So for me that would be 31". As I am 5'2. Any thoughts on his comment. And my waist is not that maybe down the road...

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
Well considering that when I was a size 33 I was overweight, I'm shooting for a better goal then that. According to that theory, my waist should be 33.75"
I was a size 33 at 210 lbs...so...yea I don't think that works out too well for me.
Mini Goals:
Goal 1 - 10% (September 13th, 2009)

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
That means that my waist should be 33.5 inches (I am 5' 7")....heck, considering I am a size 46 in the waist now, i'll take the 33.5!!"My goals minus my fears equal my reality"

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
I'm not buying that theory. At 5'4" that would put mine at 32, heck that's what size my husband wore at the time we got married, and they fell off of me like clown pants. Now, while I don't think I'll ever get back to a size 25, I certainly would like to be at or under 30".1st Goal ~ 199 Onderland -Met 3/29/10
2nd Goal ~ 174 No longer obese
3rd Goal ~ 150 In the home stretch
Final Goal ~ 145 or below (I'll know when I get there) No longer overweight
(Next pic at 187)

Current Mini Goals:
1) 35 pounds lost
2) 40 pounds lost to move to Rung 5
3) 45 pounds lost to update 15 pound loss picture series

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
lol - I'm glad I'm 5'7" and not 5'8", lol. According to that chart if I'm an inch taller, my waist has to be an inch thinner
That at least sounds a bit more realistic...

I never had a waist that small, even when I was 125#. I am one that puts the weight on around the stomach, and my waist/stomach at the widest is 46"! Horrible, isn't it!!! I really don't see how I will lose 20".
My widest point at the thighs is 23". Kind of small for someone with such a big tummy!
Even when I was 160#, I could not wear pants that were not elastic waist. If I bought a pair of jeans to fit my waist, they were almost double the size around my thighs!!!259/206/149

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
That's rediculous!!!
Everybodies bone structure is different, therefore, everyBODY will be different. A 6' tall man's waste will be different than a 6' tall woman's. Shoot two people of the same gender and height will have different "ideal" waste measurements.
Even fitday.com BMI index is wrong, simply by basing body weight vs height. It said my BMI was 41, when after a compehensive physical with many measurements I was 34. I'm still obese, but that's WAY off.PBK - M/45/6'3"
You're not a failure until you quit trying.
Restarted Dr Atkins Diet January 2 2010.
Next mini goal is to get under 300 lbs. Done! 3/8/10
Next mini goal is to make it three months without alcohol. Started 1/1/10 Done!
Next mini weight goal is 289. Done! 4/4/10
Next mini goal is 278 -50 Lbs
Eventually, I'd like to join the century club.

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
I believe that they are trying to revise the guidelines for what makes you at risk for things like heart disease, diabetes, and other obesity related illnesses. The scientific community realizes that a persons weight is not always good indicator of whether or not they are obese or not. For example, people with higher muscle mass weigh more than someone who is not active. A woman with double D breasts is going to weigh more than someone with an A cup etc. These are just a guideline to keep yourself within a range. When I watched the show they said that women should try to keep 32" and under as once you are in the 35" range, you are more prone to develop diabetes. For men it is 36" and under for a healthy size. If you go on his website, there are a lot of interesting articles on this. I find him interesting as he a proponent of getting rid of sugar, complex carbohydrates, more healthy fats in our diet etc. He recommends shopping at the aisle only on the edge of the grocery store (cheeses, meats, vegetables etc, and not in the middle. (Processed carbs and "fake" food) The last year I have noticed a shift in the medical communities thinking that is getting closer and closer to Dr. Atkins way of thinking, without acknowledging that it goes along with his guidelines.

Re: Dr Oz said waist should be half our height
I agree these things--BMI, Waist-to-Hip Ratio, what your scale says---are just guides. The trend is shifting towards % body fat as the measure of obesity. In fact, the Mayo Clinic came out with something called "normal weight obesity" about 2 years ago. Mayo Clinic - Normal Weight Obesity: An Emerging Risk Factor for Heart and Metabolic Problems
Basically, it says you can be of "normal" weight, etc. but if your % body fat is high, then you still have the same health risk factors that a person who is overweight.~Megs~
