  • no gallbladder: low carb AND low fat ?

Hi everyone. Last year I had my gallbladder taken out. Since March of this year I tried some colon cleanse and ended up going to the bathroom a lot, then decided on doing the Atkins diet, or a less strict version of it. I have been going to the bathroom I guess more than normal and decided to go to the doctor because of what I thought what a hemrroid. I went yesterday and the doctor said because of having my gallbladder taken out I am not a good candidate for Atkins, does this make sense ? She mentioned that it has too high of a fat content for me, which is making me go #2 about 2-3 times a day, and it's loose.
I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem.
I am 34, F and would like to loose about 30 - 35 lbs. Does anyone know if there is a low fat & low carb diet plan ? What do you think of it, and what foods would be allowed ?

    Thanks for reading,
    ~ronnie

Atkins is a high fat way of eating. That being said, it is possible to do a lower fat version of it.

"You can follow a lower fat version of Atkins. Use fish, poultry, lean meats, and low fat cheese (in moderation) and lots of vegetables. Avoid creamy salad dressing; instead use olive oil and vinegar or a mustard based dressing. Eat nuts only in moderation. Don't fry foods, and use lean cuts of meat. Stay away from processed meats such as bacon and sausage. Supplementing with unsweetened, smooth textured, orange-flavored Metamucil or Benefiber daily will help bulk your stools. Take 1 tablespoon in a full glass of water and drink immediately."

Remember that no low carb plan is a quick fix.

Re: no gallbladder: low carb AND low fat ?

I had my gall bladder taken out while on Atkins and have never changed the way I'm eating because of it and haven't had any problems with fat intake. I did go up to maintenance for a few weeks while recovering from the surgery just to make sure that the fat quantity didn't bother me, but it never did.

Low fat + low carb do not mix very well as what do you eat instead? More protein? Excess protein gets converted to glucose by the body which kinda defeats the purpose of low carb. You can make better fat intake choices, such as more monosaturated fats and limit saturated ones. Olive oil, avocadoes, fish, etc, avoiding too much red meat.

It's also possible that certain foods affect you, not just fat. I also have IBS and your symptoms sound similar. What helped me is to keep a food log (like on Fit Day) and I discovered which foods were causing me issues, usually dairy and preservatives and other sauces that I do not know what's in them. Being on Atkins, I naturally avoid alot of the "fried" foods that you get out of a box or at a restaurant since you can never be sure of the ingredients or how they make them, but have found I can fry things at home and they do not bother me.

When I asked my doctor if I should change my way of eating since having my gallbladder out and was told no, LOL. Guess it depends on the doctor.

Ditto, I had mine taken out a few years ago and have no problems with the diet. I would say if it bothers you get a second opinion.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will continue on Atkins and watch my fat intake. My main issue was that I was going #2 too much, it being loose I ended up with a fissure, which is a true pain in the @ss !! lol. The pain I don't care about, it's the itching that drives me insane !!

Re: no gallbladder: low carb AND low fat ?

If you cut the fat and carbs there's not much left but protein, as you 'should' know, too much protein converts to glucose = spike in insulin = not good for you.

About 2 years ago I was in a stall that lasted FOREVER, so I thought I'd try going low-fat, low-cal, low-carb. Not only does that pretty much leave only veggies and meat, there's very little variety. After only a few weeks I had major muscle and joint pains, I started taking potassium worried that if all my muscles were cramping up then maybe my heart would cramp up too. The potassium didn't help...

The good news was I did lose weight. If I remember correctly almost 15 lbs.
The bad news is I wasn't feeding my body the nutrients needed to survive and what 'loss' I had quickly came back as soon as I went back to INDUCTION... the lbs came back plus some! And it was HARD to get back on track after that, obviously eating being so deprived and not really eating left me wanting to EAT! lol
That was the first time I learned that you CAN gain weight on a low-carb diet...

I learn the hard way, but eventually I do learn. lol

You have to pick something that you can live with and that is healthy. Plain and simple. What good is dropping weight if you can't stick with it and if you're going to suffer potentially long term side effects?

At least do a moderate fat diet... But really by the later phases of Atkins that is what you're eating. As you go through your rungs and eventually get to maintenance the levels of fat/carbs balances out quiet a bit.
Maybe if you're not doing well with the induction phase start moving up OWL asap.
Started Atkins on December 8th, 2005

            Officially Re-Focusing on 12-28-09.

            Was, Am, Will be: 280/222/175ish.
Started Dec 2005 and lost 105 lbs by mid 2006, maintained loss for the most part until 2009...then really let go & gained some back... lol

            so:
            Restart Progress:
            12/28/09 ~ 235.1
            01/04/10 ~ 229.0
            01/11/10 ~ 229.0 Grrrrr....
(Induction= only 6lbs but lost 10 inches! yay)
            01/18/10 ~ 227.4
            01/5/10 ~ 226.8
            02/01/10 ~ 222.6

Re: no gallbladder: low carb AND low fat ?

give your stomach time to heal with in a few months on atkins it should beable to handle food

try to avoid liquid grease drippings from say a roast beef if you eat to much of that it will give you the runs because you simply cant absorb it all

try to stick with more solid fats like eggs and fresh fat on ribeye steaks and butter

before starting atkins my gut was very damaged it took a good 6 months to fully 100% heal so just stick to it the protein and fat with this diet will heal your gut your gut should get better and better and hurt less and less every day

              also try avoiding these foods

White and black pepper, vinegar, capers, cinnamon, Cornstarch, Corn syrup, Nutmeg, Vanilla , Ketchup, pickles, mayonnaise, mustard, relish Coffee, Distilled liquor, Black Tea

and also try watching your fiber intake i cant handle to much fiber it hurts my gut but lots of other people like fiber

i like eating just the top flower part of broccoli and cutting the stems all off cause the stems are where the fiber is

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, IBD, IBS, Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac, & Candida Diet Program.

Ditto here... Had my gall bladder taken out several years ago, and Atkins works well for me in spite of it.
