  • Tomato lament

To me, the Tomato has always been the perfect veggie...
    It can go anywhere.
    You can eat it raw.
You can add it to a salad, stir fry, omelette,
You don't have to skin/peel it.
It tastes great without a dipping sauce.
It does not need to stay in the fridge.
It comes in convenient sizes...Grape, Cherry, Campari, Plum, "On the vine", (that one really cracks me up...aren't all tomatoes grown on the vine?)
    BIG BOYS, etc.
You do not need any utensil to eat one.
    It tastes Delicious!!!!!.......

    .......NO STOP!

This is the time of year that I am miserable about the state of tomatoes!!!

They either taste like water, or get soggy within 24 hours of purchasing, and they do nothing to enhance your food or your mood!!!

Why do we have to hit this so called "tomato dry spell" every year. There must be real--tasty---firm---smiling tomatoes growing somewhere in the world that can be sent to CHICAGO!!!

    Anyone else having this problem?

HA HA, Mission!! You're giving me hope!

Induction Boy forced me to eat tomatoes about a month ago and I've been faithful about continuing to incorporate them into my food without him being around to make me do it!! Seriously, I lost 70 pounds without eating tomatoes at all!!

Tomatoes are just one of those foods I hated as a child because old people forced me to eat them and I thought they were squishy and yucky. My only tomatoes experience until recently was tomato sauce on pizza, lasagna and spaghetti. LOL! I'm trying to be more mature about my veggie assortment this year.

I have noticed the tomatoes I've purchased recently don't have much flavor and by reading your post, I'm hoping there's hope for some tomato delicious-ness closer to the summer!!

Funny, just the opposite for me. I remember picking a tomato out of the garden when I was about 8 yrs old, and I didn't even wash it off or use any salt, I just bit into it out in the summer sun, and I felt like I was eating the best thing in the world. Two minutes off of the vine. I will never forget that moment.

And it is my Hubby's favorite veggie as well. We grow cherry tomatoes in pots on deck every summer, and we fight over them!!!

Just wait until they are "in season" again before you try to "take a liking to them."

        Re: Tomato lament

I hear ya girl... my SIL gave us a huge basket of green tomatoes at the end of the summer, and we finally ate them until the last went bad.

My DH have a master plan to start canning next summer. We like little "projects" like that. Funny my grandma never thought of it as a project but just what she had to do to put food on the table.

Actually this is the time of year that we like to go to what we call "little Mexico" and buy our avocados and tomatoes. Mexican markets do a lot of importing. They tend to have good avocados not the ones still hard as a brick, and Mexican cheeses are ohhhhhhhhhh my goodness so good.

I just took out a few cherry tomatoes that I bought Friday and they are shriveling up a little ALREADY!!!

Not very appetizing to look at-especially since they don't taste good either right now!!!

            Re: Tomato lament

one of the supermarkets had a "special" for grape tomatoes last week....99 cents for a pint. Of course, I bought about $10 worth, lol. What I can't eat immediately, I froze (they're great for cooking.)

Personally, the BEST tomatoes are the ones I grow in my garden during the summer. There's nothing like a homegrown tomato in flavor or texture. Granted, my tomatoes would never win a tomato beauty contest (they always have unsightly growing cracks and are misshapen due to the temperature) but they taste terrific.

I agree, and who cares what they look like!

This year in Chicago, most home growers had the worst crop in years. Apparently we didn't have enough HOT SUNNY STICKY awful (normal) Chicago summer days to produce good tomatoes. They were tastless, or didn't ripen properly, etc. Too bad, because many friend and relatives have a ton of extra tomatoes they are maore than happy to give away, and these were just terrible this year!!!

                Re: Tomato lament

I just love tomatoes and i'm very fortunate to live in a very tomato - productive country (delicious and inexpensive), however those late summer tomatoes are always best and i freeze them, esp the overripe ones>>> and when i'm ready to use them i run them under warm water to peel very easily and stew them for soup or sauce. A little on the carby side, but YUMMMM!

I fight the deer for my tomatoes in our garden so I'm stuck with the ones from the farmers market during the season. I bought a bunch of the not perfect ones and sun dried them so i have real tomato flavor in the winter.

mission - this has been my complaint for years...I quit eating them during the winter because they are so bad. I can't even eat them in a restaurant.

                    I miss them too!
