  • Need some Non-Atkins suggestions!

    Hey there guys, I need some help! I decided to quit smoking this week after being a pack a day smoker for a decade. Yeah I know its a great choice I'll be healthier blah blah blah. As you can tell I am a wee bit grumpy, I am using the patch which does help with the needing of the cigs but.......... I swear I at night I just want to eat everything I see. I haven't cheated, I just am eating to much of legal foods. I am at a loss as to what to do with this new found free time. And let me tell you it is not a free time I am enjoying. I have no issues with drinking more than enough water, I tried some sugar-free gum (2 pieces a day max split up if need be into 4 halves to stretch it but I feel like that may be causing me additional cravings plus I don't want to replace smoking with any kind of food habit), crossword puzzles, reading, and on and on. I am a regular exerciser as well and have actually ordered a more intense workout dvd since I will be able to breath a bit easier, but it hasn't come yet. I don't know, I know I am rambling, I need help! My hubby quit with me and he's all tra la la la and having a great time of it, I guess I didn't realize how big a part of my life smoking had become. Any suggestions as to what to do when I would normally smoke instead of stuffing my face would be greatly appreciated! To date I have lost 64 lbs and the last thing I want to do is trade in smoking for a habit of filling my face! I guess I never thought it would actually be this friggin hard to quit, boy was I wrong! Anyway thank you all in advance for listening to me ramble and rant, ya'll are the best!

    I quit smoking years ago after 30 years of smoking. I did count and cross stitch as I needed to count all the time. Sudoko is the most addictive game that I have ever played

    You can do it.

      One suggestion would be find some addictive flash games that require you staying on the mouse. As a smoker I have found myself wanting one but stuck in a game where I keep telling myself one more round for the next hour.

        I feel like a bit of a heel offering quitting smoking advice since I haven't done it successfully (I've quit lots of times, just not long term).

        I find I need to keep my hands busy...not sure if you are into knitting/crochet or crafts, but I'd suggest something that keeps your hands busy and is (nearly) impossible to do while smoking. (Ever try smoking & knitting? not a good combo). Also, I always felt like I wanted something in my mouth. I used to use gum too, just wondering (in an Atkins-friendly kind of way) if sipping water would help with that...maybe thru a straw?

          Thanks for the suggestions guys, I literally would smack someone right now for a smoke I hate this. I know smoking is bad for you and all but geeeeez, I really have to figure out another way to deal with stress. I tried crocheting once a long time ago and just couldn't seem to pick it up. I wish my Mom was still alive, she was an awesome crocheter and I know she could teach me if I really wanted to learn. Good grief this is awful, I am sitting here crying now for no apparent reason other than I really want a cigarette, how sad is that. I'd rather give up sugar & bread and all the other crap I have given up a thousand times over, than I would feel like this all over a stupid friggin smoke. And food actually tastes good unlike a cig.......I need a stronger patch Maybe I'll try making jewelry, I used to do that when I was in middle school, using tiny beads, it was fun and time consuming as I recall, need to go to Wal-Mart and get some clasps, and the thread, at least I know I have beads already Ok I am rambling again, typing helps, its always been hard to smoke and type, maybe I'll type a book Thanks for listening

            Re: Need some Non-Atkins suggestions!

            Congrats on quitting.

            I am afraid I can't offer any help though as far as what to do instead of smoking. I quit 9 years ago, had a 2 pack a day habit (30 years of smoking)

            I quit cold turkey, and now I wonder how much time I wasted every day smoking. I guess I get so much more accomplished now because I am not standing out in the garage every 15 minutes having a smoke---Never Smoked in out new home.

            And I never felt I had to do something to keep busy instead of smoking. It took about two weeks to not want a smoke, but I just dealt with it because I knew I was quitting, and that was it!

            You can also go on the Interwebs and google quitting smoking/keeping busy and you will probably find hundreds of sites to help....Here's an article here that I copied and pasted for you.

            How to Keep Your Hands Busy When You Quit Smoking

            One reason people may have a difficult time quitting, is because their hands are used to being busy holding a cigarette and smoking. So if you are wondering how to keep your hands busy, there are a lot of ways that will keep your hands busy.
            You can think of many things as well, but here is my list:
            * Chew on a plastic straw.
            * Squeeze a stress ball.
            * Keep a note pad handy and when the urge to smoke arises, keep your hands busy writing down the reasons you're quitting.
            * Play a musical instrument.
            * Chew gum.
            * Eat a popsicle.
            * Put on makeup.
            * Fix your hair.
            * Clean your glasses.
            * Wash your car.
            * Mow the lawn.
            * Knit.
            * Crochet.
            * Play fetch with your dog.
            * Cook.
            * Get on the computer and type, type, type.
            * Lift hand weights.
            * Get on an elliptical trainer.
            * Go fishing.
            * Play basketball.
            * Sew.
            * Read (turning pages).
            * Sweep.
            * Mop.
            * Rake the lawn.
            * Pull weeds.
            * Plant a garden.
            * Brush your dog.
            * Bathe your dog.
            * Clean the liter box.
            * Iron.
            * Clean the fridge.
            * Dust.
            * Vacuum.
            * Ride a bike.
            * Play ping pong.
            * Play cards.
            * Paint.
            * Clean the windows.
            * Dust.
            * Clean the inside of your car.
            * Wax your car.

            As you can see, there are so many things you can be doing to keep your hands busy when you quit smoking. Try to avoid eating, unless you are eating fruit and vegetables or maybe chewing on sugarless gum. Most things on my list are things to keep you active as well as keeping your hands busy. You can really get a lot accomplished and if you stay busy it will help to keep your mind off of cigarettes.
            How to keep your hands busy when you quit smoking could be anything you think needs to get done, or just doing something you enjoy, as long as you avoid picking up a cigarette. By being physically active you may lose weight in the process.

            When you think about it, smoking takes a lot of time. Now you will have that time available to finish projects around the house, get in shape and get healthy along the way. If you want to quit smoking, but you dread the thought of the symptoms that typically go along with quitting, there's a proven alternative method to make it much easier on you. Re: Need some Non-Atkins suggestions!

                When I stopped smoking I used the Nicotrol inhaler and found it worked extremely well. It did take the edge off of the nicotine cravings but more important than that, I still had something in my hand/mouth. After a couple weeks that little piece of plastic was more important...I didn't really feel the need for the nicotine anymore. Instead I would fidget with the ciggy like plastic and sometimes gnaw on it when I was online or on the phone.

                Sounds attractive doesn't it? I didn't care. I credit my smoking cessation to that little piece of white plastic. Maybe you could find something similar to fidget with? Wishing you success in your battle. It IS a tough one.

                p.s. Oh yeah, it took me several months to break my plastic addiction.

                          I bought the Nicotrol Inhaler at CVS. You need a prescription for it though and insurance does not cover it. It is expensive but not really when you think of how much you'll spend on patches/lozenges/gum. Definitely cheaper than ciggys too.

                          I would imagine any pharmacy can order it for you. My CVS had it in stock.

                            Why do you always have to have a prescription for the good stuff lol Well for right this very second I am gonna wear my patch and I have picked up a cap to a pen and have it in my mouthGotta be a better choice than food, right? And its gotta hole in the top so I can suck thru it just like a cig

                              I got my prescription from my dentist! No hassle, no lecture or grief about how I HAD to go to a support group like my doctor was giving me. My dentist mentioned that quitting would be a good thing and when I said yes, she gave me that Rx.

                              I had never heard of it before but you could check it out online and if you're interested, maybe you can just call your doctor and maybe they will phone in a Rx for you?
