  • Low Potassium!?

    Hello all,

I have been using fitday quite regularly and taking supllements. The only Nutritional number that I cannot get to meet my daily requirements is the Potassium level. It usually falls about 50% of DRV and the vitmamin stores do not sell potassium near the levels needed to meet that requirement; unless i eat them like I used to eat M&M's!

Thoughts? Should I even worry about this and just wait to see if there are any problems? My doctor will not prescribe them, as Dr. Atkins used to do for his patients, and I really cannot change my doctor at this point due to some personal reasons.

    Thanks!

    Re: Low Potassium!?

well you can pick some higher potassium proteins and veggies but even Dr Atkins couldn't meet the potssium needs in his picks for a daily menu in DANDR.

some folk use the NuSalt sub from Mortons to increase their potassium levels. Just be careful cause too much is unhealthy which is most likely why your doc won't prescribe you any until you present with symptoms from your low potassium.

      Re: Low Potassium!?

I have problems with low potassium (and I even have a script), when I know I'm low, I use salt subsititute made with potassium chloride. But be careful to not over due it, too much potassium is as bad for you as too little.

Edited to add: Sorry 2big, I must have scrolled right past your reply, because I sure didn't see it when I said almost the exact same thing you did, LOL

Half an avocado has 345 mg of potassium.

that avacado would provide about 10% of the days allotment of potassium so more is needed. we need around 3300 mg a day and potassium is water soluble so the more we drink the more we flush out of our body

I've been using Morton's Lite Salt, which has 10% of your daily potassium per quarter teaspoon. You can use replace your salt with it and easily up your potassium.

I use Cal-K, a calcium potassium supplement because I sometimes get leg cramps (and I don't drink milk- lactose intolerant). Would that be enough for you? It has: Calcium (Calcium Carbonate) 150 mg; Potassium (Potassium Tartrate) 800 mg.
I got it at my local drugstore.

I don't take a supplement beyond my multi-vitamin, since I'm a veg hog and get 90%+ of the RDA for Potassium that way (I try to eat about a pound of veg from the colors of the rainbow each day). But here are some high-Potassium, Induction-friendly foods (per 100g portion) per Nutrition Data:

                Bamboo Shoots

                Beet Greens

                Chicory

                Dandelion Greens

                Garlic

                Kale

Mushrooms - Shiitake and Portabella especially

Spices - if you use them, make sure you log them into FitDay - every bit counts

                Spinach

                Swiss Chard

                Tomato Paste

I love that site but the info is given for cooked drained greens and one can cook an entire bag 8-10 cups raw of spinach and end up with a 1/3 cup of spinach after cooking and draining. The Potassium needs would require one to eat way more then the induction legal 1 cup raw or 3 cups of the salad veggies.
