    What do you mean by "false positive"? They do tell you that you're spilling excess ketones.

    They're not telling you if you'll lose weight or if you're doing Atkins correctly.

    If you're assuming that spilling ketones is the end all and be all to "doing Atkins", then you are getting a "false positive".

    No. You lose weight on OWL and pre-maintenance., too.

      Good golly miss molly you have got to stop doing that. Talk about setting yourself up for failure & driving yourself right into an anxiety attack. I need to go take one of my anxiety pills after reading that post.

      Find your book & read it. Dr. Atkins talks about weighing yourself daily, realistic goals etc... And yes I've been reading all of your posts & all of the responses. I say read the book in favor of seeing you succeed vs driving yourself bonkers with scale numbers & goals on your calendar.

        Jax, it is possible to be in ketosis and not lose weight, and it is possible to lose weight without being in ketosis.

        J is absolutely right... ketosis is not the be all and end all to losing weight on Atkins... that's why Dr. A outlined a specific plan, with specific rules, and 4 phases. It's not just a matter of staying in ketosis to lose weight. It's about learning how many, and which kind of carbs you can eat to lose weight, and then maintain it.

        And, if your question is asking whether Induction is the only phase where you are in ketosis, the answer is no.

          Ok so now that atkins gal has answered there cannot be any false positives to the strips...

          So being in ketosis does not mean someone will lose weight (ie fat)? So by the defintion of ketosis: caused when the body metabolizes body fat for energy purposes instead of the usual glucose-from-carbohydrates, my thirst, headaches and positive sticks don't mean I am metabolizing my own fat?

          Good to know the way of life I am on isn't working and extra ketones are spilling just for fun. I guess it's just sarcastic me that doesn't have a benefit to the Atkins lifestyle.

            Move to OWL and try it for 2 weeks. All you are doing is adding back 5 net grams of those yummy induction veggies. Just remeber when you add the new veggies back you will be eating a few bites less of your other induction foods so you might have 30 bites of burger instead of 35 just stop eating when your hunger is satisfied even if you got food on your plate room in your tummy and carbsd in the budget. I would suggest you don't save your veggies for last so you do get them eatten.

            I do understand your issues with achieving your numbers. I was a happy go lucky atkins success story losing weight and just happy about any changes each time I checked. Then I met a very successful Atkinseer who told me I had to have goals in order to become a goalie. so I set them be XXX pounds by YY and I made a few of those dte weights but there was no join in getting them cause as soon as you get a date weight and you have another one on the next goal date you are right back at work the minute you know you got the first one. So I dumped my numbers and dates and was just a happy shrinking atkinseer yipping the I lost days and not looking at a date on a calander to make a miracle happen by.

            nobody has a cyrstal ball to predict scale number changes. how about posting on your calander I will be smaller or even I will be working my atkins XX days on your calander XXs from now.

              actually there can be false positives as the by product of alcohol metabolism will react with the reagents on the stix too.

              ketosis as defined by Dr Atkins just means we are uses fats for making fuel. One can gain weight being in ketosis by over eating their atkins. I don't suggest you do it but you could eat 5 pounds of butter a day be very very dark purple on the stix and gain weight. there is a famous example of somebody who contacted Dr Atkisn medical center before my time that was dark purple and not losing weight she was eating a stick of butter with cinnamon and sugarfree sweetner as her bed time snack. One of Dr Atkins staff talked about it on an internet Q and A interview.

                If there's one thing I've learned (and keep reminding myself) on this WOE is to not set goal dates. It just doesn't work out most of the time.

                The best you can do is to follow the plan to a T and let the weight loss happen as it does.

                Things you do and not do can hamper how quickly you lose weight. Not following the rules of Induction and OWL, cheating, eating foods that stall you or cause you to over eat, not drinking enough water or exercising, etc.

                Put the scale away. Don't set goal dates. Plan on doing this WOE for ever, not just for a short term weight loss.
                Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
                STAC Restart: 1/05/09
                306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

                Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
                Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

                Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
                Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
                Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!
                Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!

                  Ok so i drove all over trying to find the dang book since my dad has not responded to me. none. then it occurred to me that i can just check it out of the library and i have it on hold to pick up today.

                  I searched thru my calorie counter from last year where i kept up with everything and most days i barely ate 700-1200 calories. so this time i am purposely consuming more calories which i know is going to be good when i go up in rungs. so i am going to assume the weight loss is beginning to stall because of my calories also and i am not seeing the same percentages drop off as before. i did some calculations and compared last year to this year. i have kep my calendar with my weigh-ins to compare.

                  also think i am not eating enough fat because half my daily intake is just eggs and egglands best don't have as much fat as traditional eggs. i also get white and add them in. i also limited cheese and only eat 5-6 oz of meat protein a day.

                  still in ketosis so i assume my body is still fighting the fat and the pounds will come off, eventually but as i stated above maybe that is the problem when comparing to last year. higher cals, less fat.

                  going to owl 1 with additional veggies today still think i am under 30 net grams though. maybe i'll try the website most of you use. caloriecounter.com changed and i don't like it anymore.

                  hope to get some encouragement with the book over the next few days and decide from there is i just want to do low carb or atkins. i think it will turn out the same, because my mind is set to lose the weight and i have the rungs listed.

                  maybe i will decide to start over next week with induction after i read the book. who knows.

                  i've got before pics to post when I have time, can't wait to compare my progress.

                  but very busy next couple days ahead.

                    Again ... "before" is futile.

                    It can't ever be "before" ... this is "now".

                    I would recommend you live in the "now" ...

                    Or not. Remember, being in ketosis is not a guarantee that you will lose weight.

                      glad you are moving to OWL 30 isn't rung ones goal 5 more then your induction eating is the goal for rung one carb count so if you ate 12 for induction then you eat 17 for OWL rung 1
