  • Snacks and Drinks on Induction

Okay so I bought some BBQ Pork Rinds at the grocery store today (two bags) and some sugar free kool-aid mix (I used to be a kool-aid junky). When I looked both said zero carbs.

Unfortunately, when I got home I tried about 5-6 pork rinds. I thought they were great and couldn't possibly be zero carb. Well, I checked out the ingredients and sugar is one. I'm ripping lol. Also aspartame(sp?) is in the sugar free kool-aid, which I read can cause stalls and insulin spikes.

I'm a little disappointed because I am looking for a snack and a non-water drink I can have a little bit of at night.

What do you guys/gals have? I'll probably pick up some plain pork rinds tomorrow, but I don't know what to pick up to drink. For now, I've only been drinking water - but I'd like to get a glass of something else in. I figure one glass of splenda or something with sucralose won't hurt.

What do you all suggest?? Thanks.

Also does anyone experience restlessness/insomnia during ketosis? I think I am getting whacked with every symptom of ketosis so far lol.

Why do you want sweetened water?

      >>I figure one glass of splenda or something with sucralose won't hurt.>>

      Will it help?

Well I need to shake the bad taste in my mouth...usually veggies help, but something to drink other than water would be good, yeah.

Well, water is what's going to help.

You could put some lemon/lime juice in the water ... just don't see that you need to sweeten it.

I don't eat "snacks"...I eat 4-5 small acceptable foods meals throughout the day. What is a snack anyway? Something between meals? How about some celery and cream cheese, or chopped up celery mixed with a little acceptable salad dressing?

The sooner I got away from the snack mentality, the better off I was. To me, before I found this great way to eat, snacks were pretty much junk food, and just the word "snack" brings up a flashback of carby addictive non stop stuffing of my too fat body!

Anyway, that's just me. I'm just sayin'...

Re: Snacks and Drinks on Induction

Snacks and sodas contributed to my rather robust size at 260 lbs when I started this WOE. I'm still robust at 239, but not quite as saucy LOL. Anyhow I find that when I snack on anything really... even 100% safe-Atkins-friendly-no-carbs-here foods after a certain time of evening sha-BAMMMM I wake up bloated and unhappy. Go figure.

So, like Mission was saying I eat about 4 or so meals a day and drink loads of water. I like my water flavored with a splash of lemon but at school don't have this luxury... just drink water plain, and that's fine. I have a good breakfast to start the day, a nice lunch, a protein based after school mini meal, then supper with my husband if I'm very lucky. After a workout I might have a smoothie with fruit, yogurt, almond milk and protein powder (I'm in OWL). However, I know if I sit down with pork rinds (zero carbs yay!) pretty soon here comes the carton of sour cream (oh look it's low-carb yay!) and a sugar-free soda (pffft no carbs there nope!) and I swear the Hoover Dam can't hold as much water as I can. It's just not worth it.

Oh Suzanne, I love this I too don't snack, simply because the one munch ends up to a never ending road of munching. Probably something about the structure of meals. My in between meal snacks, I look at as mini-meals for the same reason.

Re: Snacks and Drinks on Induction

I guess by snack, I meant a small meal after dinner, when I am hungry.

I usually have 2-3 scrambled eggs for breakfast and a cup of plain tea. No sugar, cream, splenda etc.

For lunch, I have been having a chicken breast with some cut-up cucumbers and like two slices of tomato.

The at dinner I tried to have something from beef lol...because I know fats are important.

When I use fitday my calories are pretty low - so I was thinking of adding another meal at night. Thats why I originally thought pork rinds on the side with something little.

And as for brushing my teeth...I do that about 4 times a day lol. I may have let myself get a bit out of shape, but I've always been a hygiene freak.

Anyhow, I am really loving Atkins. I am still on induction and I haven't weighed myself, but my face and body are visibly thinner. I am going to weigh myself on Sundays. So probably tmrw morning. I started at 200. I wouldn't be shocked if I lost more than 5 lbs by the way my clothes and body feel.

                  Thanks for the advice guys/gals.

This isn't going to help you lose ... or keep up with any weight loss you might be having right now.

Pork rinds aren't really a good "meal" ... they're really not much nutrition there.

What vegetable are you having at dinner?

You might try having some vegetables in your scrambled eggs.

And I agree, you're not eating very much food. I would be starving on what you're eating!

How much water are you drinking?

That's fine if you want sweetened water.

One of the purposes of Induction is to get rid of our "addictions" and cravings for sweet.

Just remember the limit of sweetener servings per day.

surely if sweetening with splenda see,s you through induction then its ok ?

Your meals should be balanced and contain some fat, protein and (preferably) veggie carbs. Your lunch is really low in fat.

You could make a salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, some onion, etc. and add olive oil (or any other oil) to it.

And as for brushing my teeth...I do that about 4 times a day lol.
Dr. Atkins suggested chewing parsley. You could also try chewing mint.

                              >> surely if sweetening with splenda see,s you through induction then its ok ?>>

It might be ok for you. It might not be ok for someone else.

Some people find that having anything sweet keeps their cravings alive.

Just because something is "legal" doesn't always mean it's a good idea.

                              >>this shouldnt affect any addiction>>

                              It might though.

If you can't imagine having plain water ... then you need to think about why you want "sweet" water.

If you want to have sweetened water "just because you can", then maybe it's something you want to try not having.

                              Your decision.
