Re: so i went to the doctors today and....

My cholesterol tends to be high no matter how I eat- but I refuse to take meds for it. Just me being stubborn!! I wish I had links to the studies showing the hype over high cholesterol and the fact that it isn't related to heart attacks/strokes, etc. Cholesterol that is too low leads to more incidences of cancer and some other diseases I can't think of right now. With some people, they may see a temporary increase in their cholesterol numbers initially, but see it go down after a few months. The fact is that the cholesterol we eat has little to do with serum cholesterol.

Before Atkins at one point (they took my blood for another reason and it was not a fasting test) it was 312-that was in 2000. Another non-fasting test was in 2004 and it was 240-something. I didn't get the breakdown on individual numbers. Frankly, I don't worry about my cholesterol. I'm more worried about diabetes if I don't continue Atkins as a WOL and things like hydrogenated fat, high fructose corn syrup and other refined junk. When the doc jumped me about my 240 cholesterol level, I first pointed out that my blood was taken after a high fat meal, and when she all but demanded that I begin taking cholesterol meds, I laughed. I'm sorry, but I will not take them! I know so many people with horrible side effects and until I know DEFINITIVELY that higher cholesterol will make me drop dead of a heart attack, I'm not going to worry. The more medications that come from the pharmawh*res, the lower they make it so that your cholesterol is "high." It makes me so mad. Pharmaceutical companies making money and the AHA still towing the low fat party line. Sorry for the rant, but I'm pretty passionate about it! lol

Please define "super high". Also, without your breakdown of HDL, LDL, VLDL, and triglicerides, the number doesn't mean much.

Ziggy gives a great breakdown of what happens with your cholestrol in this post: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...bad-press.html

did you doc rule out all other medical causes for high cholesterol before she prescribed lipator? thinks like low thyroid hormones or hitting menopause?

and did you get a fullpanel so you know if your LDL is high if it is the dangerous VLDL or the fluffy nonharmful stuff?

Rayley, get your numbers and learn all about them, ask lots of questions.

I think I remember Dr A saying that it took about 6 months to get your cholesterol down. Am I dreaming again?

From Chapter 12 of DANDR 2002:

                        Too Soon for New Tests

If you got your first round of blood-lipid and other tests done before you started Atkins, you may be chomping at the bit to have them redone to confirm your good results-and dispel any lingering concerns you have. I wholeheartedly agree that you should have new tests done, but not yet. Two weeks is too early to show significant changes; instead, wait at least six weeks. By then you'll have chemical confirmation of the wisdom you showed in deciding to do Atkins.

Your serum cholesteral is 25% diet, 75% genetics. eating refined carbs is what makes the triglycerides go up, and there is some evidence that it prompts the liver to make more cholesterol (the bad kind, LDL), too.

My mom has eaten rabbit food her whole life, and her levels are high, even with meds. Some people's "normal" is just different. At 252, you do want to bring it down, but statin drugs only work for some people. They give me a terrible stomach ache, so I didn't take them when they wanted me to, either.

Try 2000 mg of fish oil, once a day. I did that and my levels dropped from 209 to 187 in 2 months. Don't spread the dose out--apparantly, it works better all at once.
