well I just now finished a brief encounter with a co-worker not heated or anything we are good buddies but he overheard me talking to another co worker about my diet and he walks in and says oh that diet is not good for you, so I ask him why. And he said it burns your muscles first than your fat. So I kindly said no it doesn’t not if you follow the rules correctly and do it right. and he says he’s on this good diet and he eats all his carbs in the morning and very little at dinner which doesn’t really sound like a diet but that’s what he is on. I simply gave him a brief overview and he sort of agreed with me but not all the way. He also said he was taking omega 3 and I told him ,that is good and I will be taking those as well pretty soon and that I will be eating other fat as well like steak and he said steak fat is no good. and it sort of ended right there I didn’t really have a comeback for that because I am not fully educated yet I’m on my 7 day on induction so I’m learning I have the audio book and have listened to it but I think I’m about to listen to it again so I can retain some more information because im pretty sure I will have this encounter again. any good points that i should have pointed out.

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
You are absolutely right to go back and listen to the book again. There are lots of folks on this board who have been following Atkins for years who are still picking up new information by rereading the book.
Dr. Atkins has a section about how it has never been proven (still true, by the way) that saturated fat is unhealthy. All the studies that claim to show it is, are also high in carbs.

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
You could tell him high carb/high fat= dangerous.
Low carb/moderate fat & protein=ok
High carb/low fat=ok
He's probably doing high carb/low fat, so he doesn't really have any grounds to say anything bad about Atkins, since his food "combinations" are entirely different than yours.

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
There will always be people that object to whatever we want to do. People get emotionally invested in whichever plan they follow. I quit trying to convince others that my way was best with one exception ... I worked closely with my doctor. The proof was in my weight loss and my health indicators. And that is all we both needed to call this a success for me.

I used to tell people that I was on Atkins and be fine with the challenges and my opportunity to defend my WOE. Then I just couldn't be bothered.
Now when I tell people I have cut out sugar and wheat everyone thinks I am very healthy!F - 162/154/134

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
I know I've gotten "looks" from folks who were disgusted watching me waddle back to the buffet table for yet another plateful of whatever yuck that was helping me pack on the pounds and feed whatever was eating my lunch that day... didn't phase me one bit. And I don't feel an immediate need to become an Atkins apologist so that others will be ok with my food choices for the day. I'm ok with it and it's really none of anybody's business but mine.
I have a hunch your coworker doesn't say one word to obese people in the office happily chewing on a cheeseburger with fries and a shake. When we decide to do something to change our lives sometimes it puts a mirror in front of folks considering to do the same. Their defensive attitudes I believe stem from their own fears. I encourage you to just live and let live, enjoy your healthier choices for this day. Your weight loss and improved health will speak volumes.

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
Since it's a coworker I would not have another discussion with him. Not worth stirring up work drama over. If he brings it up again tell him I appreciate the advice but I am going to stick with what I am doing and let that be the end of it. Don't let him drag you down to his level.

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
you could tell him the truth about healthy eating and he would say your full of ****
or you could tell someone the truth about healthy eating and they would be so skilled at manipulating words that they could trick you into agreeing with them then later on you would relize they were full of ****
but if i were you i would avoid all diet argueing with other people because you don't know enough about this diet yet and people will say things you don't know and make you look bad and or make you doubt the diet that you have given faith into
but you may research and learn and when you know more about how it works you can tell them how it works and if they don't believe you thats ok but atleast they won't turn you away from the atkins diet due to you not knowing enough about it
heres some links you can learn things at
page one has a useful post about cholestoral and also page 2 on that link has info about the dangers of unfermented soy
heres a link about ketosis so you know its healthy
Ketosis Myths and Facts on the Low-Carbohydrate Diet.
and heres a post about muscles it explains why so many gym people want carbohydrates and btw you don't lose muscle at all while on atkins but you will gain muscle
people have ate low carb for over 99% of are entire existence if you hunt and gather in any place in the world out of the 3 macro nutrients you bring back carbohydrates will be the lowest
all these man made foods like refined grains aka bread and other junk food like cereal and crap these foods make us sick they are not natural at all
even man has cultivated fruit and GMO fruit to be more sweet so it is not as healthy as the fruit are ancestors ate not to mention fruit was very rare only avalible one or two months out of the year back then

Re: Defending your diet from outsiders.
I do the same as Neihu. When I'd be out at restaurants and my dear hubby would proudly declare "She can't have XXX, she's doing Atkins" I can't tell you how many sermons and potential sermon-giving looks I'd receive. It's as if everyone has their uninformed two cents to impart. It was a royal pain in the arse.Originally posted by neihu View PostI used to tell people that I was on Atkins and be fine with the challenges and my opportunity to defend my WOE. Now when I tell people I have cut out sugar and wheat everyone thinks I am very healthy!
So I do the "no sugar, no wheat/white flour" thing and true, everyone greets it with a smile and a little bit of envy, like "OMG, you're so strong!"
Sad but true.

i meant i was on day 7 of my introduction sorry.. and the audio book is diet revoulution 2002.Originally posted by JulieB View Postwell, to start with, induction is not 7 days it is 14...Is your Audio Book Dr. Atkins new Diet Revolution (2002 ed)? That is what we use on this site.
i was assuming that i was not alone in this. i like the no sugar and wheat idea. for now until i fully understand all that goes into this diets that way i can back up what i am doing a little more. it all makes sense when i listen to the book but i just didnt retain the hard facts yet, i have ordered the book as well maybe if i read it, it will stick a little better but there is so much to take in when your first learning this ne WOE. i just talked to my coworker we are still cool i just didnt bring up the diet so no bridges burned there. sfter some of your comments i was just thinking how i have never had a problem ordering two giant hamburgers with everything except onions lol but i find myself a little embearrased to order one without the bun humm! kind of weird.

Regarding saturated fat, here's something for you to read:

Ziggy, you really hit it on the nail there about how some people can respond. Those are the people that annoy me the most!!Originally posted by ziggy View Postyou could tell him the truth about healthy eating and he would say your full of ****

To the OP-I'm glad to hear you've ordered the book! Dr. Atkins wrote about a lot of "myths" about the Atkins way of eating, which is really helpful, especially when people give you the "Oh noes! You're eating unhealthy!" garbage. Even though they don't know, the most important part is that you know what you are doing. Keep up the great work!~Lisa
