  • It was exactly one year ago today...

that I changed my life forever and found the Atkins diet. And I quickly learned it wasn't just another "diet" but truly honestly could be a "way of life"...

In the past - on other "diets" such as weight watchers or calorie counting, etc...i honestly thought I could change my life and eat that way for the rest OF my life but I could not. Even with weight watchers, which I was successful on for a little while - and I know can work for some - just did not work for ME for the long run. I could not constantly micro-manage every single bite of food I put into my mouth...but again, that's just me. I would "work" the diet for a good couple of months - feel great - but I just could NOT keep counting every single point/calorie I was eating and plus after a while my body just started craving FAT! I did count my carbs for a few months when I started, but also learned that I could do this myself withOUT counting everything - and that was the BEST thing ever!

So in walks atkins into my life...but it was more "sitting in wait" for me - as it had been a year and 3 months since my DOCTOR was the one who told me to do atkins and for that year and 3 months, since I found out I was Insulin Resistant - my doctor kept yelling at me, "cut the carbs, cut the carbs" at every single appointment I went to. And so finally my "last straw" was new years eve 2008/2009...when my fiance and I were at a party - I ate junk allll night long and - like usually happens when I did that - I got sick. Won't go into details but it's because of the Metformin I am on.

But anywhoo - that was the beginning of the absolute best year, weight/food wise for me. I was always one of the mindset that "lowfat" is the ONLY way to eat and that atkins was "CRAZY" for all the fat he touts people SHOULD eat...but then I myself started eating all that crazy fat and low and behold - 30 pounds melted off my body!!! (and I became a convert! hehe)

I also know a lot of what I was able to accomplish last year (weight-wise) was with the help of THIS board. I know I went MIA for about 5 months last year - but I did not forget anything I learned and continued on with my low-carb way of eating. Over the month of December I gained back a few pounds and on January 1, 2010 I weighed in at 170 after hitting my lowest of 165 just a few months before - and I knew I needed to go back to the basics before those pounds started creeping back up again...and it still continues to amaze me - yesterday I restarted induction and did 30 minutes of Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The pounds...and this morning I weighed back in at 168. Two pounds from one day of eating over 135 grams of FAT!!! (only 19 g carbs).

But I learned SO much last year - including SO many new foods that I never really knew existed...almond flour has become one of my absolute staples of food (and those WONDERFUL almond flour pancakes!! as well as bread I make for sandwiches). There's pretty much an alternative you can make at home for absolutely ANY thing you are "missing"...pizza, boneless buffalo wild wings (induction friendly!) and yes even cake/sweets.

So I just wanted to thank everyone on this board for helping me find the "right" way and for any newbees - do NOT be afraid of fat. FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT. sugar and starch are what make you fat.

Just be patient and realize that THIS is the way your body needs to eat for the REST of your life - and it IS possible!

    Thanks again, everyone!!!!

btw, quick update...it's been 2 full days on re-induction and I'm back down to 165.5!!!

Technically my "goal" has always been 160 and I've been happy maintaining at 167 - but my "hopeful" goal will be BELOW 160...gosh that would be freakin' awesome!

What more can I say than "thank you". I was starting to worry about my week in Florida away from my little world of cooking and being subject to whatever the in-laws have available...And you are right...I have already let them know I am on an eating plan, and now I need to stick to my guns! Your story inspired me..This WOE does work and that's all I need to remember. Thanks again...
