  • Allergies/Allergic to Wheat, Gluten???

I dont want to advertise or endorse what I have done, but I went off of Atkins and switched totally to a low protein, high carb (mostly wheat bread and semolina, and unbleached all purpose flour) for a little over a week. I guess I just needed to "see" if things looked any greener on the other side.

Although I did loose 5 pounds (results not typical, please don't try it) I feel MISERABLE!!! I feel like I did prior to Atkins which is over 1 year ago. While on Atkins my asthma improved, my allergies almost stopped, I was no longer "puffy" like a marshmellow... Well, after just 10 days I'm ready to commit to this WOE 100% again and this time I'm more thankful then ever!

However, Just a few questions. Since eating the bread, I feel my asthma is just waiting to flare up again, my allergies are on high-alert, and my fingers have increased by atleast 1 size if not 1.5 size on some fingers. My face is a ballon!

I tried googling my symptoms and it appears that I could have an allergy to wheat or gluten... anyone know about this? If you can guild me in the right direction, that would be great!

I can't imagine it being water weight, as the scale is down 5 pounds!!!

    Thanks in advance,
    Amanda

    Celiac?

    Food intolerance?

    Allergy?

Yep ... discussed in your copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002).

Eating just wheat for a week would give anyone a belly ache, especially after not eating it for long time. Don't be to quick to self diagnosis, I did that last year and turned out I was wrong on every count

I think when or if we come of Atkins and dive into the last of starches especially gluten like that - that some of us experience some discomfort. This may not mean that we have a full fledged allergy but rather some sensitivity because we have not had it in a while. - This is a somewhat speculative opinion from me based on reading what others experience and my own experiences. It may mean that if you are going to wander in the last of gluten again you may have to take it slow.
Really interesting that you lost weight - I would put on about 6 lbs doing that = and I would bloat a bit too.
Welcome back to Atkins. Hope to see you around lots.

          Re: Allergies/Allergic to Wheat, Gluten???

I have a sensitivity to wheat, which I discovered when I got on OWL Rung 9.

I still lost weight whenever I ate wheat, but I would wheeze and my nose would start running/be stuffy. That was strange because after 6 months on Atkins, my asthma and allergies improved to the point where I didn't need to take a daily antihistamine for my allergies, a daily inhaled steriod and a daily B-agonist for my asthma. In fact, I only had to take 1 puff of Albuterol before I exercised in order to keep my lungs open. Anyhow, I went to my doc, told him what was up. He said if I had 2 choices: 1. I could go through the testing to see if I had celiac or just a non-celiac wheat sensitivity: if I was celiac, I would have to stay away from wheat or if I had a non-celiac wheat sensitivity I would have to stay away from wheat or 2. I could forego the testing and just stay away from wheat. I choose #2 (I hate needles and no matter what the outcome of the tests, the treatment would be the same.)

So, I think it's best for you to see your doctor and see what options you have.

            Re: Allergies/Allergic to Wheat, Gluten???

I have a gluten, wheat, rye, non celiac allergy and it sounds like you may have celiac disease when you said you lost weight when you ate wheat and gluten, although you lost weight you are hurting your body by eating it if you do indeed have celiac disease. The best thing to do is go to the doctor and they can do an easy blood test to find out if you have celiac disease if it comes back negitive then you need to do a specific allergy testing to find out about gluten, wheat allergy. I have the same problems as you if I eat gluten with the puffyness and feeling terrible although when I eat gluten I gain weight very fast, and cannot lose weight. I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

              Re: Allergies/Allergic to Wheat, Gluten???

Glutens not only muck up the blood/brain barrier and inhibit the absorptions of necessary amino acids, it creates a dysfunctional system whereby your body craves more and more and more grasses to make up for the lack of seratonin due to the inhibition.

Your body will never lament the day you decided to not feed it what it wasn't supposed to have.

Humans weren't meant to eat grass.

if it is a gluten issue you will also need to avoid rye, barley and oats as they also contain gluten. if it is just a wheat nongluten issue then the others should be okay.

                  Re: Allergies/Allergic to Wheat, Gluten???

Thanks so much!!! I am to have my regular check up in March and will ask then, until then I am back to doing Atkins! And so happy this time to be here. I don't know, maybe life is beating me and finally teaching me some hard lessons. In some how, I always focus on the weight, the number on the scale and that concept of being "healthy" has slipped my mind. Well, that "healthy" feeling is what I am searching for again!

                        Re: Allergies/Allergic to Wheat, Gluten???

Personally, if I wanted to be sure about allergies or anything physiological I'd refer the questions straight to my family doctor. While online advice is free and there are many wise people here who can offer experience, there's nothing like a good face-to-face with my family physician.

As to what to do... I firmly believe that if it works I probably shouldn't "fix" it. Atkins works for me. As I go through the rungs I find that certain foods don't set well whether due to allergy or a trigger for overeating. To thine own self be true. xoxo
