  • Oh, For Crying Out loud...

Well, this seems to be the story of my life.

I've felt kind of off for the last few days. My workouts have been leaving me quite winded and I haven't been feeling myself lately.

Just for the heck of it, I took a pregnancy test today and it was positive. Every. single. time that I get on a roll with losing weight, I get pregnant - without fail!

I'm not upset, per se. I absolutely knew it was a possibility, but I was really hoping to lose at least another 40 lbs before getting pregnant again.

    I'm just... shocked.

So, obviously, this means that I have to move on to Maintenance. Here's my problem, though:

I have NO idea what my CCLL is yet! I haven't gotten that far! What do I do, then? Do I just increase 5 or 10 g of carbs a day until I stop losing or do I try to get out of ketosis cold turkey?

As I understand it, all weight-loss bets are off when you're pregnant. So couldn't you just eat maintenance-level foods without regard to carb count?

    Congrats, btw.

You want to get out of ketosis.

You will do that at about 50 net carbs.

However, this joyous event doesn't mean it's a food free for all.

Atkins maintenance doesn't mean cookies, pies, and all sorts of junk food.

Read the maintenance chapters in you DANDR ... and follow the guidelines.

While you don't want to be losing weight, you don't want to be packing on the pounds either.

Re: Oh, For Crying Out loud...

                Thanks for the congratulations!!!

Believe me, I'm not trying to lose weight while pregnant, I just don't want to *gain* too much (besides regular pregnancy weight gain, of course).

According to DANDR, everyone has a different level at which they stop losing, and there is a fine line between losing and gaining. My goal is to stay close to that line so that I don't gain too much.

I gained 50 lbs when I was pregnant with my daughter. That was in part due to the fact that ALL I could eat was bread and rice (had severe hyperemesis for 30 weeks) and I was on bed rest for 3 months.

There is a STRONG possibility that I will need many months of bed rest again. I just want to be very careful that my weight gain doesn't get too out of control like it did last time - especially because I'm starting 13 lbs heavier than I did last time!

Thanks, J! I was wondering what level of carbs I should eat.

I actually re-read the chaper on Maintenance a couple days ago when I was suspicious...

Congratulations! A new baby is a blessing! Hope you are able to do maintence this time and limit the amount of bread and rice. Take good care of your self and your baby.

I know I'll be a loner on this point, but IMO if you get hyperemesis again you need to eat whatever you can tolerate, even if it is only bread and rice. By all means try to eat as well as possible, but remember all the healthy food in the world won't benefit your baby if you can't keep it down.

I'll be hoping things go better for you this time around.

                        First of all super congratulations
This happens. I think Atkins may be some kind of aphrodisiac and fertility booster. Actually I am sure of it.

And I like that you plan not to eat like crazy like some people do. I get really shocked about that - as if being pregnant means some free for all in the eating dept.
It will so much easier on everybody just to eat sensible and healthy and exercise and enjoy stuff.

                          ya just eat healthy
meat, vegetables, berries, liver like cod liver oil, eggs, unsalted butter and such real foods

and skip all the unatural bad foods like bread cause bread is refind grains a growing baby does not need that and it can just cause insulin resistance in your babys cells

and absolutely never eat any soy, soy lethicin, aspartame, hydrogenated oils, man made trans fats

Re: Oh, For Crying Out loud...

congrats. First off ketosis at least Atkins ketosis isn't dangerous for your baby cause ketones are the building blocks for neonatal brain tisues . It is the weight loss part that is not healthy for your new baby to be.

if you did your induction by the book then you can estimate your CCLM by eating a few more carbs then the CCLL charts in chapter 14 ( should be around page 173 of your DANDR 2002)

Back in 2003-4 there was a page on Dr Atkins website written by one of his staffers who was a dietician AND was preggo with 2 twin boys. She wrote about eating Atkins maintnenace and what foods she actually ate. She ate the legal induction veggies and more veggies, she had whole grains, and nuts and seeds, and berries, and fruits. basically the whole carb ladder was part of her eating.

Right now you need to worry about getting some folic acid into your system for the neural system development of your new baby. I hope you have been eating your leafy greens.

and after your new little one arrives you can decide if you are ready for induction or will be breast feeding and need to wait a bit.

I was very aware of Atkins when I got pregnant in 2003 because I did Atkins in 2002. I gained 35 pounds with my daughter and lost all the weight in 6 weeks. She was 8 lbs 6 oz. Good luck to you!
