  • Tips For Business Travelers?

Just started Atkins for 1st time.

Biggest challenge is I travel 2+ weeks per month and spend much time entertaining (i.e. big fancy dinners) customers.

The toughest part is breakfast. Hotel restaurants, especially internationally, have very few low carb choices.

Anybody have any tips or insights in dealing with this breakfast challenge? Any good breakfast foods that you can take with you on a trip?

    Thanks

    Hi!

Make sure you bring a copy of the Induction Acceptable Foods List and the Induction Rules with you when you travel/eat at restaurant/etc. This will reduce the number of inadvertent mistakes (like you could have sworn food X was okay, and then you find it wasn't.)

You might want to invest in a small, soft-body insulated lunch bag (check the school supply section of most stores), this will enable you to store some perishables like fresh veggies, some cold-cuts, etc. provided you have ice (or a frozen plastic bottle of water!) to keep things cool. Here in the NorthEastern US, it's been cold enough that you can use your car trunk as a refrigerator!

For breakfast, see if your hotel will send up, eggs, bacon, etc. to you. Or even hard boiled eggs. If not, look around for restaurants that serve breakfast. If you have a microwave in your hotel room or if you can bring an electric pot (hot pot) for boiling water, you can buy a dozen raw eggs and boil them for breakfast/snacks. During a work-related symposium I attended a couple of years ago, the hotel was a block away from the city's "Little Italy"----so I purchased cheese and proscuitto there.

Canned goods are also an option.

Just a note...if you purchase fresh vegetables, do not purchase the ones that are already cut up. Buy the whole veggie and prepare it when you get to your hotel room. Whole veggies store longer in room temperature than if they are sliced, diced or chopped.

And of course, bring utensils with which to eat/prepare your food.

the last time I travelled internationally was before 2001, so I know the rules of what you can and cannot bring have changed. Therefore, other ADBB members will have better suggestions than I.

I just watched the Faulty Towers skin "The Waldorf Salad" the other day.
Anyways my point is: Do not afraid to ask the placed you visit and the restaurants to accomodate your needs - They very likely will do that.
On restaurants go for the grilled items and have salads with dressings on the sides.

I would also do a few emergency canned stuff in my suitcase.

I know - hotel breakfasts are typically carb fests.

I second much of the advice given; I think if you ask, you can at least get eggs the way you like.

I'm always SOL on that because I don't like eggs and there are LITERALLY no other choices at many hotel breakfasts, so I ended up getting up early and going for breakfast as a local restaurant that could accommodate me, OR, I had some non-perishable Atkins foods in my luggage that would suffice for breakfast.

It's a tough thing to manage, though - good luck to you!
