  • Bad news today

I just had some blood work done a couple of weeks ago and got the results today. I have been diagnosed with diabetes. I am meeting with the doctor to discuss a plan, but I don't think he is fond of Atkins. However, he wants me to lose weight, so maybe he will be fine with it if he knows I can make this my WOL. I do know that it has been documented that Atkins can reduce or eliminate diabetes altogether.

I did get some good news - this is day three of induction and I am down 4 pounds! I love seeing that progress.

Great articles! I am going to print them and take them with me on my appointment to discuss them. My doctor is a friend of mine, so he knows what my weight struggles have been for the last few years. This will help.

how bad was your blood sugar from the blood tests? will you be diet controlled diabetic or need medications too?

Your atkins should ahve your blood sugar stable by the time you see him but you need to be aware should you go off plan with a carb binge your bllod sugar will shoot up very high.

              Re: Bad news today

Sorry to hear about your bad news...hang in there though...I have read about so many diabetics from this forum that have done AMAZING eating this way. Sadly, Atkins at times gets a bad rap because people are so uninformed and ignorant when it comes to the facts regarding this way of eating and have made MAJOR assumptions without looking into things closer for themselves.

If this is a way of eating that you want to do, it comes down to the fact that this is YOUR body, not the doctor's. I know when my doctor first found out what I was doing, he was not too impressed but his thought was..."Whatever it takes to get the weight off"....I think after seeing what I have done, he sees the value in eating this way, how it works and his ideas have changed.

The way I personally looked at it when I first approached him was (I didn't say this outloud but my actions and determination demonstrated the following thoughts). "This is my body, I will do what it takes (as long as it's healthy) to become healthy and lose this weight....he works for me...not the other way around."

I think it's great that the two of you are friends, perhaps that will help him be more open to supporting you eating this way.

CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss...keep it up, you're doing terrific!

              All the best,

                Re: Bad news today

My doctor was reluctant to jump on the Atkins bandwagon when I told him what I was doing. But I educated him along the way and he is now less reluctant to listen to his patients when they say they are doing Atkins.

The primary concern of most docs is that diabetics need to lose weight and a safe manner to manage their diabetes. Follow Atkins as written. Move to OWL after induction. And think about every morsel you eat. Don't deviate.

BTW, I formerly was on insulin twice to three times a day, three oral medications for diabetes. Now I take nothing and my HmgA1c was 5.9 at my most recent check-up. I'm a believer.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

I went to my Eye doctor last week and he told me I needed to get my sugar checked as he doesn't like the look of my right eye. I feel for you Keith, but if it's true, we can manage it.

                    Re: Bad news today

                    Keith,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I have been a diabetic for 19 years, and Atkins will definitely help even out your blood sugar, lipids, and of course your weight. Whenever I change doctors and mention Atkins, they get all in a twist. They speak from ignorance, thinking Atkins is only meat and fat. I have found better results by telling my doctor that I am following a reduced carbohydrate, natural food diet with a minimum of 20-30 grams of low glycemic index carbs per day. One doctor said that was a good idea, much better than Atkins. Six months later, when my lipids were well below his goal and my weight was down 20 pounds, I told him I had been on Atkins and gave him some reading material so he could come out of the darkness.

Thanks so much for the encouragement and kind words. One of the reasons I am not concerned is that I know that with the proper diet and with the proper mindset, diabetes can be eliminated. That is my goal. This was a real wakeup call and a great motivator. I can't wait to be one of the success stories of ADBB!

                          Keith,

You are not alone in your frustration with the doctor. I met with mine today (at the Diabetes Center of America no less) and the nutritionist suggested I eat lower fat protein and 60 grams of low GI carbs per meal. 60!!!!!! I told her that wouldn't happen because my insulin dosage would go through the roof. I am sticking to my Atkins because that will help me get my blood sugar and cholesterol where they should be. I will go back in 3 months to see how my cholesterol and A1C look, and then we can discuss Atkins and how "bad" it is for me.

fluffyman when you do get a cholestoral test done make sure you get the full cholestoral test done one that mesures all sizes of LDL cholestoral and the results will blow your doctor away

and never get the common total cholestoral test done
total cholestoral tests are basically useless and they are the ones they give us so they can say we got bad cholestoral and put us on useless drugs

a total cholestoral test will say you have bad or decent cholestoral even when you have great cholestoral

and Keith48 welcome to ADBB im positive you will beat type 2 diabetes

edit: also Keith48 make sure you drink extra water cause when loseing a pound or more a day of fat i think drinking extra water is helpful to help flush the toxins that were stored in your fat out of your body
