  • How many carbs do you think is in this?

Hi All! Hope all is well!
It is very cold outside this time of the year and I am one that likes soups every now and then when it is winter.
So, my Mom used to always make chicken broth during the winter. All you do is put a whole chicken in a pot and then cover it with water and boil until done. When it is done the water that is in the pot is chicken broth.
So, I boiled a chicken yesterday and saved the meat for salads and the saved the broth too. But!..how many carbs is in the broth, if any? I didn't add anything else, just chicken and water.
I like to warm a cup of broth and then shred some chicken and put into for a snack, IF I am hungry before my eating time comes.
I would figure 0 carbs. but for me, it's better to be safe then sorry!
    How many do you think?

I would count 0, unless you added any spices.

Thanks for the reply!! The only thing I add when I get it out is salt (a must for homemade chicken broth for me) and pepper..I do know that pepper has some carbs according to the usda, but I don't put a whole bunch of that.

You should count the carbs in the pepper.

True, it's not going to amount to much over a whole pot of broth ... as long as you're aware that there are carbs in spices!

And ... this might be a good item to try not salting ... just a suggestion.

Okay! I will count the carbs in the pepper. Is it good not salted? I would think the salt is what brings the flavor out, but I have never had it unsalted, I will def try it!
          Thanks!!

You can always add salt at the table.

If you want to cut down on salt, not adding it when you're cooking is a good place to start.

Or only put 1/2 of what you usually put in ... cut down gradually.

It's awesome you made your own broth! We have to add about a carb per cup of bouillon because it does have a small amount of sugar in it. However, homemade broth is the best, best, BEST! No carbs but for the small amount spices will add, and so much better in nutritional value per ounce. Wise choice!

                And salt!

                Why not make your own?

well how many cups of soup did you make and how much pepper did you add? I added 1t to my 16 cups recipe for Shoney's cabbage soup and according to the USDA that added 0.09 net grams of carbs to each cup of my soup. since fitday don't go that low I'd say zero per cup for a cup of just chicken and water broth

I've used sea salt since my husband had triple bypass and other heart related problems since....I never add salt at the table, as a matter of fact the only salt "shaker" in the house is the sea salt grinder by the stove and it is used sparingly.

I do use some when I make soup. Check Linda's recipes for other wonderful soup recipes.....I love the Texas Chili, Cabbage Soup and others.

atkinsgal08- Thanks for replying!! I don't add salt to the whole I pot, I use it at the table when I get it out (and some with the pepper). I used to be very bad about putting a palm full of salt into the whole thing and then adding MORE when I go it to the table, lol. I am "easing" my way out of that habit now though.

Suzanne H- Thanks for the reply! I was going to get bouillon cubes but I couldn't find any that didn't have sugar in it, so I passed them up and just decided to make my own. The broth I made is very good and I am from the south where "Chicken N Dumplings" are a comfort food here, and when I add the chicken in the broth it reminds me so much of Chicken N Dumplings with out the biscuits in it.

2big4mysize- Thanks for replying!! I don't add the peeper while I am cooking it, I add about 1tsp to each cup that I get out. That is a good idea to add the pepper to the whole thing that way it will "spread out" and be less carbs all together. I just try to watch my spices and that's why I put the pepper in after I get the broth I want out.

imagood1- Thanks for replying! I have checked out Linda's site and when it comes to soups, I just love all of them, so it is hard to pick just a few. I will def be making that Texas Chili, sounds very good! I am so sorry to hear that about your husband! Sea salt is probably the best way to go when it comes to eating salt. I do need to start using that kind, I have some matter of fact, it is just in the back of the cabinet! I will be getting it out! Usually, if a soup has more than a few ingredients, it doesn't need salt, so I will def look into making one from Lindas site!

as a southern gal you can do chicken and dumplings using some of Cleochatra's cauliflower noodles shaped as dumplins if you can eat faux taters based cauliflower and not taste it as cauliflower.
