  • Three Screws and a plate

    A set back for me.

Last Monday I was out cycling and hit a patch of black ice - I thought everything had thawed.

I have taken many-a-tumble in my years of cycling, but as soon as I was down I knew this was different. I went over so quickly there was no time to roll and my hip took the full impact.

So I have now been screwed back together - three screws and a plate - and will be on crutches for six weeks then another six weeks with a stick. Hey Ho!

With my activity level much reduced I am going to have to watch my diet carefully.

Do I regret all the cycling I have done in recent years? No, I will get back to it as soon as I can. Without the complete revision of my lifestyle that Atkins brought I might easily have been a Diabetic with blood pressure and other serious health problems.

As it is, I am a very fit 60 year old who happens to have broken a bone for the first time in his life. My muscles are in good condition, as is my cardio-vascular system. My bone density is excellent. There is a very good chance I will mend very well.

I must add my praise for Southampton General Hospital - the British National Health Service comes in for a lot of criticism, but they were quite excellent - the nursing and surgical teams.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Imagine such a break with weak muscles tone and poor diet??? Surely your recovery will be swift by comparison. Do take care and recover soon, and thank you for all you do for ADBB. xoxox

What a frustrating setback, but it sounds like you have (or have gained in the last few days ) a good attitude about it. Being forced to slow down and recover can be difficult, especially when you're broken and not sick.

Take the time it takes to heal, and maybe get some reading and computer time in. Something tells me you may be a little more active here for awhile A bonus for us...

Thanks for sharing the kuddos to your hospital since I'm here in the US and we know what's happening here.

Get well soon! Try to keep up w/ some range of motion exercises and maybe isotonic exercises too. This may be a good time on building arm/ upper body muscles too, easp if u have weights, if not find some canned food and start lifting (best use of canned corn imo).

Here is a quote told me by the chaplain at Headly Court which is the rehabilitation hospital injured British soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan use

"I am not an invalid: I just don't have any legs."

It's amazing what those guys achieve. My problems are nothing like theirs.

Oh Dear! How awful for you. It is just not right when you are in the process of improving yourself and you get a "kick" in the bottom as a reward!!!

I hope you get better quickly, and do not do more activity than you are told in your recovery.

Re: Three Screws and a plate

Although only a year or so younger than you, I too had a major bilateral orthopaedic procedure less than a year ago as a result of an accident. I am so grateful that I didn't have to encounter the complications due to being overweight! I found by recovery uneventful. Having bilateral knee replacements was thought to be insane by many friends, but, within a couple of weeks, I was very grateful I'd done it that way. I work out four or five days a week, I've hiked, I've done long walks, in better weather, I've ridden a recumbent bicycle for 15 miles several days a week. Your attitude is positive and I'm sure you will be back in form very soon. Blessing your way!

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.
