  • Opinions on Ham....

Hello! So I have been buying things in bulk - turkey, 15 lb hams and such, cooking them & frezing portions to save some $$ - this woe gets a bit pricey after awhile...
I have been eating ALOT of ham lately. Proably 8-10 oz or so. Think this is too much?

Depends on the ham and the price of the ham. I'm able to find hams with about 1 net carb per ounce serving....but I only buy them when ham prices drop to less than $1 per pound. When they do drop, I buy a couple of hams and store them in my freezer.

I can find ham with very little or no sugar - so I don't limit it. If I was buying ham with higher carbs/sugar content, I would limit it. Maybe a few ounces a week?

I also buy ham (& bacon & cheese, & ...) on sale & freeze it. Always have

        Re: Opinions on Ham....

I have problems with water retention so anything that is salty I wash under running water for quite awhile to get rid of the excess salt - it's the only way I can eat ham or any other salty foods.

Eat a little to see how you do - if you get cravings you probably ate too much and the sugar content caused them.

I buy everything in bulk and freeze it - some meats I can't eat much of but I have learned what I can and cannot eat.

        Good luck!

I love cooking ham with cabbage. I know ... who cares, but it has become my new winter meal.

I don't see what the problem is with water retention. Water retention is a temporary gain, but if you lay off the salty stuff for a few days the water goes away along with the pounds/inches. Working out hard causes water retention too. If you have blood pressure issues or other medical reasons, the by all means skip the pig.

I care Irish! I love ham & cabbage too. Sometimes I have ham, cabbage & turnip and pretend it's a boiled dinner. THEN....I chop the leftovers up in the food processor and have hash (sometimes hash and eggs).

                Re: Opinions on Ham....

I'm very wary of ham because, as someone else mentioned, it can contain salt and sugar. Personally, I don't like the water gain associated with either (and there are obvious reasons to avoid the sugar), so I won't eat ham unless I'm certain it's free of these things. If your is, I wouldn't worry about enjoying it.

I'm also glad to see that someone else thinks this WOE can be pricey. A long time ago I posted a question about budgeting on this WOE and everyone who responded expressed confusion and said that this was cheaper for them than how they used to eat. I was at a loss - meat and produce are expensive, at least where I live! I can often find deals on meat, but adding all those veggies has caused our grocery bill to skyrocket.
