  • Need tips for Traveling

I have a ton of traveling coming up.
Got any tips? Especially like snacks I can bring around like on the plane.
Things to look out to order if I'm out.
Things to buy at the store while I"m out if I happen to hit a grocery store or drugstore?

Stuff I can buy that won't go bad that I can take a long with me?

    Anything would be great.

It really depends what Phase of Atkins you are on.

So be sure to bring along the Foods List for your Phase. And eat off that. And read labels, including the ingredients.

buy a soft sided lunch size cooler. you can take it on the plane with you. go to the deli and get a safe ham product for you and have it sliced thick. then freeze it and you can use it in your cooler as the ice since ice cubes nor chill packs are allowed through security. now you can take any solid food you normally eat as your on plan foods, veggies pre cut no dressings allowed though, nuts hard cheese, a nonliquid meal, muffins whatever you normally eat.

if you are checking bags you can do canned meats pouches of mayo and mustard and salad dressings along with utensles like knife and can opener. also disposible bowls and plates for eating off or or mixing up in.

when you are hitting the store if you have your cooler you casn get anything you normally get and use the hotel icemeachine to keep the cooler cool. Mnay hotels have frigs in the rooms for a slightly higher price so check them when you make your resevations.

also check the type of coffee machine and if you got a microwave or not. the new single serve coffee machines can't cook like the pot size ones do.

        How long are your flights?

Did you read Chapter 19 in DANDR 2002?

Sauces have mysterious ingredients and it's best to avoid them.

        Salad dressings are tricky, too.

Avoid anything that might have bread crumbs or flour added... like meatballs.

You might hit the web site of the airport(s) you expect to spend time in - some of them have restaurants at which you can have Atkins-friendly meals (and online menus so you can plan ahead exactly).

I used to fly in and out of Las Vegas a lot with work, and even though it wasn't the best choice in the world, I knew there was a Burger King in the terminal and I got a "low carb" version of a Whopper there when I had no other viable options (BK is relatively easy to make low carb friendly; they're used to customization where other chains will screw up a special order no matter what).

I was on OWL rung 6 at that time, so I usually had a bag or three of dry-roasted edamame with me (it was a LIFESAVER) as well.

Another thing I've always toted with me is a pre-cut measured baggie of green cabbage - cabbage worked great as a carry-on snack because it doesn't have to be kept cool and stays good a very long time in a sealed baggie.

I would really check with the airline first to see what is allowed for you to even have on the plane. Since the terrorist attack at Christmas, the list of things allowed and not allowed has changed drastically and severely restricted. i.e you cannot get up 1 hour prior to landing anymore, even for a bathroom break etc.

thanks so much for all the replies!
              Hmmm cabbage - just plain?
I'm thinking to just try to do meat most of the time. i'm high up in the rungs as I only have like 5lbs left to lose.
I think I can meet my goal soon so I want to stay on track. I just know it will be difficult. I was thinking that if in a tough bind to just eat the hamburger meat in a hamburger. This shoudl be safe right? is it ok topped with cheese and bacon?

I don't trust salads at all.
I was thinking it may be easier to low calorie it but i'm gonna try not to. But question on low calorie - if let's say you stay around 1200 and just trying to maintain - wud that be possible to just do low calorie for 3 days while traveling and not try to gain knowing I can't lose with this - and then go back to atkins?

Better to eat it with some fat to avoid any 'blood sugar spikes'

which OWL rung have you reached? not being on induction will vastly expand the snack/food possibilities for you. (BTW your profile info reads '14-day induction which is why most replies you have had so far deal with induction-style suggestions )

As lowcalorie diets are so different to lowcarb ones it might mess you up completely! Better to eat as you have been doing - if you are fairly high on OWL you could even eat small portions of starchy veggies and whole grains (assuming you have tested them out and stay within your CCLL), which should be easy to stick to.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

If you're high up in the rungs with 5 pounds left to lose, then you should hve no problem eating at airports, hotels or restaurants.

Just eat your OWL/Pre-Maintenance menu and you'll be fine. I've had to go to seminars and stay at hotels during my OWL and Pre-Maintenance and it was alot easier than when I was in Induction and eaerly OWL.

I'm in Pre-Maintenance. At the last seminar I attended (they supplied breakfast, lunch and dinner), I had the hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, berries and cream cheese for breakfast. For lunch, they served salad and sandwiches, etc. I ate the legal things like the hummus, chickpea salad, the regular salad, the roast beef (from the sandwiches), etc. For supper, I ate the baked chicken/pork chops, the sauteed veggie and the fruit.

So just eat what you have been eating on the higher rungs. You'll do fine.

I can get individually packaged cheese at my grocery - I find these really handy. Also, if at the appropriate rung, nuts travel really easily. Consider bringing your own salad dressing - then salads anywhere are pretty safe

again thanks for all the replies.
                      I changed my profile.
So I have been doing any carbs such as whole grains or oatmeal only in the mornings is that a good strategy?

How do some of you guys go to out to eat and pay lots of money but like not eat what you truly want? Do any of you like go let's say to a buffet and then allow yourself one dessert?

Also cabbage with fat - what kind of fat? thanks again!

For eating hot as a side dish I usually boil (or microwave) it till slightly softened then drain it and put it in a frying pan with butter to finish off. Some people use bacon fat instead, and even cook it with chunks of bacon to add more taste.

For a portable snack, just slice raw cabbage and have some form of fullfat dressing to dip it in.

doesn't small packages of cheese or like string cheese go bad if it's not stored cold?

Depends how long you keep it out of the fridge.

Will you have a fridge where you go?

You should be OK for a few days out of the fridge if it is unopened. It won't taste quite the same but will not go off.
