    Re: Changing children's diets

Do the children like eggs? You might try making up some quiches on the weekend and popping them in the microwave for breakfast. There are several good recipes on this board - some use ham, cheese, spinach, etc. You just mix up the ingredients, fill muffin tins and bake.

      Re: Changing children's diets

I am so glad to have found this thread... I am now in the "preparation" for a LC woe, but I know two of my four children are very much on the slim side, and the other two are very much healthy weight, not overweight at all, sweets aren't a big offering in my house normally, nor is other "junk" (because if it's in the house, Mommy might want it too!!).... good to know that others are modifying meals slightly for the kiddos to get some whole grain carb servings as long as moderating the sweets intake.

Thanks... here's to informed choices future forward!

        Re: Changing children's diets

I don't know if changing their breakfast would help them concentrate better for school and curb their sweet cravings.

^^It definitely would help them concentrate better and curb their sweet cravings and last them until lunch. Think back to eating something high carb for breakfast. Within a couple of hours you were hungry again (because the carb filled meal was already out of your tummy), tired (because you were having a sugar crash), moody (from being hungry and tired)... same thing happens to them. I would give them eggs with some cheese and a veggie mixed in (I know mornings are probably crazy so just make a big thing of scrambled eggs and mix the cheese and veggie in it) and give them a small serving of fruit on the side. The fruit will satisfy their sweet tooth and the eggs will last them through the morning. Plus, most sevings of cereal are only 1/2- 3/4 c. and most people eat much more than that. I bet if you figure out how much they are actually eating, you will see that they are probably getting double, or maybe triple, the amount of sugar.

As far as me changing my son's diet, he's only 10 months old so he's really just starting. For breakfast, he eats rice cereal and a fruit or scrambled egg whites and a fruit, for lunch he has a vegetable, a fruit, and some cheese, and for dinner he has a meat and a vegetable. Other than his rice cereal, if he has pasta or bread, it is whole grain. While I don't think children should be deprived, I think they should be taught how to make healthy choices and moderation so that they aren't in the same boat we are in 20 years.

          Re: Changing children's diets

My daughter is 22 months old, and I am happy when she eats her "noodles". It can take up to 30 times, as before stated, offering a new food for them to accept it, but that doesn't seem to be the case with chocolate. Over Easter, my daughter was given chocolate for the first time. She took right to it... We don't have a lot of junk in the house, so when she asks for "cookies" she gets bran bites etc. The only "diet" I will ever try to impose on my kids will be one that is high in vegtables and whole foods, and low in processed foods esp. those containing sugars and high fructose corn syrup.

(High fructose corn syrup is the devil).

            Re: Changing children's diets

After reading 3 or 4 of Atkins books, plus several other "non-traditional" dietician's works, the "epidemic" isn't us, it is unrefined, garbage carbohydrates.

Speaking for myself, I have alsways been over weight, my 4 brothers have always been skinny. Currently, I'm working on the new me, while my brothers are working on "blossoming". And, the evil head of diabetes has popped up and made itself know to 3 out of the 4. Maybe if my mother had spent more time adding vegetables to the table, instead of fried dough, macaroni & cheese and homemade baked goods...

Well, let's leave it at the fact, that I have spent the vast majority of my life eating "healthy" the Department of Agriculture way. It is my responsibility as a father and grandfather to assist my loved ones in finding a better way of life than that of a fat diabetic.

While that doesn't say that we should be putting all of our children and grandchilden on an Induction WOE, it does implicate the need to teach our children (and grandchildren) that eating an Atkins Maintenance diet with other goodies as treats and not staples.

If we allow them to live off of McDonlad's french fries and Mountain Dew, it won't be long before they will be in need of the Induction plan!

We did rice cereal first because it is the most bland food out there and the most gentle on the stomach. After rice we tried Oatmeal (which he never did like much), then green beans, peas, squash, sweet potatoes, then fruit, then meat, then cheese, and then other grains. To this day, he still LOVES his rice cereal and green beans. I swear it's because those were his first foods.
