  • Worried.

Maybe I'm jumping ahead of myself but I don't believe I am in ketosis and it's day 4. I haven't really been able to test. I know for a fact I've consumed less than 30g carbs a day. I have some questions. Will exercise help me induce ketosis faster? I just picked up Alpha Lipoic Acid as well, I read that would help, will it? I have worked out a couple of times, pretty intense too. I just haven't had any symptoms except for today my urine smells different, I drink water like crazy (even before I started) and normally it was always clear, now its not. Any ideas? I'm really determined.

You say that you've been eating less than 30g of carbs a day, but have you been following induction as per DANDR? You can't just eat less than 30g a day and expect to lose weight/get into ketosis I'm afriad.

Induction allows up to 20g net carbs. Most people can stay in ketosis at a higher number, but you are supposed to start at 20g.

And you have to watch the quality of carbs, in addition to the number.

Also, everyone is different. I've seen some people say they go into ketosis after a day or 2, and some take longer. It usually takes me about 4 days.

        Hi Serowend and Welcome,

It seems you may not be familiar with the plan. What source are you using for your information? Not quite sure what your question is, you are not sure you are induction and do we have any ideas...? I think you need to do some reading, as Steph said, you are not following the plan.

          Re: Worried.

Ok well I just bought and downloaded an Atkins Essentials E-Book. I'm looking at the induction etc. I don't see whats so different from what I'm doing. I said under 30g carbs meaning closer to 20g or less, sorry. Yeah I eat mainly meat and cheeses. On the nutritional values they all say 0g carbs and some have 1g. I need stuff I can eat on the go. All those recipes that were on the induction list were just fancier combinations of what I'm already eating. I use a powder called "Go Greens" to get 6 servings of fruits and veggies per packet (goes into an 8 ounce bottle of water). Maybe the servings of fruits in the packet is disrupting the induction? On the Atkins induction recipes, they all contain more carbs than anything I eat... I'll admit I have had some lunch meats that I guess would be considered processed, so maybe that would be it? I eat a lot of meats and cheeses. Im going to pick up some ketostix tonight, maybe those will indicate more? Is it possible to go into ketosis without any symptoms? Like I said I'm on day 4 of this new diet. Other than the processed meats, the ebook I got isn't red-flagging anything I've done so far. I exercise a lot. I'm not out of shape, just wanted to lose that last bit of bodyfat %. Any feedback would be awesome, I appreciate what I've gotten so far.

Are you eating any real vegetables or just drinking this powder?

            What are the ingredients?

They won't tell you if you're following Atkins correctly. You might also be in ketosis without changing their color.

If you post a complete menu, with quantities and net carbs for all foods, we'll take a look.

This book only covers the Induction phase. To learn Atkins, not just Induction, the book you'll need is Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002).

                Hope it's complete ... they're not always.

                >>eah I eat mainly meat and cheeses.>>

That's not how it works though. Atkins is really about the vegetables.

                >>I use a powder called "Go Greens" to get 6 servings of fruits and veggies per packet>>

Not really the best way to do it.

What you're doing isn't Atkins though.

Ok well if vegetables is the problem then that's easily fixed. But just work with me for a second, yeah I'm probably not doing something right, maybe I am though. I'll get a menu out so you can review it, but to my logic, if I cut the carbs, sugar, caffeine etc. (which I have) My body would have no other choice but to convert to fat as an energy source, right? Maybe I'm wrong, just putting that out there. And yes the ebook is a complete version... and it also contains OWL and Pre-Maintenance.

                    Re: Worried.

Also the book says I can have 2 cups uncooked, 1 cup cooked vegetables. It doesn't say it's a requirement. Just saying. The book also reccommends some of the Atkins processed products, which I have read on here you advise against. (I don't eat those anyway) OH! I almost forgot though, I've had trouble sleeping since I started, and I wake up frequently in crazy sweats. Possible indication? I have very light headaches.

Also a lot of the symptoms of the diet I'm reading are caused by breaking the addictions to things like sugar. I never consumed much sugar anyway. I was previously on a very strict diet of Nonfat/High Protein low calorie etc. But seem to hit a plateau, so I wanted to give this a try to throw a curve ball at my metabolism.

Does it have a chapter 27 and 28?

                          Serowend,

If you check out the Terms of Service of this board, you'll see that we go by the rules of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002ed. We are not familiar with the particular book you are using, it has different rules. The rule in DANDR is 3 cups of veggies / day for induction.

Hi Sero and welcome to the boards!

This last time I started doing Atkins I had long since lost my copy of DANDR. In the meantime and until my book arrives (any day now!!!) I used this forum to get information on how to do induction: Atkins Diet 14-day Induction - Atkins Diet

Cheese has one carb an ounce regardless of the zero carb label. The only truly zero carb food is meat and oil and there are even exceptions there (like organ meats and some seafood). When I eat processed meats I usally round it up to the next carb because manufacturers round it down. The carbs add up precious fast, so eyeballing it with hmmmmm that's about so-and-so carbs didn't work for me. I had to weigh and measure my food and drink and every bite/sip that crossed my lips for two weeks to learn what 20 carbs or less of food looked like including my coffee consumption... but that's just my experience with it.

I printed off the list of acceptable foods and used that for my shopping list. There are also great recipe ideas as well as here: Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Home

When I bought ketostix I got mine in the section where they sell diabetic supplies at my local Wal-Mart. Good luck to you.

                              Re: Worried.

I agree that a menu would be helpful. The purpose of Induction is to learn how to eat and jumpstart our bodies to becoming fat burning rather than carb burning.

And if you are confident that you are eating as DANDR 2002 reflects, then it may be that four days isn't enough time to judge whether you are in ketosis or not. Save yourself the money and don't bother with the keto sticks. To me, from your "symptoms", it sounds like you are likely in ketosis. Just do yourself a huge favor and follow the plan as stated in DANDR 2002. It is straightforward and it works. Induction only lasts for two weeks before you can begin moving up the OWL rungs in the second phase.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.
