  • Clam Chowder?

Good morning all! Just wondering if anyone knew the carb count for New England Clam Chowder? I know the potatoes could really add up those carbs, however; I was planning to eat around the little devils! If anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it. It is my DH and my anniversary, (14 yrs!!!) and we are going out for seafood. Thank you everyone.

I wouldn't eat like that in a soup in a restaurant.

    It's been thickened with flour.

      Re: Clam Chowder?

      Congratulations on your anniversary!

FYI - Carb count for 1 cup of Clam Chowder - 16.6 grams http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/Foo...30/2/Food.aspx

If you're going out for seafood, eat seafood (fish and/or shellfish.) Chowder has milk - lactose, flour - carbs, potato - carbs, corn(?) - carbs. Starchy vegetables (potato) aren't added to OWL until Rung 8, and whole grains (flour, corn) OWL Rung 9.

This is a good resource for the OWL Carbohydrate Ladder. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...te-ladder.html

Here's the Handy Wallet-sized list of Induction approved foods: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ved-foods.html

These are the foods you may eat liberally during Induction:
all fish, all fowl, all shellfish, all meat, all eggs

*Oysters and mussels are higher in carbs than other shellfish, so limit them to four ounces per day.

**Processed meats, such as ham, bacon, pepperoni, salami, hot dogs and other luncheon meats and some fish may be cured with added sugar and will contribute carbs. Try to avoid meat and fish products cured with nitrates, which are known carcinogens. Also beware of products that are not exclusively meat, fish or fowl, such as imitation fish, meatloaf and breaded foods. Finally, do not consume more than four ounces of organ meats a day.

      Hope this helps,
      Kristin

                Re: Clam Chowder?

I'm from Cape Cod so we have to have clam chowdah. I think it's a law. Alas, ALL clam chowders that you get either in a restaurant or commercially prepared are thickened with flour and contain (usually) a lot of potatoes.

You were given some great suggestions for alternatives to eat. Happy Anniversary, BTW. Just wanted you to know that if you really love clam chowder you can make an Atkins friendly version at home. It is more of a soup as it doesn't have flour and of course, no potatoes. Saute chopped onions and celery in butter. If you have some bacon and/or bacon fat, add that too. Add 1 qt. clam stock and simmer until veggies are tender. Add 1 pt. fresh chopped clams, heavy cream and heat until hot. Season with salt & pepper to taste. It's even better the next day.

You could add some Thick 'n Thin like they do in the recipe for cream of mushroom soup in the back of the book.

I use ThickenThin in clam chowder, and it turns out wonderfully. I haven't used cornstarch or flour as a thickener in years.

Where do you buy thick and thin? I keep seeing it here but have never seen it in a store. I use coconut flour for gravy and stuff and it works pretty well. I 've been meaning to make some lobster bisque (love that soup!) I just have to come up with an Atkins friendly recipe, which shouldn't be too hard. One of my favorite things about this WOE is that with a little effort you can come up with an alternative for just about anything.

I buy mine from the same place Atkins buys hers--netrition.com. It's a bit spendy, but a bag lasts me for a year or more.
