I'm not a doctor and I didn't stay at a holiday inn express last night, but wow! Your HDL is great! Your HDL/LDL ratio is 3.7, which falls into a very healthy range. 3.3 to 4.4 is considered low risk for heart problems. Give this WOE some time and I bet your numbers get better. Since I'm not a doctor, I would be foolish to tell you that your LDL and total cholesterol are fine.

        Re: Here are my results.

I wouldn't presume to tell you what to do, but I thought I'd share my experience with Atkins and the impact on three of my health indicators.

When I began Atkins, I was diabetic (insulin and oral agents) and had high cholesterol (cholesterol medications) and hypertensive (three medications). I'd lost weight before and gained it back, lost it again, gained it back. I used Weight Watchers, Diet Workshop, Slim Fast with Lean Cusines, Cambridge Diet among others.

Once I began Atkins, I felt better, but my health indicators were slower to follow suit. At one year, my HmgA1C (diabetic indicator) had dropped significantly enough to begin decreasing insulin. My cholesterol didn't change. My hypertension improved enough to eliminate one oral medication at the doctor's suggestion.

I began eating less beef and more chicken and fish (along with occasional beef and pork). With that change and as I increased my vegetables moving up on the rungs of OWL, my cholesterol indicators improved. After six years, I'm on maintenance, now, and I am cautious about recognizing how my body reacts to certain foods. In December of this past year, I had a physical. I no longer take any insulin or oral agents for diabetes (HmgA1C was 5.9), I continue one pill for cholesterol (due to family history) but my total cholesterol, HDL and LDL were perfectly normal and I no longer take any hypertensive medications or fluid reduction pills.

This all happened over some time and working closely with my doctor. Clearly I had much more weight to lose and was quite a bit older than you. I didn't ignore the doctor. We only agreed to continue a cautious watch of my numbers along the way. And for me, it paid off giving me the results I had hoped for.

I attribute that success to my Atkins plan, tweaking my plan to eat leaner cuts of meat and more veggies, exercise and vigilant follow up with my physician who clearly understood that Atkins was working in many ways to improve my health.

Individuals have to work with their physicians and be clear about what they are eating. I shared food diaries with the doctor along the way and while he started as no real fan of Atkins, he now realizes that it can be done safely with monitoring.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

O.k. I didn't read all of your first thread because I had to go to work. But did you have your blood work readings before you started Atkins. If you didn't I don't think it's fair that your Dr. blames Atkins right away.

no i did not, i had bloodwork done for like thyroid and stuff but not choloestrol, and thats the thing, she jumped right to the atkins diet and blamed it for my high cholostrol, and i know both sides of my family have high cholestrol, and that was the first time iv ever had my cholostrol checked, so i can almost guarentee its genetics and NOT atkins, but thats just what i think.

this is the average almost useless test that you got

they don't even tell you how much of the LDL is the large healthy fluffy LDL

and look your HDL is great your Trigcyrids are great and your LDL is great because your doing atkins and its the large healthy fluffy kind of LDL

and look your HDL is 68!! so even worst case sanario that your LDL is not all the healthy kind your still protected because you got more HDL that recycle's your LDL but trust me alot of your LDL is the large healthy fluffy kind

so in short your cholesterol is great and your doctor is wrong

if its possible for you to get a full cholestoral test done one that shows all the different types and sizes of LDL then even your doctor will be forced to admit you have great cholestoral

it's not genetics i don't believe in genetics

and the Atkins diet has made your cholestoral better im positive that alot of that LDL is the large healthy fluffly kind that has no health risk at all

you need LDL to live with out it you would die and your HDL recycles your LDL and the large healthy fluffy kind of LDL has no health risk

this is why the cholestoral test your doctor gave you is useless

a full test that shows all sizes and types of LDL and such is the only way to show that doctor you got great cholestoral

Like others here, I am not a physician nor a dietician, but I know that the way 2002 Atkins is lined out it's very, very healthy. Your status says you're on extended induction, and signature says you're within 20 lbs of goal... which is AWESOME!

I would suggest you start exploring OWL to get a more balanced diet. I know OWL can be scary because many of us go through a stall as our bodies adjust to the added carbs. I know when I add my foods to FitDay and look at the numbers I tend to have full and balanced nutrition. I haven't had blood work done, but I put good money on it that I'm fine. Can't go wrong with good balanced nutrition. It's truly the healthiest diet I've ever been on and able to stick to without feeling deprived.

Rayley, I feel for you. It is just sickening how off-track the majority of doctors are when it comes to the lowfat dogma. Most of them don't understand Atkins, but are very quick to blame it for everything. I am so very blessed to have a doc who is 100% pro-Atkins. It really makes life a lot eaiser.

I WISH I had your HDL. 68! Awesome. I noticed that there is a limit listed in the range for HDL... your results had the range listed as 30-64. When I saw that, I thought WTH? A limit on HDL? That can't be right. So I whipped out the results of my last annual bloodwork, and it had a range as well, although it is listed as a range of 40-59. This is news to me... I never noticed that before. I thought that the higher your HDL is, the better. Why have a maximum number on it?

Also - my doc says genetics plays a HUGE role in cholesterol. Major.

As the others have indicated, you definitely need to follow doctor's instuctions, as we are not medical experts. But I just wanted you to know that there are doctors out there who are not misguided about Atkins and cholesterol. The trick is in finding one.

In case it may ease your mind, I'm including my last 3 years' results to show that one can indeed do Atkins, and not have their cholesterol go through the roof:

Here's the last 3 years' lipid panels:

                    Lipid Panel.........................2009.............200 8..................2007

                    Cholesterol, Total................128...............122........ ............115
                    Triglycerides.........................47.......... ......48......................49
                    HDL Cholesterol....................52................. 48......................43
                    VLDL Cholesterol....................9.................1 0......................10
                    LDL Cholesterol....................64................. 64......................62

My total cholesterol has gone up, but my HDL has gone up.

I, too, bet that if tests for cholesterol had been done prior to your starting Atkins, it would show that it had gone down since then. I'm thinking that your results will be even better the next time you are tested. I wish you the best!

ziggy has a point....the better cholesterol test is something called an NMR Lipoprofile. It measures the cholesterol particles. So you might want to get that test in future.

I'm confused. are those the pre lipator numbers or the post lipator numbers? if they are pre taking the meds then yep I agree with you but if those are the post aking lip numbers they can be the way they are because of your lipator.

your ratiois are great and it is okay to have your HDL too high cause that is the only way to remove the LDL from the blood stream.

cutting cornsyrup from your diet when you started atkins will help lower your LDL VLDLs cause the human body metabolizes fructose to new fats in the liver. eating atkins is lowering the triglycerides cause you are now fracturing them for energy making and HDL goes up from the mandatory atkins exercise so it is a win win situation.

I have a talk with my doc every time my cholesterol gets checked and he is looking at the test results and it goes like this.

Doc your cholesterol is too high! we need to make some changes.
Me really? what is my HDL?
Doc 102 ( that was the last test it has been as high as 106 on Atkins)
Me so what is my ratio?
Him its .. never mind keep doing what you are doing.
                          Me

we have had this discussion since my Jan 2004 results.

My May 2002 results went like this
your LDL is too high your HDL is too low, your triglycerides are too high and your cholesterol is too high. we need to make changes.

Me okay guess I'll go on a diet and start exercising.

My Dec 2002 discussion went like this
DOc your triglycerides are much better, but your LDL is still too high and your HDL is still too low ( he wanted it over 45 and it was just 43).
Me I want to add weight lifting now.

Doc exercise will increase your HDL so we will recheck next time. Oh and lower your saturated fats in your atkins eating.

my blood for the 2004 dicsussion was based on the 2003 dec blood drawing and my HDL has been over 100 each time, my triglycerides ahve been in the 40s, my VLDL have been in the teens even though my LDL is still over 130 which means I'm making big fluffy LDL and not much dangerous stuff.
