  • Can't seem to stay on track :-(

    Hi All,

To date the only diet that seems to work for me is Atkins but I find myself falling off it after about 3 weeks average. I am loosing weight, I feel better while on Atkins. What drives you to succeed? I need to loose 80 lbs, my clothes don't fit right, my cholesterol and blood pressure are high so I'm being treated for that. I try counting calories but always seem hungry so not sure that's for me.
I know it is only me that will make it happen, no magic pill. I would love to have 30 lbs off by April 1. Keep on trying I guess.

Thanks for allowing me to rant.

    Hey sticks!

What you need to do is to sit down and think about those times you've fallen off. Particularly was there any thing or things that helped you to fall off. For example, did you fall off because you went to a party or had a fight with your SO or got stressed at work, etc.

Try to figure out if what the trigger(s) were. Then make up strategies to cope with those triggers. So if you fell off because you went to a party: make up a plan to eat before you go to the party or eat only what is really appropriate for the diet during that party (and practice saying "No thanks.") If it was due to fight with your SO: resolve that instead of eating your depression/anger--walk or exercise it off. Same for work-place stress: take a walk during your coffee break or after work or on the weekend.

    Put YOU first.

I am sorry, but like you said there is no magic pill.

You either want it or you don't. If you don't want it enough, "you aren't gonna do it!" It is that simple.

      What drives me to succeed???

I am determined that it is now or never. I WILL continue this WOE, because I have discovered that I am a CARB ADDICT. And this is the only way to go if I want to get back control of my weight, and regain my life back. I have figured it out, and this is what I want, and I am going to do it, and follow Atkin's WOE as a way of life!

Good luck and hope you find what you need to stay on track.

What drives me to succeed is Type II Diabetes. I don't want it, I have a 50% chance of developing it within the next 7.5 years, and I'll be damned if I don't do everything in my power to prevent that from happening.

My kids drive me to succeed. They deserve a mom who can chase them and play with them and crouch on the floor with them and everything else an active parent can and should do.

My husband drives me to succeed. He deserves to have a wife who loves herself and who isn't so embarrassed by her own reflection in the mirror that it impacts their love life.

Ultimately, I drive myself to succeed. And success isn't a number on a scale. It's the way I wake up at the crack o' dawn, full of energy instead of zombie-like. Success is bending over without becoming light-headed (and bending over in general!). Success is wearing clothes I haven't worn comfortably in years - and looking nice in them. Success is exchanging obsessive/guilty behavior with food for loving to learn about and cook - and eat! - good, wholesome, natural food.

Make yourself an Atkins Emergency kit to use when you feel yourself ready to jump off plan

don't give yourself permission to stay off plan when you do get off plan practice carb harm intervention make the very next bite back on plan. soon you will notice their are fewer cheats and they are further and further apart until you have a whole string of cheat free days going.

Now while you are motivated write yourself a love letter about why you deserve to become the healtheir smaller person you want to become. Make copies and keep it close. the next time you are ready to throw in the towel reread it and then sit down and write a new letter to yourself about why you deserve whatever off plan food you are going to have more then you deserve to be that smaller healtheri person. if you finish the letter please come tell us about that food cause I know of nobody who has ever finished the second letter and I'd sure like to know what food it is and while you are telling me about it a billion of your ADBB buddies will be here trying to talk you down off the ledge too.

You have to learn to cope with the falling off. And that's about finding the motivation to get right back on. To me, the key is thinking Big Picture. If you got to a party and have, I dunno, a piece of cake, there's no denying that you've screwed up.

But here's the thing: you can go back to Atkins the next day and be maybe a week behind in reaching goal, or you can go back to your old way of eating and throw your goal away. You need to be smart about that choice and find the determination not to throw your goal away.

You also need to find ways to keep yourself motivated. I do best when I log my food because it makes me accountable for what I eat. Every once in a while I see something illegal in a store and think "do I really want to log that?" Plus my food log is linked in my ADBB signature and I would be mortified if anyone ever clicked that and saw a brownie in my food chart.

Public accountability works for me; something will work for you if you commit to trying the good tools at your disposal.

Re: Can't seem to stay on track :-(

Everyone responding here is responding in similar ways but we all mean the same thing.

There comes a time when, as overweight people, we look in a mirror, try on a piece of clothing, realize we ate the whole box of HoHo's, go to the doctor, hear the worry with family members, walk breathlessly up a flight of stairs or across a parking lot, are uncomfortable in our skin or whatever that moment is and just know the time is now.

For me, I avoid the slippery slopes. Sure, some people can have a "break" in their Atkins life and may even "plan a cheat", but I know that I may have many more cheats in me than I probably have recoveries (based on starting a diet every Monday for my entire life before Atkins!).

Everyone has their own moment and their own motivation to lose this excess baggage we carry along. Atkins give us the tool in this way of life. We have to examine our motives, the causes of our eating, the health of those around us. Following Atkins, we get the blueprint to change our eating. With others here on the board and those who are encouraging us in our life and through self examination, we can change the way our brains view food and how we medicate ourselves with it. The good news is, it can be changed.

                  You can do it!

have you tried moving to OWL after day 14?

are you getting into the PISS issues and not seeing the scale move on week 3 frustrating you? if so you need to know that is normal for all weight loss plans and even though that mean metal monster isn't validating the efforts you are making to shrink your body working your atkins you are still shedding body fat. use your tape measur eand you will see the inches being shed. then your body for complicated biochem reasons will pee off the fluids it was holding and the scales will catch up to your inches and happy scale daning will occur again.

Thank you all for your great support. I have started induction again today (getting pretty good at starting anyway) My wife decided to join me this time so this may be helpful. To me Atkins is the only diet that I can really see results, I have to remember this time that when I loose 20 lbs that it's not OK to stop eating this way. I can't let the bad carbs back in because I know the consequences.
