  • No whey? Yes whey!

I've been reading up about the benefits of whey protein as I'm thinking of purchasing some to add to breakfast smoothies. I just have a few questions.

If you have one to recommend, is there a specific product description you look for? I get confused by all the promises on the packages aimed at body builders.

Are these powders made of natural ingredients? I assume taste might be an issue as they all seemed to be either chocolate or vanilla flavored with sucralose... which has me wondering if such a product is going to have me climbing the walls with sweet cravings.

If you would recommend against whey protein, please would you tell me your reasons.

Wish I could help ya, but I know nothing about those protein shakes, I always thought they had to many carbs for Atkins, but i haven't looked at any for years.

But this will bump it up to the top at least.

    Your stats are great btw

      Re: No whey? Yes whey!

My urologist recommends that I have whey protein for its alkalizing properties. As a protein source, I think whey beats soy hands down. As you mentioned, there are a ton of them out there. I use several different brands and buy the unflavored versions. Different brands have varying amounts of protein (some are geared towards bodybuilders and the protein is very high) so you may need to adjust your protein in other meals if using one of the higher protein ones.

Brands that I use are from Jay Robb (unflavored), Designer Whey (the all natural unflavored/original one) and a very pure one that is Rx grade that I order online. A thread I wrote last Fall on whey that may have some more useful info can be found here. It's about using whey protein during Induction but I wrote a lot about the benefits of whey protein in it. You have to be careful with the different protein powders. Check the carbs before buying! Soy protein tends to have a much higher carb count than Whey powder.

Remember the warnings about using too much Sucralose. For some people it can cause a stall and you sit there wondering what you did wrong. If you don't use much Splenda each day then it should be fine.

Some people also have a sensitivity to whey protein. This will cause you to have some stomach discomfort.

I like Whey as I use it in various recipes but also use it as a drink when I am too busy to prepare something to eat. It usually backfires on me though as it tends to make me ravenous soon after!

          Hi Suzanne,

I have been losing weight pretty consistantly (although yet to make a profile on here) on this WOE and have a vegetable protein shake every morning. I look for the 100% Whey Protein that comes in either Strawberry or Vanilla, with 2-3g carbs per serving (1 scoop).

I mix one scoop of powder with 250ml water, 2 handfulls of spinach and 6-8 small spears of asparagus. I think there is something close to 30g of protein per scoop, with no sugars or sweeteners, and as I mentioned, only 2-3g carbs.

Takes a little getting used to but I look forward to mine each morning now!

Very low carb, high protein, easy, quick breakfast that also includes a good percentage of your daily vegetable needs!

Hope I have been of some help.

          - Jimmy

Where are the carbs coming from? What are the ingredients?

            Very low carb, high protein
Atkins is a high fat diet though, not high protein. During Induction, roughly 65% of our calories should come from fat.

              Re: No whey? Yes whey!

Whey - all the "whey" for me
I do not use it in induction - my induction foods are very basic but once I hit rung 2 I add whey. I use a generic store bought one with as few carbs as possible. Mine has 26 grams of protein and 2 carbs per serving and it is sweetend with splenda. So when I make my drinks I do not add more sweetener to it. I also use whey when making nut flour muffins or pancakes and stuff.
If I could afford it I may go with things like Jay Robb or Designer Whey.

Wow thank you so much everyone!!! I LOVE THIS PLACE!

With this information, I think I did make the right choice to NOT purchase that mega-sized bag of EADS chocolate whey powder. All the package talked about building bulk like for body builders. I have a feeling all the chocolate and splenda would bulk me up all right.

But I bet Whole Foods has a collection of products I can browse and choose one or two to try. I'll definitely give Jay Robb and Designer a good lookover. Jimmy, that veggie shake sounds AWESOME! I have some friends who drink some kind of seaweed and algae shake... looks really gross. LOL But yours sounds pretty good.

                Thanks again everyone! You rawk!

                  Re: No whey? Yes whey!

what you want to look for in buying a whey protein product is whey protein isolate as the very first ingredient. If it is isolate then it would be a pure protein product and legal for induction as a protein source. if it isn't an isolate then you need to wait for rung 2 of OWL.

it costs money to seperate the whey proteins from the dried whey and some companies use a when concnetrate blend. that is where most of the carbs come from in low carb whey protein products. it is the same sugar as in milk.
DO not buy whey powder as that is full of carbs and only has the water and milk casine proteins removed from milk.

My mistake, it actually does contain 2g of sugar per serving, with 3g carbs total.

And yes I completely understand that atkins is a high fat, and not a high protein diet, and most of my calories do come from the fatty meats I consume - bacon, sausage, pork, etc. I simply use this shake as a quick breakfast fix with lots of vegetables and protein to get me going for the day.

It just says lecithin, not soy lecithin. Which means it could come from sunflower oil, or egg yolks as well as soybeans. Ultimately its up to the user to decide what they want to put in their body.

just about any powder food substance that is to be mixed with a liquid for use will have soy lecithiin in it. it is almost impossible to find already mixed up foods that don't have it.
