  • A couple questions?!

Hi, I am currently on the induction phase and its going great. I am almost done my first week and lost almost 10 pounds. I just have a couple questions, I am sure someone has posted answers to these questions but I couldn't find them.

1- Should I count calories? I eat three decent size meals per day and some days I am around 1500 calories and other days I am close to 3000, should I watch my calorie consumption? (Always around 20 net carbs)

2- Another thing is that I have never seen chicken that contains fiber, but today in my local grocery story I bought chicken wings from a restaurant that distributes their food to grocery stores and per 3 chicken wings, it has 1 carb and 4 grams of fiber..Is there some catch or is this for real? Could it be the manufacturer made a mistake? (It does say that the chickens were fed vegetables or something like that on the packaging)

Any insight on these questions would be great, Thanks!!!

Chicken doesn't have fiber. However, if they put some sort of flour-based dusting on it, there might be fiber. Was it breaded?

      >>Should I count calories?>>

      Generally not.

You might aim for a more consistent pattern though ... it's less confusing to your body.

A 1500 swing in calories from one day to the next might just be confusing!

Which number is closer to 10-12 times your current body weight?

There is some sort of seasoning or spices on the chicken but its not breaded.
I weight about 250 so I guess 2500 calories is what I should follow?

          Seems reasonable.

Do you know what the "some sort" is? Do you know there's not sugar?

The Ingredients are: Chicken, Salt, Paprika, Spice, Onion Powder, Spice Extractives, Corn Starch, Sodium, Aluminosilicate, Garlic Powder.

1g of sugar, 4g of fiber & 1g of carbs

The corn starch would be a deal breaker for me.

Also the salt ... I prefer to add my own.

Wonder what they mean by "spice"? Sometimes that another word for "sugar".

I wonder where 4 grams of fiber is coming from?

I would buy plain chicken and season it myself!

The carbs are probably net carbs, like on European labels... though it's only a guess.

                Corn Starch
Dr. Atkins wrote that we should stay away from cornstarch.

                  Re: A couple questions?!

First, congratulations on your weight loss! I didn't count calories on induction, though I do now... but not carefully. I do count my carbs carefully. I find that some foods that are low in carbs and super high in calories probably aren't very good for me. My goal is to learn life-long healthy dietary changes. 2500 calories at 250 lbs is excellent. The longer you stay on this WOE the less you will want to eat.

As to the chicken wings, I would definitely avoid anything with corn starch. I know a local wing restaurant here in Tulsa cooks their wings like I do at home... fresh wings split in two with the tip removed, fried in oil, sauced afterward. I prefer to make mine at home, but occasionally I'll go pick up an order of wings. I used to order a pizza on nights like that... today I go for the wings hehe

For me it all comes down to this... what I'm eating and drinking today... is it working to help me meet my goals? If it's not, then I need to change it.

Finally, keep in mind that manufacturers, restauranteurs, grocers and the like can put about anything they want on a label to sell their products. Yes, they LIE!
