Thank you for your tip on the softback Atkins book. I just wanted to let you know that having Metabolic Syndrome which was preceded by Congestive Heart Failure is a HORRIBLE diagnosis to get, and you should be grateful that you do not have it. Its especially hard when you have two young children and a husband that depend on you. When I received the diagnosis, I did feel like "barfing". It was the worst day of my life. Normally I am not offended easily, however; when someone is trying to deal with a life threatening diagnosis, you do not want to hear someone say:
" I'm so glad I am not ____________, because I read what that was and wanted to barf." I by no means am trying to jump down your throat, I just wanted you to have a little idea about how a comment like that is hard to hear when you have an illness or a disease. Thank you for understanding

Understood. And I understand how it feels when people say innocent comments and they come off as insensitive. I have condition called POF which makes my chances of having my own biological child just about impossible, so reading about your two children would make me wince even though you don't mean it. I'm sorry.

I should have said the actual eating of the fat is what makes my stomach turn not the metabolic syndrome.

Does you cardiologist have a cardiac rehab program you are exercising with?

also are you on fluid restrictions for you CHF? if so ignore all the drink more water advice you will be getting as you post on the board any other issues question you have.

if you are on coumadin for your heart condition be careful with your atkins green veggies.

did you know Dr Atkins was a cardiologist?

          Re: Fat Fast?

          Hi2big4mysize,

I have been working with a trainer (per cardiologist) for about a year and a half. I have gradually moved up to the exercise program that I am doing now which is walking at a brisk pace for one minute and jogging (very small steps) for 30 sec., for a total workout of 45-50 min. It feels great and so far my heart has been reacting great!

I did take Lasix for one year, and recently the Dr. has changed the order to an as needed basis. I am happy to say that since starting Atkins, I have not had to take any Lasix! Thank goodness. I still don't drink quite as much water as all of the people that post speak of though. I retain water very easily and was told to keep it at around 40 oz. a day. I am not on Coumadin. I didn't know that Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist until my cardiologist told me this morning! That was very reassuring to me for some reason! I know that doing this program is exactly what I need, I just get frustrated with what I consider a pretty slow weight loss for induction. My Dr. seems to think I will do just fine on it as long as I eat clean. (No lunchmeat, salami, more fish and chicken than red meat, etc.) Thank you for your information! Do you have heart problems also? I only ask because you seem very informed on CHF. It is really nice to talk to someone who is familiar with CHF and the restrictions. Have a great evening!

            Re: Fat Fast?

I volunteered with a Cardiac rehab program at our local hospital and learned tons from the lectures they gave the patients and reading the recommeneded lit.

I'm guessing your injection fractions are on the high end for CHF if you can do 45-50 min of HIIT workouts.
Did your doc tell you Dr Atkins had a virus heart conditon too that caused his heart to stop back in the 90s? He got so much better he could play tennis again.
You need to look at the big picture of weight loss over the long run each day eating low carb you are getting healtheir then if you weren't and when you go in for your 2yr echo check up you should be smaller then you are today.

              >>I didn't know that Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist until my cardiologist told me this morning!>>

Dr. Atkins talks about his practice in the book.

              >>I retain water very easily>>

Many people find that drinking more water causes them to NOT retain water.

However, I'm not giving you medical advice ... just an observation.

folk with CHF have medically restricted fluid amounts. most only can have 4 cups a day and that includes all liquid foods too like soup coffee even icecream. I always felt bad drinking water infront of them when they were working out.

As I stated, I wasn't giving medical advice.

                        2big4mysize,

Wow! I bet you did learn quite a bit! I am still learning new things daily! My Ejection fraction is now 65%. I am VERY VERY proud of that percentage! When I was first diagnosed, my ejection fraction was only 22%. The Dr. gave me two to five years to live. Thanks to God, regular exercise, and many supplements my Ejection Fraction number is considered normal. My heart is still enlarged, but working like a champ! When I skip exercise, don't get enough sleep, etc. I can definitely feel it, but as long as I am a good patient...I feel fantastic. You are right, I do need to look at the big picture. Just today the Doc was saying to lose one pound, then lose another and then another. That was a great way to put it. I go for my next echo in Sept. I can't wait to see it! What interesting info. on Dr. Atkins. I had no idea that he had been through all of that with his heart! Very inspiring! Thank you again for all of your info. It is a pleasure to chat with you!

                          Atkinsgal08,

I have the Ebook of Atkins. Apparently, it is quite different from the regular version. I will be purchasing that book. In the Ebook, I did not notice that it ever mentioned him being a cardiologist.

My water intake needs to be different than those without a heart condition. For a "normal" person, more water helps you not to retain, however; with certain heart conditions, that rule does not apply. Due to certain meds. and the function of a damaged heart, I am only allowed very little water.

Thank you for your post! I love hearing from everyone.

                            It's in Chapter 27:

"My first forays into weight control began nearly forty years ago when I was a young cardiologist with a rapidly escalating weight problem and a strong desire to find a hunger-free way to deal with it."
