Re: tryng not t give up but i have lost nothing in months

i have decided to take a break for now. i am driving myself crazy and i simply don't have the willpower to stick to a diet without results. i have an appointment with an endocrinologist on feb 11. hopefully he an figure out what's wrong. once that taken care of, maybe i can give it another go. thanx for all the support everyone. i'm not quitting. just going back too the starting line.
i'm 25 years old, mom of two, ready to do this once and for all!
note: i am breast-feeding, though my baby is nearly weaned, eating most solid food now. i am doing this diet with the knowledge, approval, and at the suggestion of my doctor and having done my homework. i will not discuss the matter in any of my posts. please don't bring it up.

Shrew2u - I didn't mean that it's impossible to lose weight while nursing. I just meant that lots of moms would have a hard time losing weight while nursing if they're on Atkins because of the nature of the WOE. I bet weight loss could easily happen on maintenance, but on Induction, the body is likely to start panicking.

Tweedledee - I'm glad you're going to get checked out by a doctor. Please don't be gone too long! Whenever your baby weans (I think you said that's happening soon) you'll probably have much better luck - unless, of course, there are other issues at play.

      Good luck!

Which leads me to ask...why would the body hold onto fat stores at 20g net where it would not at, say, 60g net (a mid-range CCLM)?

Now, I could easily see a nursing mom having a tough time of it if the caloric intake was too low at *either* net carb level - starvation mode would be triggered and mom's metabolism would slow to conserve energy. But, if one is determined to nurse and keep one's carb level low, keeping calories high and aiming for optimal nutrition would seem to put Low-Carb Nursing Mom in no tougher position with regard to burning fat stores than a Higher-Carb Nursing Mom. Would I advocate it? No. But I would point to the birth control, thyroid, inadequate nutrient intake or underconsumption of calories as areas for further examination before the net carb level itself.

You see Shrew, not everyone is making good choices for those 20 net carbs. I saw the menu you posted and that looks fantastic, but most Induction menus look waaay worse than that. Being deficient in nutrients can interfere with weight loss. Plus, many people were deficient in certain nutrients from their pre-Atkins days... so if they start Atkins and eat only 3 cups of lettuce... well...

My guess is that ANY drastic change in eating habits could cause a nursing mom's body to go into conservation mode. It doesn't know what is happening and protecting the baby's food supply is priority #1.

I'm curious and just want to ask... I mean I understand if you feel the need to take what you think you need from the boards and leave the rest, but... if you're THREE MONTHS into induction and trying this self-inflicted fat-fast (Lord save us from the mortally dangerous fat-fast!!! Seriously girl fat-fast can hurt ya bigtime.) and ignoring the repeated pleas to move into OWL and give your body the nutrition it's begging for...

But my question is this, why do you refuse to at least try the rungs of Ongoing Weight Loss? Why not "take a break" from induction and try out the rungs of OWL instead? It's such a healthy way of eating and so delicious.

Personally three months of induction would drive me outta my tree and that's no lie. Give me yogurt! and berries! and seeds to sprinkle my salads! and more veggies! and beans! hehe I do love this WOE. Anyhow hope you haven't strayed too far from us. Come join me in OWL. The eatin's mighty fine.

Re: tryng not t give up but i have lost nothing in months

Suzanne, unfortunately, this is what happens when a "weight loss" mentality trumps a "health" mentality. In my journal, I posted my weight loss history (dates when I would reach a new low only), including nearly a month to get down one pound, nearly two months to get down seven-tenths of a pound and nearly three months to reach my next (5 measly pounds!) mini-goal. If I weren't doing this primarily for my health, I probably would have quit months ago. So I can understand Tweedle's frustration from that perspective.

And let's not forget that the OP refused to accept the plea that someone nursing shouldn't be doing ANY of the weight loss phases of Atkins.

Based on my reading of the OP, she was going to do Atkins "her" way, regardless.

Suzanne, where did you get the idea she was doing a fat fast? I may be missing something, but from what I read, she was only considering it.

Brandy, to me that's like saying someone is only considering stepping out in front of a bus or only considering cutting themselves... fat fast is dangerous, potentially life threatening, can create a whole new set of metabolic problems... and all too common among Atkins folk who try it as a last ditch effort to lose weight NOW rather than focus on healthier standards of good health and wellness.

I'm personally so grateful for the Admins here who refused to give me a pat and an oh-it's-gonna-be-ok when clearly I needed redirection. If I want someone to hold my hand and lie to me there are several forums I can go to where the admins will tell me to go ahead and try fat fast (a little won't hurt) and let's not forget stackers (a couple doses won't hurt) and one day a week cheating (geez it's just one day) and don't worry about the exercise part (uh huh) and all kinds of... well I won't say it on the forum but back home in Kansas we refer to it as what exits the south end of a north bound bull.

I've been stalled for a couple months now and finally yesterday, a couple days after going to the gym, by golly that scale moved a pound. I didn't need to take a break from Atkins. I needed to apply the principles of Atkins correctly to my daily living.

Suzanne, I totally agree with you about the fat fast. My point was, as I read it, Tweedle considered the fat fast and rejected it - for which I say good for her!
