  • Acid Reflux

For the past 5 months or so, I've had AR/GERD. I had it during both pregnancies and was hopeful it would be limited to my pregnancies, but it suddenly came on like gangbusters last Autumn and I've been suffering ever since. I tried all the non-medicinal tactics that I used while pregnant, to no avail.

Out of desperation, I started taking OTC Prevacid about three weeks ago and finally got some relief.

I have a doctor's appointment in a few weeks but in the meantime am wondering if anyone has any non-medicinal suggestions. I'm only in my 30s and not terribly excited at the prospect of being medicated for the rest of my life. (Yes, I do recognize there can be serious medical consequences if AR/GERD goes untreated. ).

    Thanks!

    Re: Acid Reflux

I find that my acid reflux disappears on Atkins. WHen I dont have carbs at night I dont have a problem. Maybe shifting some of your carb intake to earlier in the day might help.

    HW 298
    HW (this time) 248
    GOAL ONE 228
    (take 2)
    GOAL TWO 213 (personal goal)
    GOAL THREE 199 ONE-DERLAND
    FINAL GOAL 165

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

I can't quite pin down when my AR acts up, but it seems to be more mid-day than anything else. I am still struggling in the evening, but lying down when I go to bed, which aggravates many AR sufferers, doesn't seem to be an issue for me. I'm also gobsmacked that it came on so suddenly. Does your AR ebb and flow? I had never experienced this until my pregnancies.

I had this almost constantly before Atkins, for years (decades ) Like Jill, mine went away when I started Atkins.

Before Atkins, I found that dairy such as milk or yogurt (or ice cream) helped...I can't remember if you are intolerant of dairy? I have heard that dairy can make it worse for some people.

For me, very acidic foods made it worse - tomato soup/sauce, orange juice/oranges were the worst!
