot of the [lo-carb] cooking! I would certainly never think to go back to how I was eating pre-atkins.

Also keep in mind that as you progress you get to add foods back. When you are doing it correctly you don't feel that deprived and the OWL rungs appear to have helped people figure out which carbs they can eat and still stay slim. That is what it sounds like you want. You get to eat in a way that will allow you to remain slim and yet maximize the amount of carbs your body can handle. When I look this stuff up in other places on the web I am shocked how many people think its all meat and cheese. Oh and they love to go on about all the saturated fats. Get the book everyone's recommending DANDR 2000. Give it a read. You may find that you are going to be allowed a lot more than you are envisioning right now.
