Hi all i have RA and Fibro and so the only way for me to exercise is to do a heated pool that is specifactly for Arthritis patients. They have an arobic work out they do there and after that i just walk up and down the pool on my own. I have to use a cane to walk and can not stand for very long either but in the pool i can walk without the cane...i love it.. Onl;y problem is when you get out.. cuz it feels like someone handed you a pile of heavy bricks or something. lol...One problem to my pool it is clear across my city from where i live. That's about 40 miles round trip...so i will have to just go maybe twice a week at first. I have not started it back yet or the atkins either because i have been trying to figure out what mentally is making me sabatoge myself. I am divorced and disabled pretty bad from the RA and Fibro..Had some problems in my marragie dealing with the weight. When i was dx with the RA and Fibro in 2000, i was already about 40 lbs overweight..then they threw me on predisone high dose's to try and control the huge flare i was in..Then they added more meds to the mix and even more after that...I was on the predisone for 18 months daily 75 mgs 3x a day and i gained a huge amount more weight...Finally got off the predisone after the Remicade kicked in and i was weened off it. Then I quit smoking a pack a day habit in 2003 and gained even more.. So now I am at 245 lbs and only 5.1 ......i feel like i am in ****...i can't do much cooking because i do not have the strenght to mess with the pans too much or the prepartion of the food... Cant stand for longer than 2 or 3 minutes at a time. So i usually get frozen foods i can put in the oven. If they had soome kind of frozen atkins foods i could do in the oven i would be estatic!! But they don't, that i know of anyone know of any?? please let me know...I am on SSI and food stamps but i do not get much of either one...The SSI i get is actually the highest amount they pay but it takes all of it just to pay the bills....so i am not sure what i am going to do..my cholestrol is high and bp is high too...so i take lots of meds.. And mentally i feel like crap just trying to deal with all this.So if anyone has any help for me please let me know ok..But before i start atkins and make it my WOL forever, i need to find out why i do things to sabotage my efforts to lose this weight. But in the mean time if anyone can help me with advice or anything please do..thanks so much for reading.. Cheryl~

Re: Need help!! Please???
this is a big post!
ok lets see this way of eating is very good i heard of this old man once who was in a wheel chair but now after eating naturally like this diet and going to the gym he can now lift 300 pounds
anyways heres my advice keep exerciseing even if its only in the pool your body needs it to get stronger and before you know it you will beable to exercise with out the assistance of the pool
the pool can be very useful for geting all them little muscles on your body for example exercises like side lateral raises which wouldnt be possible unless in a pool but even in a pool don't do to many of them at first
and as for food this is a concern not being able to stand for more than 3 mins but it is critical that you can cook your own food because the stores frozen food packs will not make you healthy
alot of the time i mostly eat eggs, unsalted butter, meat, some feta cheese, broccoli, cod liver oil
and as for all the drugs and cholestoral med's you take try your best to become drug free cause really if the drugs make you sick and weak then they are not good for you and if you don't know what drugs to quit first start with the cholestoral meds because cholestoral meds are basically useless
this diet is very strict make sure your food stamps give 100% atkins freindly food cause believe me when i say this even if they add only a tiny bit of sugar to your food it will mess things up badly
do not get a cholestoral test done but if you still want one wait untill you have been on the diet for atleast a good 9 months i would say and when you do get a cholestoral test done make sure it is a full pannel test one that measures all sizes of LDL cholestoral
you know when doctors say LDL = BAD and HDL = GOOD well its not that simple.
the truth is your body needs LDL its used to make new cells and stuff and you would die with out LDL and theres different types of LDL one type is small dense which is bad and then theres a large healthy fluffy type which is good and has no health risk and your HDL recycles your LDL
now the reason you must wait atleast 6 months but id say 9 in your case before geting a cholestoral test is because of this
a total cholestoral test the one most people get which is mostly useless but it only says your total LDL yes thats right it does not tell you how much good or bad or what ever LDL you have it just combinds them all and tells you your total LDL.
and thats the problem cause when you first start atkins your body produces the large healthy fluffly LDL that has no health risk so then you will have the bad LDL from your previous way of eating and + now also good large healthy fluffly LDL from the atkins diet
and then when you get the avrage total cholestoral test done it will combind both the good and bad LDL and come out as your LDL being very high and the doctor will go berserk and say your diet is bad and put you on cholestoral meds
but you see the doctor is wrong your cholestoral is geting better and the cholestoral meds are useless because they do not regulate the size and type of your LDL cholestoral
the reason you wait 6 - 9 months is so your body filters out the bad small dense LDL so now mostly only the large healthy fluffly LDL is left and i think the reason it takes so many months is because your HDL keeps recycleing all your LDL but since your body is no longer produceing bad LDL because your eating a healthy diet the bad LDL will go away in time
and the reason you should quit your cholestoral lowering meds is because they take away all types of your cholestoral your good and your bad + they give bad health side effects so its better to just wait 6 - 9 months and let your body naturally cure itself with out the use of them drugs
now also know med's can cause horrible weight gain and weight loss problems so if there is any med's that you don't need you should stop takeing them
saturated fat like in meat, eggs, butter, liver, it creates the good large healthy fluffly LDL that has no health risk saturated fat is good for you
eskimos eat a diet of up to 80% fat with loads of saturated animal fats and out of all of them who eat there native diet they have 0% obesity, 0% heart disease, 0% type 2 diabetes
while 1 in 2 amaricans will die from a heart attack
however hydrogenated oils and man made trans fats are still extremely deadly
also don't eat any aspartame, or soy or soy lethicin. soy is extremely toxic unless the soy is fermented however fermented soy in western culture can be rushed and still have toxins so its safe not to eat any soy unless its from japan or some place you know has fermented it properly
Welcome to Soy Online Service
also about your little sig at the bottom of your post were it says
'' It makes sence if you eat low carb your not re-fuleing your body and so it HAS to burn fat to give you energy!
''
your makeing it sound like are body HAS to burn fat like are body does not want to burn fat but i believe are body wants to burn fat atleast till you reach a healthy weight just it is forced not too and here is the reason
you see for over 99% of humans entire exsistence we have been fat burning metabolisms but its only recently we are glucose burning metabolims alot of the time
the reason is because of all the poisonous food we eat now a days like refind grains bread or sugar candy or pasta these foods are in like everything we eat now a days hamburger buns, sandwich bread, just about everyone eats that everyday
and you see thoughs foods cause toxic blood sugar spikes and when that happens your body switches to a glucose burning metabolism to burn it off and if its not burned off it must be stored as fat and if you can't store it as fat like in a type 2 daibetics case it will cause kidney damage
anyways your body has built up a big system to work and survive with these toxic foods because we have been eating them are whole life.. but then all of a sudden bam we start eating healthy on high fat atkins and are body switches to a fat burning metabolism and also gos into ketosis it does all these things its never done in ages so thats why its called the 14 day induction flu your body needs time to adapt and re enter its natural fat burning metabolism system
heres info on ketosis

anyways if you want more advice or have more question feel free to ask

Hi, Cheryl!
What about boiled eggs, cheese, fresh vegetables, smoked salmon?Originally posted by KitKat11764 View Posti can't do much cooking because i do not have the strenght to mess with the pans too much or the prepartion of the food
Or you could roast a whole chicken at a time and that would be enough meat for a few days. And you could use some in salads or eat with a side of cooked vegetables (you can microwave them if that's easier) or even have it as a snack, with some fat (mayo, for example).
Do you know why you've stopped in the past?i need to find out why i do things to sabotage my efforts to lose this weight"Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

I have to say I am quite impressed with you already. We have members here that will drop the programme and their resolve if their pinky hurts - then they have to have ice cream or something. Here you are thinking about what to do with a lot of struggles going on.
I also suggest to perhaps cook something in larger quantity that will give you left overs. Like a pot roast or something. With potroast you can use a less expensive cut and just give it some liquid and time to cook.
Keep going lady. Losing some of those pounds will likely make some things a big easier on you. I am in awe of what you are doing alredy

Re: Need help!! Please???
My mother suffers both of the things you have, as well as diabetes and also walks with a cane, has trouble standing for long periods of time and is often seized up, but the worst thing you can do is stop moving. A couple of years ago I encouraged her to start walking short distances (which was up and down the driveway) once in the morning, and once at night. She eventually worked her way up,throughout different times during the day for short periods 1.5 kilometres and had a much easier time of losing and keeping the weight off.
You will find that once the weight starts coming off, you will have an easier time with everything, including the pain.
You can also stretch a couple of times during the day to prevent contractures and help with the muscle spasms. Of course it hurts, but what is the alternative? Push yourself a little, don't hurt yourself, but try to go a little further each week. Maybe also try having a hot bath or shower, before you start anything to help warm up your muscles and loosen up a bit. After your water exercises, walking is the next best thing.
Also have you thought of having a chair beside the stove to sit down when you can't stand anymore? That's what my mom does. The biggest problem will be convincing yourself that you can do it, but I know that you can. If my mother, who would always say "I can't",can do it, I know that you can too. You just have to remind yourself everytime you hear that voice in your head saying you can't, tell it that you can! Positive thinking helps a great deal.
Make up a plan for yourself with short periods of walking throughout the day when you don't do your water exercises. Even walking around the house can be a goal, and if you don't meet that goal, don't beat yourself up. Just try again the next day.

When I was having bad problems with my feet, I sat at the kitchen table to do food prep - you could cut up cheese, veggies, etc to be ready for mealtimes.Julie__________________F/37/5'2"__________________Start April 15, 2009

Re: Need help!! Please???
Hi! I have both RA and fibromyalgia and I know how bad it was (and still is at times) for me, especially when you have the extra weight and difficulty exercising making things worse. At my heaviest weight, I was miserable and in alot of pain and discomfort from both conditions and it was making my health so much worse. I couldn't cook much or exercise without sending myself into a major flare, and even the rest of the time, I was in pain.
Atkins has been a life saver for me.
Let me offer some advice based on what I've learned as I do this WOE.
Cook as much as you can at home and avoid processed foods and anything that comes out of a box. There are some pretty easy recipes and food prep you can do Lindas Low Carb site is wonderful for some easy recipes. For dealing with the tiredness and pain, I highly recommend sitting down as much as possible and taking breaks during food prep. Cooking as much as you can ahead of time helps alot too. Slow cookers are good for easy meals you can prepare ahead of time and fridge/freeze and typically do not require alot of physical prep. You can also use the oven in a similar fashion. Make up safe snacks to keep in the fridge ahead of time. Try and find specials at the store and freeze as much as you can. Planning is really really key here. Have meals planned out and backup plans. Also, doing food prep when you are feeling better to help for the times when you are not.
I have found some packaged foods that I can make/reheat easily, but you have to be very very careful about reading labels for these and checking for hidden carbs and fillers. They also tend to be a little more expensive. Frozen veggies if that's all they are, are typically good. I also keep frozen hamburgers and chicken breasts around for quick reheats. It is cheaper to buy in bulk and freeze it yourself however, but having these packaged ones aren't bad if you don't have the time/energy.
Also try and avoid alot of chemicals/preservatives/artificial additives, etc. Ex. nitrates, high fructose corn syrup, asapartame, MSG, etc and more.. (This is also why it's good to avoid frozen/processed food). Many of these can aggravate fibro/RA. The same holds true for Atkins bars/shakes/low carb products.
I've found that this WOE has really helped me feel better, in addition to losing the weight.
As for exercise, start out very slowly, even more than you think, but the key is to keep with it. When I started out, I did 5 mins of walking and maybe 15 minutes of very light weights 2-3 times a week. And over months, I slowly increased the time and weights. I took breaks (and still do) when I'm having a flare or bad spell but I still try and do a little something even when I am, even if it's just a small walk followed by a hot bath. I wish I had access to water aerobics which is wonderful exercise. Most of the ones near me are in pools that are too cold and it hurts, or it costs too much.
I've really turned around how bad I was feeling through weight loss, exercise, eating this way, and things such as vitamins, massage, chiropractor. I still have flare ups and set backs (bursitis often in my shoulders and hips) but I do my best to keep doing the right things and resting as needed. It's a very careful balance.
Good luck! You can do this!Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"

Re: Need help!! Please???
You are amazing in the way you are persevering in spite of all your health problems.
I second the idea of doing your food prep sitting down and also of maybe getting a slow cooker so you can make easy roasts and casseroles.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Need help!! Please???
since you can only stand for a few minutes what about putting a chair in your kitchen where you could sit and chop veggies at a counter or even do it on your kitchen table. Then you could take breaks as you get tired and in pain but still be ablke to "cook"
do you have a crock pot? that would be great for you a little prep and then let it cook all day long. If you get a big size one you could do a week's worth of chicken pork or beef at a time.by the book atkinseer
