I am going to my daughter's wedding in June. I would like to have One, (1) only. 4oz of Red Wine to toast the bride and groom. Can anyone tell me at what rung in the OWL you are allowed to have this? I have read book and I realize that wine is not something Dr. Atkins recommends, but has mentioned its allowable. Just wondering at what point I can add it in? AND,,, for those that have,, what success or pitfalls have you encountered with having a glass of red wine maybe twice a week?

Yes, can anyone clarify this? I was reading one of Dr Atkins earlier versions (I think pre-2000) and it placed alcohol in one of the first 6 rungs. Then when I read a later version of the book, it places it as the last rung.
I also recall that alcohol is not metabolised the same way as carbs are - that our bodies burn it the same way as we burn glucose, but it is not converted to body fat like carbs/sugars are.
Can anyone confirm this?30yo F 5'5 (166cm)

It's allowed on OWL Rung 5. With alcohol, your body will stop burning fat, burn the alcohol, and then go back to burning fat. This is why Atkins doesn't recommend it, because it pauses the weight loss.. not to mention the effect of Alcohol VS. I've always kind of figured that another reason why it's way up there on the ladder is because when we drink, we sometimes lose our sense of judgement, and that can lead to loss of control.
I remember a member talking about how they went out for a drink with friends and woke up on the floor the next morning with frito bags around them....an extreme case, yes, but you get what I mean.

I have NEVER been one to eat when I drink, but I do understand what you mean. There have been times when I ended up on the floor, but not with fritos around me!

I am very fond of having a few glasses of wine a week.
I have noticed that it had no impact on my weight loss - but did cause cravings!! I think that that is the biggest problem - not giving into cravings after your glass of wine.
I did do an experiment and drank wine one week, and absolutely no alchohol the next week. My loss was the same, and didn't seem effected. But then again everyone is different, experiment and see for yourself

Cravings is sign of blood sugar instability. On Atkins, that's a very bad thing because part of losing weight on this diet depends on stabilizing the blood sugar, which in turn means stabilized insulin, which means no fat storage.Originally posted by GenSI am very fond of having a few glasses of wine a week.
