  • Slim Jim Question

Anybody ever had Slim Jims while on Induction? I know, I know, it isn't "specificlly" stated on the "Acceptable Foods list. BUT, it's made up of beef and chicken and one serving (4 small sticks) has 160 cal, 14 g of fat, 6g saturated fat, 2 g carbs, <1 g dietary fiber, 0g sugar.

I wouldn't eat these daily or anything, but as an occasional snack I was thinking about having maybe 2 sticks (or 1/2 serving). Any thoughts?

Not sure which version of the Slim Jim you are thinking about but the original doesn't look legal to me.

Ingredients: beef, mechanically separated chicken, water, corn syrup, salt, less than 2% of: spices, dextrose, paprika and paprika extractives, flavoring, hydrolyzed soy, corn and wheat proteins, lactic acid starter culture, sodium nitrite. Contains soy and wheat

The corn syrup, dextrose, soy, corn and wheat stick out. I haven't found a manufactured jerky or meat stick that is induction friendly unfortunately.

Remember, look at the ingredients and the nutritional distribution. Good luck!

Looking at the menu you posted on the other thread, I think you should

1-Give up the Slim Jims. Not accepted. Besides, you don't need a snack, your menu is lacking a lot of veggies.

2-What info are you using to follow the Atkins WOE?

3- Do you have the Atkins Book.

OK, Read these links, and evaluate what you are eating/not eating.

This is where you start---“Read the Book”---this is the Version followed on the ADBB.

        Re: Slim Jim Question

I have read the book...and reread the book. I was just trying to "fudge" a little with the Slim Jims. I know I am supposed to have veggies, but I literally hate them! I have to find ways around that?? I do like cucumbers in vinegar, so I could eat some of those, I guess. My big thing right now is trying to get 30% protein everyday. It's harder than it looks.

          Yep.

Are you talking about pickles or some cucumber salad with vinegar?

If it's pickles, make sure you read the list of ingredients. Some have sugar added.

I could eat some of those, I guess
It wouldn't be enough. If you want to follow Atkins and make it your way of eating for life, then you'll need to eat more than cucumbers.

cucumber salad. i realize i have no choice but to incorporate some veggies in here somehow. i have stayed on track with the 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs. it's alot to try to do at one time when you are first starting, you know? but i WILL NOT quit!

Pre-Atkins, were you eating any vegetables other than cucumbers?

                Re: Slim Jim Question

Pre Atkins my diet consisted of anything terrible you can think of. typical day:
                no breakfast
2 coffees with cream and sugar (real)
peanut butter and cheese crackers/ peanut M&M's for a morning snack
sushi, salad (ginger dressing), fried rice- lunch
sweet tea (3 or 4 glasses a day)
dinner-fried pork chops, Rice-a-roni broccoli au graten rice
maybe some lettuce and cucumbers and tomatos with vinegar
                snack--something chocolate

                  salad
What was in the salad? You could probably just use a different dressing.

I see you also like broccoli and tomatoes and lettuce (choose something more nutritious than iceberg)...

Did you try cauliflower? You could rice it and it looks similar to real rice:

Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes

Do you like peppers? You could roast them... or you could stuff them with cheese... or add them in a quiche or in scrambled eggs... or make Jalapeno Poppers...

Do you like chili? You can make it without beans and add some onion, tomatoes, peppers, etc. to it.

                    Re: Slim Jim Question

Thank you for the great recipes, Georgiana! Those all sound awesome. I've been kind of scared to venture out there much for fear that I may mess up my progress? But those are simple, 2 or 3 ingredient recipes. I did make egg salad one night this week with eggs and mayo only.
