    Re: atkins failure

I just phrased it like that. I do believe her. She stuck to it and exercised a lot too and didn't lose weight for months.

What should I do to move to OWL? Eat more carbs gradually?

You move to OWL by adding 5 net carbs of vegetables to your Induction menu.

Are you reading the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution? You need to read about OWL (Chapter 14).

The sticky threads in the OWL forum might help, too.

How do you know if she "stuck to it" if you don't even know how Atkins works? OWL is an extremely important phase that must be followed in a specific way in order to determine what your food tolerances/intolerances are and what your CCLL (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing) is.

Please get your hands on the book and carefully read the stickies in the link that Gerogiana provided, in the mean time.

        Good luck

Please don't take this the wrong way, but very often some people on this board sound like a cult. I don't think Dr. Atkins who was a scientist would have wanted his every word hung on to like gospel. I think the stages are a guideline. You don't have to adhere to them exactly. If only he were alive today...

And a scientific theory can only be proven if it can be disproven. If Atkins isn't working for someone than they're eating too many carbs, too few carbs, too much fat, not enough fat, drinking 7 cups of water and not 8. There must be something that they are doing because the diet is 100% for 100% of the population.

I think Atkins works for most people. I don't think you have to do everything in the book exactly as written.

I have the gospel - DANDR 2000. And I know what's in it.

Most Atkins repeaters believed that the "first time", too.

            >> I have the gospel - DANDR 2000. And I know what's in it.>>

Do you mean 2002? If you mean 2000, then you have an older book, which is fine ... just not the book that's used here.

If you know what's in it, then why are you asking about how to move to OWL?

Sorry, I didn't read all the helpful comments in-between. I think she's someone who it didn't work for. It works for me and for most of the people here but not her. I think she's had thyroid issues. Could that be it?

I think she's not going to lose because there's a "y" in the name of the day of the week.

Now ... do you get the point that what you THINK isn't as important as what you KNOW to be true?

Rather than speculation about HER, focus on your own journey.

Discussing her does no one any good ... least of all your "friend".

Please understand that it is my responsibility as a Moderator to uphold the purpose of this board - we are based around the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. There are many message boards available on the internet that are based upon general low-carbing. This board is not one of them, but that does not mean that we are a "cult". We are just people who have experienced that following the plan as outlined by Dr. Atkins is what works best, and we provide an environment of knowledge and support for those who desire to make a full commitment.

                    Re: atkins failure

Yeah, I have 2002. I actually lent it to someone. I just wasn't sure what was so critical about OWL. I wanted to lose my weight and then add the carbs and see when I started gaining weight again.

Well, you do that with all the phases of Atkins.

                      Get your book back.

What do you mean? I want to lose my next 10 pounds (all I want to lose) while continuing to eat only 20 - 25 carbs a day. I don't think that's the exact recommendation in the book.

Yes, you're right ... that's not how it works.

If you want to do the "amazon1" plan, that's up to you.

                          However, we do Atkins here!

So the advice you get will be based on Atkins.

You are the one who asked for advice. "On this board", we give advice based on the book. If that's not the kind of advice you want...

I didn't actually ask for advice on me and "OWL", but thanks. I don't see why it matters if I see how many carbs I can eat without gaining weight before I lose the weight I want to lose or after. Since I lose about 1/3 of a pound a week now, it will take forever to even figure out if I'm gaining or losing weight by adding carbs. It makes more sense to me to just stick with what's been working and then after I'm at my goal, see how many carbs I can add.

I'm not someone who's been gorging on carbs all my life. I've been on a low-carb diet for about 25 years. I'm not going to go back to eating potato chips and candy bars when I reach my goal weight.

                                Up to you.

However, this is an Atkins board, and that's not how Dr. Atkins devised the plan.

You're not likely to get much support here for the "amazon1" plan.
