  • questions, flax and non hunger

    1. For those of you (esp in induction) when you are not hungry do you still force yourself to eat? Also do you find yourself getting full just after a couple of bites? Are you counting your calories too?

    2. I am interested in flax seeds and didn't know if anyone has ever used them and if there were any good recipes to use them in. I have read mixed reviews on other sited googling flax recipes.

    Thanks,

While I have never experienced the hunger suppression factor in such a way that I got full after a couple of bites or had to "force" myself to eat, I have read that some do. I would make it a point not to go more than 6 hours without something... and that something doesn't have to be a huge meal that you have to force down. Have a few bellpepper strips with a piece of string cheese... just something to keep your metabolism going.

Calories - while Dr. Atkins didn't stress counting calories, that doesn't mean that calories don't count. I keep track to make sure I'm not overdoing it, or underdoing it. Overdoing it keeps me from losing... Underdoing it keeps me from losing.

I would read this sticky, first, for guidelines on eating Flax during Induction. When you do use it, make sure they are ground and not whole... they pass right through you with no nutritional benefits if they are whole. Try doing a search for flax recipes in the recipe forum and you'll get some ideas.

I had read somewhere about grinding the seeds up but totally forgot about it, thanks for the reminder.

I think my problem with hunger is I am having heartburn and it is causing me hunger feelings but when I eat I'm full.

Going to take an antacid. And I don't care if it's not allowed. I need it!!!

Re: questions, flax and non hunger

Since I have issues with compulsive overeating and emotional overeating, the lack of hunger was a welcome miracle. I try to eat only if I'm actually hungry, but I would encourage you to do what works for you.

As to flax, this is a good article: Flax Seed Health Benefits and Safety Issues - Flax Seed Nutrition

I use ground flax seed meal because whole flax seeds don't impart any nutrients, just travel right on through if you know what I mean. My favorite is the muffin in a minute "my style":

        1/4 c flax seed meal
        1 egg
        pat of butter
        1/2 t baking powder
        onion and garlic powder

Stir it up in a bowl and nuke it for one minute. Pop it out of the bowl, slice in half, smear with cream cheese and that's what I call mmmmmmmmm

Some prefer the sweeter version using a packet of splenda and some cinnamon. I also use flax meal to make pizza crust for an induction friendly pizza and to make crackers for induction friendly crackers. It's really awesome stuff. Don't be surprised if you notice a temporary weight gain as flax really holds water as it travels through. It's great for your skin, good healthy stuff.

Oh and be sure if you're using some that's been in the cabinet a while to give it a good sniff. It goes rancid because of the high oil content. Make sure it's fresh. Good luck to you.

I am liking the "great for skin." I had to switch to a different BCP last year (which I think was partial problem with my weight gain) and it gave me horrible skin.

Your recipe sounds great and I am going to look into the website you listed. And grind, use up quickly.

BTW Suzanne, awesome job on your weight loss, !!!!

I keep mine in the refrigerator for this very reason.

when we are not hungry we are not supposed to eat unless it has been 6 hours since our last waking meal and then we have a snall snack with some of our carbs with a protein/fats.
Only feeding our hunger is one of the huge learning experiences of the Atkins plan. We will have days we are hungry and eat a lot and days we are not hungry and don't eat much just as a picky toddler does. That is feeding hunger and stopping. If we could all do that from birth to now we would not be overweight.

I love flax. You need to be aware that flax as a soluble fiber is going to add scale weight cause it absorbs fluids and will hold that weight from mouth to rearend. If you freak out with a pound scale weight you do not want to be eaitng flax seed meal. You can get the same flax health benefits from flax oil without the intestinal weight added.
