  • Sodium....

As my BP is a little high (probably always will be according to my doctor, even once I hit a healthy weight - its genetics), I am constantly concerned with sodium and so this new WOE opens up more concerns because of the meats & cheeses.

What are some red flags as far as sodium goes? What are the induction legal foods that are very high in sodium?

    Thanks!

Processed foods, in general, are high in sodium. Bacon and sausages are two obvious examples.

If you eat only whole foods, it is easier to control the amount of sodium in your diet.

Like Georgiana said I would stick to whole foods. Avoid at all costs any processed and smoked meats, lunch meats and the like. Cook/fry/roast your own fresh meat, fish and poultry with herbs and olive oil rather than salt. Make your own vinaigrette for salads. Also cheese can contain a lot of salt. Alpine lace makes a low-sodium Swiss, and Biazzo makes a no-salt added fresh mozzarella according to one site. Boar's Head brand also offers some low-sodium varieties of meats and cheeses depending on your area. This blog might prove helpful Please, DON'T pass the salt!: Low Sodium Cheese

Really the food offerings on Atkins are so flavorful you may find you don't need the salt to make the dish nummy.

One of the best things you can do is skip adding salt when you cook or at the table. If you must use salt use a small amount of Sea Salt in place of regular table salt. You will get enough sodium in everyday foods without adding more to your food.

My husband is a heart patient and is on a severly restricted sodium intake -- after an adjustment period he can tell when we eat out the amount of salt added to his food and has started ordering "no sodium added" while cooking - actually we rarely eat out now because of the amount of sodium added to all foods, either by the manufacturer or by the person preparing your food.

        Good luck to you.

pickles olives condiments like mustard and salad dressings.

          Good luck lowerign your BP
if you do have a BP machine at home try to monitor yours becaasue Atkins is a natural diuretic eating plan and many folk need their BP meds lowered when doing Atkins.

Also be careful with your potsssium intake too because it is hard to get enough on the limited induction veggies.

Fast foods, processed foods and restaurants have an incredible amount of salt. So I don't think Atkins is necessary going to increase a person's sodium intake. I think mine has gone down quite a bit. And my blood pressue is nice and low.
So yes - read labels and just think about what you are doing.
This is a great topic. People just take in so much sodium it is a really big concern.
