I LOVE the Atkins diet and this forum. I started a week before christmas, and I feel great with the 23 lbs I have lost and continue to lose. I get complements on how different I look. After a few weeks my wife got started and she has lost 12 lbs. Our clothes don't fit and we love it.

I started out the diet wrong, and through this site and the book I quickly got on track. The only mistake I made it I didn't get my chlolesterol tested before I started and REALLY wish I had. I did get it tested today though. My LDL is 142, my HDL is 37, and my triglycerides are 143. I went back to may 2007 and found an old blood test. At that time my weight was also 200 lbs, my HDL was 59, my LDL was 111, and my triglycerides were 183. I am happy with the improment in my trigycerides, but concerned my "good" went down and my "bad" went up. This was 2 years ago, and I know if I would have been tested 2 months ago I this would have been worse and my dr and Iwould be excited and not concerned.

I can't argue with how I look and feel, because it is great and my energy has increased and I have been exercising more. My Doc today asked me what my "long term plan was because this isn't sustainable" I had to ask him, so I asked if he ever read the atkins book, and he hadn't. He said he was concerned that I was eating too much red meat. I have actually been buying ground turkey and making my own turkey burgers and my guilty pleasure or when I don't have time is the carls jr low carb burger with no ketup. (just found out in and out burger has a secret menu and has a "protein burger") Otherwise, a lot of chicken, pork ribs, eggs, bacon has been creping into the diet more. I do the right fruits and veg, avacado, broccoli, spinich, For my 10 carbs I ahve been adding strawberries, blueberries, almonds, in the right proportions.

I bought a smoker for xmas, and I have really enjoys smoking ribs. I have been baking alot and been very strict to replace all sugars and refined flours with slenda and flax seed meal, almond flour etc. I haven't been to a resturant for two months. Everything I eat I prepare from scratch and that has really helped. I do need to change the diet though and start subsitituing fish for for of the eggs cheese and red meat I guess.

I have two questions: Is there such a thing as an Atkins friendly Dr and how do I find one? My Doc could have easliy said keep up what you have been doing but cut out the pork ribs and eat more salmon. Watch that cheese and egg maybe use egg beaters. Second, should I look into the south beach diet? does that help focus on fats and which type of proteins I should eat.

    thanks,

    td

Low carber make a nondangerous LDL that is called the fluffy one and not the VLDL did your doc do a full panel and check your LDLs to see if they are good or bad? My bad cholesterol is still higher then my doc wants but with my good being so high he is happy since the VLDL is less then 20

Where you working out back then? have you been doing your mandatory atkins exercise part? exercise can raise HDL

I'm confused here what 10 carbs? are you in premaintnenace and adding back 10 net carb amounts to your induction and OWL carb level?

      Re: Cholesterol

tripleduce it sounds to me you got the average almost useless cholesterol test done

by the sounds of it your doctor did not even check for your large healthy good LDL which is known to sky rocket on the atkins diet then for 6 or so months you will have high LDL on there useless test that just shows total cholestoral because it takes 6 or so months to get rid of the small dense LDL the bad type which you had before starting the diet

your doctor just copied the same crap saying LDL = BAD HDL = GOOD and its not true

anyways know this people like the eskimos who eat a diet of up to 80% fat and loads of saturated animal fats out of all there people who eat there native diet they have 0% obeisty, 0% type 2 diabetes, 0% heart disease

while 1 in 2 amaricans will die from a heart attack

really if you look at simple things like that and the fact that you are feeling soo good on this diet it makes you wonder if the average doctor has any idea at all what they are doing

alot of doctors say saturated fats are bad which is complete crap cause saturated fat is good for you saturated fat helps make the large healthy fluffy LDL

anyways if you want to have a record of awesome cholestoral get another test done 6 or so months down the road and make it a full panel check one that checks all the sizes of your LDL to see how much of your LDL is the good kind and also exercise more to get your HDL up

LDL is not bad your body needs it to live theres different sizes of LDL the healthy kind of LDL has no health risk and your HDL recycles your LDL

oh and the fact that your doctor was concernd about you buying too much red meat is a big warning flag red meat is extremely healthy just make sure you eat lots of fat with it you should get a new doctor or show that doctor that this way of eating is healthy

my advice is to stick to atkins your doing great im positive that you have tons of the healthy type of LDL so your cholestoral is fine and will get better the longer you stay on atkins you said it yourself you feel great on this diet

and atkins has a maintenance phase thats your long term plan atkins is no quick fix its a life long diet and its healthy iv been on it for over 5 years now

        Re: Cholesterol

222/203/186 Sorry for the late reply, I have gotten busy. Over the two years, my exercise has decreased, but I have been doing a good job the last few months.
I have added oatmeal to my breakfast, one cup, 27carbs, and keeping my net carbs around 80-100 a day. I have started using sparkpeople.com and I have been watching the fats closer. I don't think I was doing a good job with the meats I was chossing. I have cut out the pork ribs and pork, and I have added a lot more salmon and halibut.
Check out the feb 2010 edition of mens health. There is a fantastic article by Paul Scott "your unstoppable heart" about cholestrol. The articles sites much of what atkins has already told us. It actually suggests getting your cholestrol test and paying for it yourself. a LDL- S2GGE for $15, The VAP for $40, or the NMR lipoprofile test for $100. I am going to try one, not sure which yet and tak another test in a few months.
