    Re: alcohol allowed?

That football analogy has no relevance to my opinion on alcohol consumption. A more appropriate analogy would be how people follow the Bible/Koran/Torah too strictly, and we all know what trouble that leads to.

Dr. Atkins wrote a theory-based diet book that is doubtlessly effective, but that doesn't mean that a) it's set in stone or b) his suggestions are of equal relevance to everyone who follows a low-carb lifestyle. Further to this, people aren't on this message board to follow the Atkins Diet, they're here to lose weight. If someone offers a suggestion that has proven to have worked for them, it shouldn't be shot-down automatically because it's not written down as part of the diet.

        what does ????? mean?

Don't isolate a sentence from the context in which it was written to try and make an impact. Of course they're here primarily to lose weight!

Is there anyone on this board who is underweight? I very much doubt it.

I would not be here if I was on Weight Watchers! or the grapefruit diet, or the blah blah blah diet. I am here to learn/follow the Atkins WOE.

I have already advised you that they are other sites that may welcome you, maybe they will will agree with your views...maybe you can share your views there without them arguing with you.

haha, I guess an opinion isn't valid here.

his suggestions are of equal relevance to everyone who follows a low-carb lifestyle
                    True, for two reasons.

                    1. Because not every "low-carb lifestyle" is Atkins.

                    2. Because one does get to individualize the plan in OWL. As part of this individualization, alcohol may be added in OWL Rung 5.

As others have said, telling someone that "Everyone is different, so try it and see"... without consideration of one's Atkins phase... is not responsible advice. However, I do know of one place that has EXACTLY this philosophy... so anyone interested in "migrating" there can shoot me a PM.

people aren't on this message board to follow the Atkins Diet
ADBB means ATKINS Diet Bulletin Board and, according to our name and to our Mission Statement, we are following the Atkins Diet.

I most emphatically disagree. Dr. Atkins had a large practice in New York city in which he developed and refined the principles put forth in his book. He was fond of saying he was a practitioner, not a researcher.

I enjoy wine; I enjoy beer. Having the wine and/or beer slows my progress, so I rarely drink them. When I do, I have ONE glass and consider it a rare treat.

Sugar + yeast = alcohol. Sugar + yeast on Atkins?!?!? Fuggetaboutit!

Your assertion that alcohol lowers blood glucose happens with a condition called alcohol-induced hypoglycemia. I mentioned it in my initial post on this thread. It occurs when one's glycogen stores are low or non-existent---people on Atkins have low or no glycogen stores. So telling someone it's okay to drink because alcohol will lower your blood glucose and you won't have blood sugar spikes is misleading and potentially life-threatening.

While it does occur in the presence of "excessive" alcohol consumption, you have to look at how "excessive" alcohol consumption is defined: drinking more than the moderate amounts of alcohol. Moderate alcohol consumption is defined as 1 drink for a woman and 2 drinks for a man. 1 drink is further defined as 12 fluid oz beer, 5 fluid ounces of wine, 3.5 fluid ounces of a fortified wine, 1.5 fluid ounces of hard liquor.

A more appropriate analogy would be how people follow the Bible/Koran/Torah too strictly, and we all know what trouble that leads to.
Oh sure we know what kind of trouble not following the rules can lead to. Like Adam and Eve getting kicked out of the Garden. Like Pandora opening that box. Like that idiot who sued Atkins because he did his Atkins by eating cheesecake and pastrami and allegedly developed heart problems Alleged Atkins Diet Victim Files Suit I guess he felt that following the diet too strictly (ie eating veggies and minimally processed meats) wasn't in his best interest. So he did his own pastrami-cheesecake version of the Diet because he "had to make Atkins work" for himself.

Dr. Atkins wrote a theory-based diet book that is doubtlessly effective,
Not theory-based at all. It's anecdotal, but not theoretical. And with the research done at Duke University it's moved from the anecdotal to the controlled studies.

but that doesn't mean that a) it's set in stone
It is if you follow Atkins.

or b) his suggestions are of equal relevance to everyone who follows a low-carb lifestyle.
Well, of course, afterall he wrote the Atkins Diet, not the South Beach Diet or the Fakekins diet. So the principles and practices of Atkins may not apply to South Beach or any other low carb diet.

[/ Further to this, people aren't on this message board to follow the Atkins Diet, they're here to lose weight.
I would think that one would join The Atkins Diet Bulletin Board, because one is on Atkins.

If someone offers a suggestion that has proven to have worked for them, it shouldn't be shot-down automatically because it's not written down as part of the diet.
Alcohol is written as part of the Diet, but it's not appropriate during Induction phase or the initial part of OWL Phase. You have to understand that this IS an Atkins Diet Bulletin Board, so the advice we give is based on the ATkins Diet, not the ChubbyRoman Diet.
