  • Fat Fast?

    Hi everyone!

I had a couple of questions that I was hoping some of you may be able to answer. The first is, does anyone experience a really bad taste at the back of your mouth when swallowing ANY food or water?

My second question is, is anyone familiar with the Fat Fast? If so, what is the food list for it?

I have the Atkins Ebook and I cannot find these answers anywhere. I would really appreciate any info. that anyone can offer. Thank you very much!

    Re: Fat Fast?

Go buy Atkins 2002 book. Why are you wanting information on the fat fast? It isn't healthy and is for people who are seriously metabolically resistant.

      Re: Fat Fast?

Thank you. I am asking because I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure last year. I was told that it was caused by a virus in my heart. Since starting the meds, I have gained a lot of weight. I was also told by my cardiologist that I have Metabolic Disorder. It often goes hand in hand with heart disease. I have a very difficult time losing weight, and I thought that it may help me out. I was wanting the diet so I could run it by my cardiologist and see what he thinks and if he thinks that it would help me.

I posted that article but had second thoughts. Fat fast is such a dangerous proposition. I mean I used to hear about people using barbituates and shakes alone and goodness-knows-what to lose weight RIGHT NOW and every time the weight comes back on, brings more weight with it, and general health decreases. Sorry for the edit, but just didn't set right posting that.

          >>I was wanting the diet so I could run it by my cardiologist and see what he thinks and if he thinks that it would help me.>>

Buy the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) and show THAT to your cardiologist.

No one, and I mean NO ONE should do the Fat Fast without the immediate supervision of their physician.

The Fat Fast is actually dangerous for those that are not metabolically resistant. You also run the risk of further damage to your metabolism.

If you can lose weight, you are NOT a candidate for the Fat Fast.

Losing slowly isn't a good enough reason.

Why risk your health for the Fat Fast?

Most people will, once they go back to Induction, put back the weight they may have lost. You also run the risk of losing lean muscle mass.

Also know that the Fat Fast is no longer supported by Atkins Nutritionals.

            Re: Fat Fast?

Thank you everyone. I would never do this part of the (old) program without consulting my Dr. or Cardiologist. I would NEVER and I do mean NEVER do anything that would compromise my heart health. I have been through **** and back in the past year dealing with heart failure. ( I am only 38 yrs. old, and was in good health and shape before this diagnosis. I was only curious as to how this may or may not work with having Metabolic Syndrome. Thank you for your help.

              Re: Fat Fast?

If you are losing weight/inches and you know you're doing things right for sure (make sure to have your menu reviewed here often for advice), then you shouldn't need the Fat Fast. I would recommend that you read the section of the book that deals with it. Not familiar with the Ebook version but I know there's a section in the physical book and it's only recommended for a short time when nothing else is working.

I have a combination of health issues that make weight loss slow and difficult, and metabolic syndrome and Atkins has worked for me when nothing else has. But I have to be very strict on what I eat, i.e. avoiding trigger/staller foods, keeping net carbs low, fat at 60-65%, protein about 30%, drinking lots of water, avoiding nitrates and other hidden fillers. Weight loss is not speedy at times (sometimes 2-3 lbs a month, if that) but it is working.

I would use the board here for support and advice and see how things work for you. This site has saved me from giving up so many times.

And as others have said, check with your doctor. Not sure about the swallowing thing, I've never heard about that with Atkins but could be something else going on that perhaps you should ask your doctor about.

              Good luck!

                  Re: Fat Fast?

JJ, I am so glad that your following doctors orders. Fat Fast is just that, eating fat. It is for folks who loss very little during induction and stalled out for over a month. I have seen folks on this who have tried it and lasted about 2 days. Its awful. So before you even think about it, figure out how much you lost, and don't go by the scales alone. Many of us, while not losing scale weight, are losing inches and that counts also. The tight jeans test is one of the best.
Bad taste. LOL Welcome to induction. Wait til folks start to move back when you talk because of bad breath. LOL

I can't tell you how those with Metabolic Syndrome react to the Fat Fast, but simply reducing carbohydrates (without doing the Fat Fast) will help.

If you want to read more, this is a review paper by Jeff Volek and Richard Feinman:

As Desertthorn wrote, the "bad taste" is a physical sign of ketosis. It is caused by ketones being excreted in the saliva.

The taste will disappear after a while. For the moment, drinking more plain water should help with it. Also make sure you are eating all your veggies.

                    I have the Atkins Ebook
The e-book is probably not complete. It would be better to have the printed book.

If you need a copy of the book, I was at Goodwill last week and they had 2 on the shelves, one was a hardback addition which I didn't even know they made. Ebay also might have one for cheap if you don't have to pay shipping costs.

                          Hi Georgiana,
Thank you SO much for that link! That was very interesting. Its great to know I picked the right diet (lifestyle change) plan. I was at the Cardiologist this morning, and he did not like the Fat Fast plan. He had actually heard of it and said that the fat content was entirely too high. He was very much in favor of the way I have been doing the Atkins with eating clean food only. Thanks again for the link. Have a great day!

                            Brightstar7801,
Thank you for your tip on the softback Atkins book. I just wanted to let you know that having Metabolic Syndrome which was preceded by Congestive Heart Failure is a HORRIBLE diagnosis to get, and you should be grateful that you do not have it. Its especially hard when you have two young children and a husband that depend on you. When I received the diagnosis, I did feel like "barfing". It was the worst day of my life. Normally I am not offended easily, however; when someone is trying to deal with a life threatening diagnosis, you do not want to hear someone say:
" I'm so glad I am not ____________, because I read what that was and wanted to barf." I by no means am trying to jump down your throat, I just wanted you to have a little idea about how a comment like that is hard to hear when you have an illness or a disease. Thank you for understanding

                            Jenny
