  • BMI bummer

Hi all~ Hope you are doing well and eating healthy!

I feel so good with my weight, it's a great feeling to cross my legs when I sit down. It's nice to be able to bend straight down without my belly getting in the way. Added attention from my husband is pretty nice too.

BUT..... then I got curious about my BMI, thinking I must be nearing a more normal number. I was really disappointed to see 32.3 . I should be happy because I used to be 39.1, but I saw that I have to lose 13 pounds just to be at the top of the overweight category & no longer "obese", gosh, I hate that word!!!!

Suddenly I wanted to cover myself with a mumu & slip out of the public eye. haha, please, people, talk me down!!

    Re: BMI bummer

Wow Michelly you have already lost 41 of the 83 pounds you have to lose. You should be proud. You have no reason to feel you look a certain way to the world just because some calculator doesn't like your height to weight ratio. I have a great therapy. Go buy a cheap calculator and run it over with your car. Look at that piece of trash and say "I don't care what you say, I am looking fabulous!" Keep up the good work and don't let something electronic bring you down. You are well on your way and you should feel nothing but proud of that.

      Re: BMI bummer

Don't be too hard on yourself. Right now I am 229lbs and I am almost fitting into a size 16. Why? Because muscle weighs more than fat. I grew up on a farm until the age of 18, worked on a saw mill, sold wood (which I split as well) at our local Provincial park and after college, lifted weights on a regular basis for 10 years. At my lowest weight EVER, of 175, I was a size 8. Studies now say that BMI is not always a good indicator of health, and that you should go by waist size as well, or instead of. Generally what I got from the article was that you should aim for a waist circumference 32" or below for women. The original article I read this in was on msn, but here is a link I found that explains it a little better.

Thanks AmandaRose, I immediately felt better after your post. Haha, I like the advice, I laughed out loud!
Maggiemuggs, the waist measurement thing is bumming me too. But someday, I hope to be happy about it!

There is more good news!! As you get closer to goal, I promise you, the BMI comes down quicker. When I started, I NEVER could have imagined a BMI of 23ish%. I had been 30+% for soooo long. Now, the only fat I can just grab hold of is trouble spots. For the most part, my body is becoming lean and muscular. You will get there too! Know that this WOE is the most muscle sparing way of eating and quite the way to build an athletic body. It will come! Now, go enjoy that extra attention from hubby and revel in it!

Awesome Everlosing! I can't wait for that day to come!! Congrats to you!
Hey MaggieMuggs, I can't stop thinking about you out there chopping wood as a youngster. My sister lives in Colorado & does alot of snow shoveling. I used to be impressed by her, but now I'm impressed by you.
I'm just barely getting into a sz 16 right now, some fit, some don't. It's fun buying the tight clothes & shrinking into them! Keep up the great work all, & thanks for reminding me that I'm okay & getting better!
