  • Beans

I've ordered the newer Atkins book (I had the old one) and wanted to know if beans (kidney, navy, northern, etc.) are allowed after the induction. Also, what about nuts?

    Re: Beans

Beans are allowed in 5g carb increments in OWL Rung 6, and nuts are allowed in 1 oz. increments (apart from cashews - that's a half oz.) in OWL Rung 3. The Carbohydrate ladder has 9 rungs, where you add additional things to the basic Induction food list at each rung. 1 - extra Induction veggies, 2 - dairy, 3 - nuts, 4 - berries, 5 - alcohol, 6 - beans and legumes, 7 - fruits, 8 - starchy veg, 9 - whole grains. It will all be explained really well in the book. You're talking about Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002, right? Hope this helps!

      Re: Beans

Just about everything is allowed after induction but in moderation and some maybe just very rarely.

Right after induction you will enter the phase called On-going- Weightloss (OWL) And here you will start adding back carbs in order according to a carb ladder starting with the saftest first - so it starts with more veggies, then dairy, then nuts. Beans are quite carby and comes later and you can only have small portions (very small) you can check this sticky if you want more detailed information

Good job on getting the book. Hope it comes soon.

Wow, I can't imagine being able to have fruit? Can you actually keep the weight off when you add these things?

Some people definitely can, but not everyone. Working out regularly makes the upper rungs more reasonable. I personally had to severely limit nut consumption because of portion control. The fun thing about OWL is that it's really just experimenting with what your body can and can't tolerate (and still lose weight).

that is what you will discover for yourself when you work the OWL carb ladder. Should be chapter 14 if you have the 2002 DANDR.
Some folk can eat everything on that carb ladder from more of the induction veggies all the way to grains. other have issues with specific foods on the ladder and ahve to avoid them.

You will discover for yourself if you can tolerate them without getting blood sugar control isues or weight gain. the foods that we reintroduce are ranked by glycemic index so the first few are pretty easy things like more of the induction veggies fresh dairy, nut/seeds and berries. I can eat all but strawberries without an issue and can't eat control my portions on watermellon so I avoid it but can have canteloupe and honeydew. If I eat a fruit as a piece of fruit like a pear or an apple I'm in trouble but as part of a veggie or meat dish I'm fine. You will have to find out what you can and can't tolerate as you undergo the great food experiment known as OWL.

have fun take good notes on how you feel before during and after you consume a new to your food and retest cuase it could have been something not that food that caused your issue. NOt2late is a great example of that. She went very slow and tested many mnay fresh cheeses and had issues with them all until she discovered a new brand and discovered she was reacting to an addative in the cheeses and not the actual cheese.
