  • Unavoidable carb situation..how might you handle this?

    Hi all....
Here's one I've not seen here (and I check every day through posts, etc..I LOVE this supportive site and intend to become a supporting member TODAY).
To start, let me say that this WOE has changed my LIFE. From the GONE list are cravings, digestion issues, bad skin, overwhelming food addictioins and more. Not one bad effect...NOT one. I'm "finally free" that's what the "ff" stands for..thank you!!!!

Ok, so last night I went to dinner with clients and ordered calamari steak stuffed with shrimp and topped with lemon cream sauce. It came with pasta which I had no intention of eating and did not. Asked if it was breaded and told no, baked in oven.

I got this CARBOHYDRATE NIGHTMARE placed before me! It WAS breaded, and filled with some MIXTURE of god knows what, no identifiable shrimp in sight. It HAD to have sugar, flour AND cornstarch in that sauce which was GLOBBED all over the plate. I was horrified. First of all,it was awful, but I HAD to eat some. One lady in our group recommended the restaurant and RAVED about it. She even WATCHED me take first few bites with that hopeful look on her face, like.."do you love it? do you LOVE it?"

I put on my best academy award performance, shoved it around some on the plate, but ate some, too....
I'm proud of myself for not throwing in the towel and just saying' screw it" and eatinig every carby thing in sight. I didn't eat the pasta (looked gross, too...OMG) and came home hungry and had some prime rib peices and jicama to reach my 17 veggie carb goal. I didn't even eat the VEGGIES there cuz they were doused in this nasty, lumpy, carby sauce...

I SHOULD have stuck with my original salad idea, but she SO wanted me to try the special and enjoy it...I was "selling' that night, so I just went along and you gotta admit, the description sounded Atkins friendly.

Any thoughts on how to HANDLE this situation? What might you have done? it was a business meeting. I'm a personal trainer and they were re-signing for EXPENSIVE small group training and I really just wanted to go with the flow. I've learned how to avoid foods not on the plan and haven't had one KNOWN slip in six weeks. I've certainly learned here that some foods aren't good when I didn't know that, and stopped them, but never TAKEN a cookie and ate it, or any other thing.
    your input would be welcomed!

By the way, scale up almost two pounds today from 5 small bites, but it'll go back..I've WAY learned not to freak over small ups and downs..you guts taught me THAT (THANK YOU, ATKINS, FOR SAVING MY LIFE)

    >>she SO wanted me to try the special and enjoy i>>

Who's "she"? The client or the server?

And ... if I was told that something was baked and not breaded, and it came breaded, I would have sent it back. After all, the error in ordering wasn't yours.

As to the sauce ... well, almost any sauce like that will be thickened with a flour/cornstarch mixture ... so you can always ask for it on the side.

    >>What might you have done?>>

Ordered what I wanted. I would never allow someone to talk me into ordering a food I didn't want to eat.

Good job on keeping the long term perspective ... that this bounce up isn't deal ending!!!

I KNEW you were going to say that about letting her talk me into it! That's "people pleasing" and serves NO ONE..argh...

I hear ya about sauce on the side..for sure from now on....

And it was the CLIENT who was like, "The food here is sooo good you can have a salad anywhere, try the special" and I fell for it. Seriously..NEVER AGAIN and i couldn't really TELLif there was breading on it cuz there was so much disgusting sauce GLOPPED all over the place....Oh, I'm like RE-LIVING that nightmare...hahahahahaha.

      Thanks for the reply!

People pleasing is what got me to my highest weight.....THEY don't have to loose the weight, I do, so I don't let it happen anymore.

I agree, I would have sent it back if I had ordered something and it came breaded and wasn't how I had ordered it. I'm getting good about ordering ala carte or sending things back when they aren't cooked the way I ordered them. If you let the restaurant get away with it it's just harder on the next person following an eating plan to get what they ordered.

        Good luck next time.

They really would not have reupped if you'd ordered a salad? I'd think that would be a very good example for a PT to set - you know, staying true to plan in the face of temptation, etc. The woman who pressured you may have done so because she was unconsciously looking for your "approval" of the unhealthy foods she likes to eat (i.e., "If my PT eats it, how bad for me can it be?"). Just something to think about.

Her: "Have the special, it's just wonderful!"
Me: "I have allergies, so I stick to basics. I'll have a steak and a salad, but that special does sound nice."

In all my years, I've never met anyone who continued to force a selection on you when you mention allergies.

It's not really a lie because wheat and sugar products make me feel sick.

I've learned to avoid sauces and even salads sometimes are suspect. I ordered a Spinach Salad at Applebees and one bite told me it was laced with sugar. Just never know.
This is surely a live and learn diet.

If the waiter/waitress told me it was not breaded and it was, I would have sent it straight back and ordered something else. At restaurants, it's probably safest to order a salad with the dressing on the side. You could also specify no croutons (or pick them out of your bowl).

Both my hubby and I cringe when family ask us to go to restaurants because it's hard to know what's got junk in it and what doesn't.

I think it's odd that someone would recommend a dish that horrible sounding (from a health-perspective) to a person trainer. But you meet all types in this world......

I think you could have handled it as a "I'll eat the food I want to eat because the food I want to eat is healthy" situation. You are a personal trainer. You are supposed to be a role model for your clients---that includes your work ethic and how healthy you maintain yourself.

Be wary of these clients.....it seems to me they did this to see how much of a push-over you are and how much they can boss you around. So be careful during your training sessions with them: they seem like the sort who will weasel their way out of doing your program. (PS ask for your fee upfront. )

next time ask the lady how many carbohydrates are in the dish before ordering tell her you can't spike your blood sugar for health reasons xD

also since your the personal trainer you should set an example to not eat junk food and junk food is not just junk food its posion as seen in this video

Re: Unavoidable carb situation..how might you handle this?

I consider this way of life to be life supporting, and any cheat to be life threatening. And I used to think others were so highly concerned with my plate. Theyre not. They just want their guests to have a good time. I have learned that if a server is hesitant about a description or ingredients, I better double check my order. However if you asked about breading and here it's breaded... nah I'd tell her I must have received the wrong dish. Perhaps my unbreaded dish without pasta is still lonely in the kitchen. *snort*

I'll tell you this... before doing Atkins if my order got screwed up and they left off my gooey sauce or pasta or yadda yadda I sure didn't hesitate to send it back then. I also didn't care if my dinner hostess thought wow she sure eats a lot, wow she sure eats unhealthy, wow if she ate better she wouldn't be so obese... never worried me once. Why should I worry that someone might think I'm making healthier choices???

Yeah, I definitely would have sent it back, especially after specifically asking about the ingredients and all. I agree with the others that I typically tell someone (that I don't feel like explaijning to) that I have either an allergy or I just say I can't eat sugar or bread. If you say "can't", and not "don't" or "won't", then it implies that there is a health reason that prevents you from doing so. In that case, you don't hurt anyone's feelings...
