  • Fatty Liver?

    Hello all.

My husband wants to go on atkins. He did really well in the past. Now, today he went to the doctor, and his ultra sound suspects that he has gall bladder disease, and he will most likely have that removed.

They also said that he has a fatty liver, and that he should not eat fatty foods.

well, I am thinking if he loses weight on atkins wouldn't that also help his liver since he is losing weight?

Just curious what everyone has to say as she specificly said to stay away from fatty foods.

    Thanks!

    Huh?

Fatty Liver: Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) information at MedicineNet.com

I can offer you this ... my husband was diagnosed with this ... and after a few months of Atkins, his liver enzymes returned to normal... and have stayed normal.

I suspect what the doctor is really recommending is a low fat way of eating ... and if you read DANDR, you'll see that eating "fat" isn't the problem ... as long as one is eating low carb.

Is your husband ready to commit to Atkins "for life"?

        Re: Fatty Liver?

I was diagnosed with fatty liver 8 months ago....I haven't had any problems with it since I've stuck with Atkins. My doctor advised that I take the supplement Milk Thistle - that may have had something to do with it but I only took it for 1 month, so I doubt it. I've had 2 blood tests done since the first time they said my liver was "ok" so it's up to your husband but there are those of us who have benefited from the Atkins WOE.

          Re: Fatty Liver?

I had my gall bladder removed while on Atkins. It's likely the weight loss triggered enough buildup that it became aggravated. The doctor (surgeon) said to keep eating the way I always have, even when I told him I was on Atkins. He said if it's helping me lose weight to keep with it. Not sure if I had fatty liver (never showed up on tests) but it's likely I was heading that way at the rate I was going.

I'm really convinced it's all the starchy carbs that are much worse for us than fatty foods. Just see how your bloodwork tests improve after doing it for a while. That's evidence enough for me.

You might want to get a second opinion OR you might want to discuss this with his physician yourself. I work in a doctor's office....believe me....there are times when the doctor says 1 thing and the patient understands it as something else. Our doctors have come to the point where we print out a "to do list" at the end of each visit and some folks STILL misunderstand "Get your lab work by Friday January 1, 2010" as "Get your lab work in six months."

I don't think it's due to negligence or inattentiveness of either the patient or the doctor because there are plenty of reasons for communications-comprehension breakdowns.
